Starbucks to up price of morning fix

Starbucks plans to raise prices for the first time in four years, a newspaper report confirmed Thursday, hoping that loyal customers already willing to pay more than $3 for a tall latte will stick around.

"Prior to the end of the calendar year, Starbucks will be taking a modest price increase," Chairman Howard Schultz told the Wall Street Journal, citing escalating dairy prices, as well as rising rent and health insurance costs.

CNN/Money reported in July that price hikes were on the horizon for Starbucks in its North American stores.

Schultz would not say how much prices would rise this time around. The gourmet coffee retailer last raised prices by 7 cents on average, or 2 to 3 percent, in August 2000, the newspaper reported.

The newspaper quoted customers as saying the proposed hike is "ludicrous."

And two-thirds of regular coffee-house customers said gourmet take-out coffee is too expensive, according to a market survey conducted early in the year by research firm Mintel International Group.

But in a note to clients earlier in the summer, WR Hambrecht analyst Kristine Koerber had said, "We believe the price increases will be met with little resistance by the consumer because the underlying demand for the products has been so strong."

Current pricing pressures could force the coffee chain to raise prices by as much as 4 to 5 percent, or about a dime to the average $2-$2.50 drink, according to the report.

Speculation that a price increase began in earnest when Starbucks (SBUX) saw same-store sales last Wednesday dip for the first time in 10 months on the slowest same-store growth in 14 months, sparking a sharp sell-off.

Officials at Starbucks Seattle headquarters were not immediately available. yeah, they never are, are they???

Re: Starbucks to up price of morning fix

Come on that is just uncalled for. How much can it possibly cost to make 2 ounces of coffee and then add 6 ounces of milk. Even taking labor and overhead into account you have to making a killing (especially when you're selling blueberry muffins for $106.87) I'm going to have to start taking out loans to insure a steady flow of caffeine in my diet. Oh well, I suppose if they can keep customers with higher prices there is no reason not to do it. Yet, they are still satanic bastards, and all of the world knows this.

Re: Starbucks to up price of morning fix

coffee and cigarettes. inelastic demand due to consumer addiction. they can raise their prices as much as they want and we'll keep buying just as much. if they were really evil, they'd increase the price even more 10%. . . .i know i would. anyway, it's sick how much we spend on coffee in this country. isn't anyone thinking of the starving kids in africa? :(

Fucking addicts. :P

#251655Post 12 of 23

Boooooo.

Luckily I only buy starbucks once in a blue moon. I don't drink coffee in the morning and only have a craving for it once in a while.

In fact, maybe this will be a good thing and people will stop doing business with these people.

I am most definitely addicted to coffee. On the days I dont work I dont drink it and I get horrible headaches, moodiness, i could go on and on...most abused drug in America ;)

Out here in hollywood, I really don't have any option other than starbucks when I want a coffee out on the go. Back home in buffalo, there were so many good places to get coffee, that I never went to starbucks. It was all about supporting good coffee houses that care more about their patrons rather than their profits.

i hate starbucks and coffee.

Re: Starbucks to up price of morning fix

The sad thing is only 10% of the price of a cup of coffee actually goes to the country that produced it.

Re: Starbucks to up price of morning fix

Starbucks was already hugely expensive anyway. The food is even worse, best part of 4 quid for a distinctly average sandwich?!

1 mocha latte please...here's my wallet

#254695Post 22 of 23

I got an excellent Krups coffee machine for about ?65 and now have an unlimited mocha lifeline. It makes tremendous espresso and froths up milk real nice.

I think 'bucks coffee is v much overrated and way too expensive. At least they pay marginal lip service to free trade.

Their capuccino's have a semipermeable white mousse at the top - the sort of stuff they use at Amnesia foam parties to drown the Trancers, or pump into cavity walls. You put in some sugar ... it rejects it - then after finally beating the hell out of it with all manner of things do the granules finally sink.

Give me real Italian coffee any day of the week.

that will rarely affect me.. i get the bucks to brew at my house myself.
