Best Firewall: Norton? ZoneAlarm?

OK so I have heard about Norton INternet Security and ZoneAlarm. Used both, Norton seems nicer, more easy to configure perhaps, plus it automatically configures known programs and explains you why such as Microsoft host or something, it knows what it is and so automatically gives it accept. ZoneAlarm also recommends what to do sometimes, and it is also pretty easy, though perhaps norton's interface is 'cleaner'.

but i care more for protection. so i wanna know which is best in terms of shielding your computers. zonealarm seems to provide several layers of protection, such as hacker spoofing, stealth mode, an 'emergency mode' in case a hacker did manage to get in... in general, i've always heard from reviews that zonealarm is top.

any suggestions? ive also heard that sygate is a very good one? which do you think is best?

I used to use Norton, but it's a resource hog. I switched to Zone Alarm. I'm much happier now. 8)

zone alarm doesnt take up much memory then?

I'm using the free version of ZoneAlarm right now, it takes about 7mb in memory.

Used to have Sygate here, it was a nice firewall. Never tried the Symantec option though, I'm not too fond of them right now...

If you're looking for firewall options, check this site http://forum.misec.net/board/Firewalls there are links to a lot of good firewalls.

Where's McAfee? I've been using that for over a year and like it much more than Norton's.

I'm using kerio on my XP machine with no hassles, i pretty much prefer it to ZoneAlarm. Never used sygate

I use Sygate Personal Firewall and I am absolutely in love with it. It's light and like Kerio, takes snapshots of how programs execute. So if a virus / trojan takes over your system and involuntarily executes another program, the firewall will tell you about it.

Its also VERY VERY light on memory and appears to use almost no resources (atleast I cant tell but then again I have a powerful box  )

Take the above features from Sygate, add an award winning product to the package and you have KERIO....Kerio is probably the best firewall out there but the last time I used it, it didnt have a free version....

I have used Zone alarm which is the worst firewall on the planet. After using it for about a month (no matter which version I used, free of paid) the firewall would just automatically disable ALL internet traffic and disappear from the system tray. I would have to uninstall and re-install the shit over and over to make it work and finally gave up on it.

My BIGGEST complain with Norton (like their anti-virus) is they are bad memory managers (and their anti-virus misses viruses that other online software scans catch but thats another story altogether). I never liked how norton's firewall worked and with the problems that members had on here of late made me dislike it even more....

go with the free version of Sygate or buy Kerio if you're even more paranoid about security.....

It's using 4.5MB on my machine and has been working flawlessly for 5 months now.
