Detroit's Electronic Music Festival 2007 to showcase rare performances by legendary Detroit artists Moodymann, Model 500, and Jeff Mills

Movement 07, Detroit's Electronic Music Festival will feature performances by legendary Detroit artists Moodymann live featuring Pitch Black City; Model 500 featuring the godfather of Detroit Techno Juan Atkins; and Jeff Mills, the longtime hard hitting "wizard" of Detroit Techno. The festival will take place Memorial Day weekend May 26-28 at its home in Downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza.

Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) is a Detroit techno/house artist known for his innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves taken from the City's historically influential jazz, soul, funk and disco scene. Rarely appearing live, his headlining performance at the festival is the first show in support of his upcoming studio album and will include a full stage show with a band.

Juan Atkins, who is widely regarded as the godfather of Techno, began in the 1980s recording what stands as perhaps the most influential body of work within the genre. Model 500 will headline the main stage on Sunday at the festival, highlighting the continuing influence of his music on a global scale.

Jeff Mills is a planetary superstar of techno, an unwearied hero of mega-events and an ace of the three-deck mix; his musical touch has been a force on this city's dance scene for over 20 years. Jeff returns to Detroit to headline the festival with a main stage closing performance on Monday night.

Other 2007 special performances include German producers Booka Shade, who have earned a reputation as one of the world's most exciting live electronic music acts. Their performance at the 2007 festival will mark Booka Shade's first appearance in Detroit. Also performing live will be Octave One, featuring Detroit natives, brothers Lenny and Lawrence Burden, who have released groundbreaking underground dance anthems on their Detroit-based record label, 430 West Records.

In addition to Moodymann featuring Pitch Black City, Model 500, Jeff Mills, Booka Shade, and Octave One, the 2007 festival will feature the following artists (more artists to be announced):

I can get to miami, i choose not to. Been there done that.

it's > because it costs a fraction of what miami costs, the lineup (imo) is wiiicked- right up my alley. it does have some of the same artists, but the ones coming to detroit that don't appear in miami, i mean...not sure your musical background, but rhythm and sound 6 hour live pa? losoul? digitaline, matthew jonson? freaking monolake live!! Jeff Mills closing out the festival, stacey pullen...etc etc. the artists bring it in detroit- ie- they're not faced like they are in miami- A game, something to prove in techno's birthplace, it's just a whole different animal.

miami is cool because it's miami. big titties, beach, nice weather, etc. setting is awesome, getting smashed with all the djs, can't knock that.

just an observance, i've done both before - detroit >

Not to even mention Diggler, Boratto, Schneider, and Ozer. With the exception of Schneider in that list, I haven't seen any of those names pop up in any Miami lists.

Re: DEMF > wmc

That DEMF lineup is ridiculous!! Plus its only the initial lineup, I'm sure there'll be a few other tasty additions as the weeks pass. Dollar per dollar, DEMF beats WMC imo.

#812078Post 12 of 44

Re: DEMF > wmc

WMC has got a more broad range of dj/producers, you can go and hear almost all your favorite dj's.

And about 5-7 years ago you could have went to WMC and seen some of the detriot dj's.

Re: DEMF > wmc

dude whatttt, i don't see carl craig on there...lame....but ya, that's a heavy lineup - would love to go, but being around angry people who just got layed off from the big auto giants doesn't strike me as fun. :)

enjoy demf jenks !

Re: DEMF > wmc

There's nobody left in Detroit, so no need to worry. Great place for me to party. Especially that it's half hour away, with those kinda lineups. Im sure i'll be up for it. Just gotta find those KEY afterhour parties.

Re: DEMF > wmc

The DEMF, having grown up in the burbs of detroit (Eminem is from 8 mile, I'm from 15 (whole different world mind you)), is the shit. Besides a redwings or lions game, its one of the only times people flock to the city...and all types of people...kids from the burbs, the nearby colleges, canada...and even the old ladies who never left D-town who come to see what all the "boom boom racket" is. The fact that detroit is largely a shithole is what makes the DEMF so special...its one of the few times where you can imagine what a great and vibrant city detroit used to be, but also what is might eventually become. The setting is absolutely sick, right in downtown, surrounded by sky scrapers on 3 sides, the river to the other side, ambasdor bridge glowing in the distance...its just totally sweet. And Stacy Pullen always puts out a sick set. Worth the price of admission (totally free) every time.

Re: DEMF > wmc

Miami is just fucking ridiculous. WMC is fun but they fucking ass rape at the hotels, door of the club, bar, and if your not careful jibbs might ass rape you too. I think I'm with Jenks on this one as well. There's too many DJ's @ DEMF that this might be the last time any of us could ever get the chance to see play/preform live. I can't believe I'm about to say this but I think I have seen Sasha and Digweed so many times that after the show I'm not standing there shaking my head saying WTF just happened? I know times are changing and maybe it's just me getting a little older but WMC and fighting a million spring breakers who know jack shit about the music along with 50-75 entry fees and bar tabs in the 4-500 range just isn't fun to me anymore. Yes I know not all of the parties at WMC are like that but for the most part they are and I don't see it changing anytime soon if ever.

Re: DEMF > wmc

Just looking at the schedule...when it says live performance vs. DJ performance...does that mean there will be a band or something like that?
Just looking at the schedule...when it says live performance vs. DJ performance...does that mean there will be a band or something like that?
Sometimes that can be the case but more times than not it's the DJ/producer up there making stuff happen with laptops, synths, decks, samplers, etc., etc., etc., creating music live.

BLASPHEMY!!

i think it partly has to do with mindset. with an attitude like that no wonder you dont have a good time. that and the djs do need to pull through when it comes to events like this. there were many people shaking their heads in disbelief after s&d new years set, so they are still very capable of doing that. but id imagine if they turned out a mediocre set, i probably would have been disappointed too after all the money i spent.

with miami, you really need to plan ahead. get the hotels/tickets first. then before the show just pre drink. or just dont drink at all. good times will be had almost guaranteed.

Re: DEMF > wmc

the sick thing is that's only 55% of the lineup. the rest will be coming in a couple weeks. if any of you come to detroit for the demf, hit me up.. i've just started working for paxahau and will be working at the festival. =)

^ That is cool. Congrats. I will be there as always. Only way I will miss out is unless some crazy happens and can't make it up there. I am not sure if I will be there the whole this yr though. Maybe will see how the money situation works out.

they charged last year too. it's a bargain and a half imo. nowhere else will you find this much talent for this price all in one place. 'ardcore imo.

Re: DEMF > wmc

i am going, in fact i leave tomorrow morning there lots of good party's both at the festival & after hours too. Saterday night has Claude von Stroke playing with Audion for afters and sunday the is the M_nus party. The ticket for the festival was $41 for a 3 day pass. i love Miami & the WMC but lets see Miami compare to that. Hell even the CVS & Audion party is only 10 bucks for the ticket.

detroit here i come

Re: DEMF > wmc

South Beach may be all pretty and stuff, but Detroit's got the TUNES, as far as I'm concerned. And it's way the hell cheaper.

I'm hoping to still make it up for some part of this.
