Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

Kids need to be disciplined at times, but is it really this guy's position to go around slapping kids he doesn't know? I could see this being ok behavior for a political candidate political candidate in the Middle East, but I would think it would be a liability most other places.

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

He ended third in today's election, the video is from a previous campaing:
At some point during Bayrou's visit, an 11-year-old boy jostled up against him and tried to pick his pocket. Bayrou, heedless that the cameras were running, slapped the kid in the face.

Politicians of the left tried to make hay of the incident, using it to paint Bayrou as some kind of fogey, and themselves as hip to the country's new and "vibrant" youth culture. "Heck, I live in the suburbs, and no one's ever tried to pick my pockets," said Communist party presidential candidate Robert Hue. "Me neither," added Socialist prime minister Lionel Jospin, also running for president. The French public didn't see it that way. The more the Bayrou slap played on national television, the higher Bayrou's poll numbers rose--as he was seen as willing to support an assertion of authority against the country's lawless youths.
^^^ That's disgusting. And I've always liked the french.

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

Disgusting? It's rather logical in a country where they've had a number of riots in the past few years and where the problems with jobless youth and even the younger ones are getting rampant. People don't want half-baked pussies with sof solutions, they want tough action on those problems. And this was simply a symbol for that, but any politician better read into the public's reactions on this incident really carefully.

So far: S?gol?ne Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy are going to be the candidates in the final round. I'm going for Sarkozy.

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

It's disgusting to slap a kid fullstop!! They correct thing to do would have been to hold him for the police. A grown man who has to turn to violence on an 11year old?????? Yeah it's disgusting.

Yao, there is nothing logical about it.

he didn't backhand him full strength, he gave him a little slap on the face. toughen up man...

and like i said, 11 year old or not, you try and steal from someone...be prepared for the chance you are gonna get your ass kicked.

We have legal punishments for stealing!! It's not up to us to issue an arse kicking or slap around the head to someone else's children.

The joke is you all sound like the older generation " Oh kids these days!!!""

#848751Post 25 of 33

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

Legal punishment? Yea right, we all see what that has gotten us. The legal way should not even be necessary if parents gave their kids a decent set of moral values, and I still stand by the fact that nothing has a better impact than the occasional slap -not to be used lightly, but definitely something not to be afraid of when your kid crosses the line. Because pain, but even more the sudden fright such a slap brings, has a very direct influence: you don't want that to happen again so you don't fuck up next time.

I'm not for slapping per s?, but I'm sure as hell NOT going to argue with my kid. I'm not his/her friend, I'm the parent FFS and if I don't do my job right then they will fail miserably in life. They will have to accept that until they're old enoug to contest the wisdom of my decisions, period.

Oh, and thanks for the link Kinks, gonna check it out!

you also have the right to defend yourself when you are being robbed. like i said, a slap is the very least the kid shoulda got. do us a favor, if you ever have kids, smack 'em if they try and pull stuff like this...the world will be a better place.

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

Uh, are you looking around at all? I see parents ASKING their kids to be quiet while they're running around a shopping mall, or whining for candy or that kind of stuff. Do you think that's normal? I don't. I'm not going to ask anything to my child, the freedoms will come while they learn to accept their responsibilities, no sooner. You'll have to prove you're worth it, and earn them.

Because kids tend to see how far they can get, and by looking at the attitudes of today's kids it should be well clear to you that a 'best friend' approach isn't working at all. You know why? A best friend doesn't say 'no', doesn't send you to your room when you're bad and doesn't scold you when you've fucked up. They have friends their own age, at school. We should be parents, educators and guides and an educational slap when nothing else has worked is nothing wrong in my book. There's a difference between that and 'slapping someone around', so don't take my remarks out of context please.

I don't like the show, but look at Dr. Phil a few times and you see what happens when parents want to be their children's best friends. Assuming you're a woman, I'd never have you as the mother of my children. Nothing personal, I think you're a kind person, but just a fundamental difference of opinion ;)

i'm not saying you smack your kid everytime they disagree with you or do some minor thing wrong. but theft is not something you take lightly. if the kid is stealing at 11, what the hell you think he'll be doing by 18??

you don't think a kid trying to steal from a presidential candidate (or anyone else) didn't warrent a good slap in the face? ok...

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

OK, I think we have established two things! No1, I won't be breeding with any of you. particularly Yao, even though I've proved I'm good at it!!

No 2 We are probably not that fair apart in our philosophies. In one instance it's different interpretations of best friend, "A best friend doesn't say 'no', doesn't send you to your room when you're bad and doesn't scold you when you've fucked up." I think all these things can be done, and should be done by a best friend.

Maybe we see things differently, I totally agree that children shouldn't be allowed to run wild and in fact I very rarely see that happening. Though kids do have to learn appropriate behavior and sometimes they get it wrong the way we do. [Except we may be drunk at the time:D

Re the smacking , I have smacked my son, but to be perfectly honest it was nearly always my anger rather than for his own good.

The big difference here was that it was a stranger. If a stranger touched my child I'd kill them!! Actually I probably wouldn't but I'd want to.! Also he hit the child around the head which is a total no no.!! It's doesn't take much to do damage.

day for night, you don't think a little trip to the police station just might be more appropriate than letting them think violence is the answer??? If we react violently we are teaching them that's it's ok.

#849360Post 31 of 33

Re: French Presidential candidate smacks kid that harrasses him

what the hell are the police gonna do to a kid that young? NOTHING. they might scare him a bit but he knows there are no concequences. a good smack though, and he might just think twice before trying that again...

and no, i knew when my parents kicked my ass, it was cause i did something wrong. i was a little brat, and i'm glad they did it. kids have never been so outta control as in today's society cause of parents with the 'time-out' bullshit attitude.

A slap should indeed never be given when you're out of control, I actually think the less you do it, the more effect it will have -it must be something 'special'. And in such a case, I do think it can be for someone's own good because it will be the ultimate denominator of your social boundaries.

I've read that the philosophy these days is that kids should find their own ways and that society itself will teach them how far they can go, but the problem I see here is that whenever that happens, parents get angry and start justifying their kids. You get parents coming to school to beat up teachers when they punish a child, but hey...if they don't do it theirselves then who should?

Then there is the simple basic reaction to pain or fright: people hate that, kids especially. So usually a slap should hav the effect that a kid just doesn't want it to happen again. Pain (among others like hunger) is also mother nature's way of teaching animals that what they did was the wrong thing and they should find another way of doing it to succeed. It's a basic negative feeling that any person or animal tends to avoid by nature.

Now, that doesn't mean for me I want to use the negative way to raise a kid, not at all: I'd rather use the way of reward when my kid did something good, so it will be a lot more attractive to behave well. But my child will also be influenced by the outside world so I'll never have total control of it's development. Hence my idea that sometimes there are other options in an education to correct it besides the 'positive' way. I just hope not too often ;)
