Check out http://www.berlitz.us/

Erzina is learning Dutch with another system which is pretty good: Assimil. Basicly it's focussed on learning to speak a language rather than learning all the gramar for writing. You can order your English-Chinese course here: http://www.idiomas.be/producten/assimil/vanuit-het-engels/chinese-with-ease-1/ and http://www.idiomas.be/producten/assimil/vanuit-het-engels/chinese-with-ease-2/

Re: Learning Chinese

i would look at continuing ed classes in colleges around you. my mom is learning korean at a korean church - maybe you can find something like that in the community. i have a few friends that study chinese up here, they all say its pretty fucking hard, then they go abroad and decide not to come back.

Of any language on the planet right now, Chinese is probably the most beneficial, especially being an attorney.

Russian? lol. wtf do the russians have that's worth learning their language?

Knowing Toasty, i'd imagine he's just picking up the language just because, "why not?"

Re: Learning Chinese

ni hao bai guai, (hello white devils) i took mandarin for four years in highschool and having parents that know how to speak it helps. i think you should take classes at your local jounior college and see if you stick with it for a year or 2. But if you study for at least 3 or 4 years or spend some time in china or spend time with some slopes you can pick it up. 2 words you will learn to hate...stroke order.

#824351Post 12 of 46

Re: Learning Chinese

stroke order?

umm..... up, down, up, down, up, down (faster and faster, use lube)

#824406Post 14 of 46

Re: Learning Chinese

Yes. Stroke order sucks ass. Write a paragraph in Chinese and your hand will hurt like you wrote a book in English.

Hit the nail on the head. I think it will be a good challenge. I've heard it's harder than hell, so if I can pick up Mandarin Chinese, normal, everyday challenges ought to be gravy...

The way the world is become more and more of a global economy, I do think that 20 years from now, I might look back and thank myself for learning it now, but I am really just interested in it for shits and grins.

Re: Learning Chinese

I'm itching to learn a language too. I've got two choices - Spanish or Thai.

Spanish would definately be the easier of the two, plus my mum and some good friends of mine speak it. Thai would have to be one of the hardest languages in the world, but I just feel like learning it for shits and giggles.

If anyone can start me off on some reading for what I'm getting myself in to for learning Thai, speak now or forever hold your peace.

When i say we're going to :hollow:take french:hollow: i really mean we're going to hit up one of those stl community evening things that are over and done with in a jiffy. We're not looking to be fluent, or even ask where the bathroom is, just want to be able to read wine labels and not sound like americans. :p

Re: Learning Chinese

My pronunciation of other languages is outstanding, was pretty much my major, except for those damn french. And it's not being a snob, if you lived in the midwest, trust me, you'd do everything possible not to sound like some of these fucking dipshits.

in any asian language the order inwhich you write characters is very important, here are some very simple words so that you can see what you might be getting into
