what do you think about DJs that show up, put on a already-mixed CD/mp3 and pretend to mix all night long, when all along he's been putting on a show? i think of it as a scam.

here's an email i recently got from a friend in SF:

hey fellas and fellette,

just got back from this place called "xxxxxxxx lounge". it was a friend's birthday party and she wanted to grab drinks there; the place is just like Halo, except the dj was playing some radio hip hop.

I was listening to him thinking, "wow, he's got some really smooth mixes" so I kinda meandered over and looked at the setup: 2 decks and a mixer. then, I noticed it: he had a laptop. When he went on break, i took a look, and man, my faith in the dj world has been shaken.

winamp.

playing a single track: "friday night mix"

i watched him the rest of the night. he had the same 2 records on the whole time, pretending to mix and beatmatch, moving the pitch control, queuing the records, etc. but the whole time his laptop was playing "friday night mix". he had the earphones on and everything, gyrating to the beats, playing with the treble and bass controls, moving the crossfader back and forth ...

i was half-tempted to write on a napkin, "you are a fucking poser" and hand it to him as I left, but I was kinda drunk (and still am, I just got home) so I didn't.
come on. winamp? pretending to play records?

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

there was a story including pictures and cell phone video that accused gabriel and dresden of this about 1-2 years ago. someone got above the booth, and took pitures of them changing records, and booth dancing, and then the person spotted the laptop and took video of them "not DJ'ing", the mixer wasnt touched all night according to the spotters there.

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

i remember reading somewhere a few years ago about a BT dj gig. He was playing the mix off his laptop and it crashed and the guy just restarted it and played the whole mix again from the beginning.

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

To be perfectly honest if they get away with that shit than the crowd deserves it... I've seen this stuff in loads of shit clubs, as I always make a mental mark to check out the DJ even if I have never heard of him/her,and when I do see that I tell the guy he's a fucking fake and never come back to that place. Most people don't even fucking give a shit...if they are not into their music...once I told a girl that the guy was not mixing and that he was actually playing of iTunes and she just looked at me as though I was weird for noticing...so I thought fuck it and just left...I later spoke to the guy and he was like "look I 'DJ' here 4 times a week and get paid 50? a night, some times I do mix but mostly I don't as the songs I like to play don't get the response from the crowd, so fuck 'em...look at them are all happy this way" (it was something like that anyway) so I didn't know what to say...I mean first I thought why doesn't he find somewhere where the music he plays will be appreciated but then its none of my business...I just don't go there anymore....

yep they have been known to do that sort of thing. ive said this many times before, DNA Lounge in San Fran live streams/video of their sets, Dresden was on one night and he did this. he was only on for an hour, but he kept the same CD in the cdj the whole night... i sat here and was like what the fuck? to this day i have no respect for that guy as a DJ

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

Hmm... to be fair, if a DJ has the same two records on the decks all night and they have a laptop they could be using Serato or Final Scatch. And I know a few talented DJ's who throw on a prerecorded mix when they need to leave the booth to piss, talk with the owner, or whatever.

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

maybe the laptop was for recording.

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

I wonder how you can keep yourself busy for a few hours pretending to spin. I'd die from boredom.

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

I had this same scenario last night actually...........

Went out with my football team for one of our regular beer sessions, so I knew we'd end up in some commercial club but I dont mind as we always have a great laugh.

Anyway, in a club and I just knew the dj was playing a pre-recorded mix. The mixing between each track was just TOO perfect. HOWEVER, he played some great older classic tunes that when you're drunk and with your mates, you don't mind hearing/dancing. Plus there were some lovely ladies out there!

Tracks I heard:

Agnelli & Nelson-El Nino Energy 52-Cafe del Mar Insomnia Bizarre inc-Playing With Knives

Like I said, whern you're drunk and with the lads sometimes you don't want to hear the most upfront material.

No joke. Someone accused Danny Howells of playing prerecorded mixes on some messageboard. Hilariously enough Danny Howells apparently reads that board and that was basically his response.

Personally, I have never seen a DJ mime a set. There were a couple of times that I thought a DJ was faking it because I felt like his actions on the mixer weren't in sync with the sound coming out of the speakers, but looking back it was because I was either fucked up or didn't really know as much about DJ'ing as I thought I did.

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

I think this is all kinda cool and inspirational. I'm only collecting vinyl and putting time into mixing now so that I can make it big, pop in a CD, and surf for porn while I make some $$$. Can't wait!!!

:p

Re: milli vanilli DJs...

I think that DJ AM Probably does this. But he scratches on a cd-j to make it "Sound Different" LOL.

I've actually heard that Eric Prydz does this.
