In what could be seen as both marketing stunt and ploy for donations, popular Swedish BitTorrent site The Pirate Bay has announced intentions to raise money to purchase Sealand, a claimed "sovereign Principality" founded in international waters, six miles off the eastern shores of Britain.

The idea is to establish The Pirate Bay in a location where international copyright laws do not apply. The service, easily the most popular site hosting torrent files for downloading illicit content such as movies and television shows, has faced increasing pressure since being raided and forced to relocate from Sweden last May.

Although The Pirate Bay, like other torrent sites, hosts no copyrighted material itself, it plays a central role in facilitating the searching for and downloading of such content. Its operators have openly mocked and taunted those who threaten it with legal action.

If it does not raise enough money to buy Sealand, which is not much more than an offshore oil platform, the group says it will look into purchasing a small island and declaring it an independent nation.

"To make sure the owners [of Sealand] will be kopimistic and that the country won?t be governed by people that do not care about it?s future, we have come up with a plan. With the help of all the kopimists on Internets, we want to buy Sealand. Donate money and you will become a citizien," The Pirate Bay wrote on a Web site setup for the effort.

"It should be a great place for everybody. With high-speed Internets access, no copyright laws and vip accounts to The Pirate Bay." Thus far, the group has raised over $17,000.

In what way? I hope you're not making an uneducated stab at connecting Snow Crash to a bit torrent hosting platform.

Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

Ah those crazy Swede's...I honestly admire their dedication to the cause. An average person would have stopped doing what they are doing like 4 years ago but not these guys they are fighting the law and we will see who will win.

Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

good advertising for those guys, they think pirate bay is popular and notorius now? wait till after the law suit and they get away scot free...

I swell with pride every time im wearing my pirate bay hoodie - these guys are my heros

why? not because of the law breaking, but because they deserve us to respect their project - alot of brilliant minds have worked on that site, and its been an interesting ride.

Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

Thought this was hilarious, here's a big FUCK YOU.

 • A server was down and I restarted it, Neij tells expressen.se. He is one of the four founders of The Pirate Bay that stand accused of “complicity to making copyrighted material accessible” (yes, that’s the charge). That didn’t stop him from taking care of a server mishap in the middle of the trial’s closing argument. Thepiratebay.org was down during the best part of Monday, which had a good deal of file-sharing folks worried that the website might be down for good this time. Thankfully for them, he had his trusty laptop at hand and could restart the server remotely, so that eager fileswappers could get back inside. -We have Internet access [in the court room] so it was no problem, Neij told Expressen today (Tuesday); -Besides, I’m keeping up with the coverage of the trial. The farcical battle between a sadly incompetent prosecution vs. knowledgeable and sometimes loud-mouthed defendants is almost at an end, and the fact that Neij manages thepiratebay.org’s servers remotely during the trial is just one of several examples that point out the huge gap in technical know-how that the sides have exhibited. Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

Hardly seems worth all this time and effort to close down one site when there is so many others providing the same aswell.

#1175037Post 29 of 31

Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

Because it's a symbol, and this sets a precedent by which other sites can be (easily) taken down? You can be sure if they manage to shut down Pirate Bay, none of the smaller sites will escape. And the lawyer letters they love sending out will have a lot more weight to them.

Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

Yeah i suppose. Dont know about easily though, its been going on for a while now.

#1175039Post 31 of 31

Re: Pirates Ahoy!!!

I think it's like paving the way ... once this goes down, other lawyers can cite this as a case to supplement their prosecution of other sites, etc etc ...
