well, I went to see Pappa & Jollins last night and I surely don't regret it. Jason opened in the main room at around 10:45 as they started letting people in the club. :RightOn: for your choice of music Jason, some really nice and moving progressive with carefully choosen peaks around the set, more than enough to get you interested to stick around the main room for the whole night. Of course, flawless mixing too. I thought Jason did an excellent job setting up for Pappa, who took over the decks around 1:50. As I remember recently hearing some mixed opinions about Pappa and as I had heard myself a couple of live sets from him in which he kind of let me down, his performance at Ikon was brilliant. Seemed like he played new material, I only recognized a few tracks. His set on Proton the other day motivated me to go see him last night actually, and he delivered I think an experience very close to that. Too bad he played only less than 3 hrs...

What I was wondering as I was looking at the ground floor of the main room was where were all the devoted fans of quality music? Certainly the place was not running at full capacity. Crobar, not my favourite place at the moment, is packed to the extreme everytime some of the big names shows up there. A chance to see the local talent of Jason followed by Anthony Pappa deserves as much attention as Sasha & Digweed at Crobar. The sound system of Ikon is great, better in my opinion than most of the other places in the city, and the place offers plenty of space and three floors to walk around - the pink room, hip hop room and the sky lounge plus spacious main floor. Great venue imo. It's just that probably it could have been a little more fun last nigh if there were more people there to enhance the atmosphere and participate in the experience.....

the same thing happens in dallas sometimes.. they had a few shows that come to mind.. a JVM & burridge tag team had very little support.. or a satoshi show. & a few others, all the while the meat factory next door or down the road is packed full of giblets..

oh well, when that happens though, more room for you & colder AC to enjoy w/ prompt service @ the bar..

i didn't go out last night but damn i wish i had. heard Pappa was on point and jason usually is too. but i really wanted to see Agent Orange and Dylan Drazen though. herd it was pretty damn good. ugh i miss my techno!

but as for not a lot of people being there, that was 'cause i htink there were other parties last night. mainly i know a lot of people went to Sullivan Room for the Matter/Form Propaganda party. heard that was great too.

Ikon is a hot place right now and Godskitchen is doing an excellent job with that space. Los of talent has been coming in as of late and next week should be fucking great! Mark Farina and Derrick Carter playing saturday. :)

well, all the other that didn't go are losers plan and simple. Ha. Times like this cmd just take it for what its worth you and the other people that were there had a blast. That's all that matters. I wish we had Pappa come through Orlando again he's only ben here once back in 2000, instead we get stuck with Seb Fontaine.

^^^ yeah, I had a great time, but it just didn't seem right that not many people showed up. Pappa could get the wrong idea that he is not appreciated in NY... as for room, there was plenty of room for everyone who was there, which felt really good, able to move around with no problem at all...
A chance to see the local talent of Jason followed by Anthony Pappa deserves as much attention as Sasha & Digweed at Crobar.
maybe. i don't think any DJs have the crowd pull that S&D do. after 10+ years touring, there really are no equals. additionally, i believe it's better to have a core crowd up for it rather then a club packed with meatheads and hookers. they only get in the way and bring down the vide.
Pappa could get the wrong idea that he is not appreciated in NY....
I hate to say it, this is true...NYers don't appreciate him. I've seen him a number of times here and rarely has the room been packed, but in NYers defense Pappa has been kinda hit or miss here. I guess, they're just tired of his misses. I can't say that I'm not also...

there are just many more great places to go, than to take a chance on a hit or miss. As for the crobar crowd, hell half of them on S&D night didn't even know who they were seeing.

Part of it is the fact that Ikon is huge. Between Ikon, Crobar, Avalon, Spirit, & smaller parties, I'm not sure there are enough people to go around. I'm almost positive that there aren't enough "musicheads" to fill that space. Another part of it is the stigma that space has. Exit was raided and shut down so many times a lot of people just don't want to deal with it...

That being said, I really hope Ikon pulls through and can survive. Godskitchen has done a great job bringing in talent every week and I hope more people start to support...

I was gonna go, but I have been to busy setting up my new place. Too bad I missed it. Maybe if Ruby called me I might have dropped everything and went.

What do you mean, I thought we we're seeing simon and garfunkel??

I'm really looking forward to going back to ikon at the end of the month. Max Graham and Grayarea, live!

I didn't want to say it either, but I guess rubyraks is right. Pappa just seems to be unable to bring the best out of NY clubbers. And it is true, this club being the former EXIT, brings alot of bad associations for some people. Even though Ikon seems a much better place. As far as I remember the reactions of the crowd to the tracks Pappa played, less than half of the people who were there knew who Pappa was. It was kind of sad to see something like that...

Re: Anthony Pappa & Jason Jollins @ IKON (nyc) last nigh

anthony pappa is terrific almost always! one problem, i think, is ikon has not been well publicized at all, plus the above-mentioned bad vibes people get there because it use to be club exit, which sucked.

i saw pappa at centro-fly before they closed. the place was jumping & very sold out! nobdy knows ikon is even open, & if they do, they don't want to go because it was exit...

Re: Anthony Pappa & Jason Jollins @ IKON (nyc) last nigh

I was at the Sullivan party, and now generally prefer going to smaller underground parties - music there is fresh vibe, sans the see and be seen crowd (Crobar/Spirit). In NY, there are always Sat nite choices 8)

Agreed but I do agree with everyone else. He is hit or miss. Pappa can but on the best dj set you ever heard or he can play out suck. It is just a matter of how pappa wants to play that night. To bad though b/c the man is so talented and definetly could help make dance music even better than it is.
