Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

After messing with Technics turntables for a couple of years, I'm thinking about trying out some CDJs. A lot of online reviews seem geared towards "scratching" when as a house DJ, I'm not too concerned with that aspect. Any particular differences between the Dual-CD players and the single CD-players>

Looking at the Pioneer CDJ-200 right now (about $400/deck), just to give an idea of the price range I'm looking for.

Anyonw know of good decks or places to read some good reviews? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

I have two cdj 200 players and love them. Actually like them better than the 1000. I don't need the big jog wheel and vinyl action (that's what i have records for) so to me, it was an easy choice, and i'm very pleased. $400 tho? do some price searching. I got mine less than that.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

yeah I'm thinkin about getting some Numark CDN22 MK4's to start off with but Im not 100% sure. I use traktor but im sick and tired of it, I wanna DJ properly. I already have a mixer. Can someone give their thoughts on those numarks? I read some reviews alot of ppl said they were really good for entry level djs like myself but they also said there were some flaws l ike pitch suddenly going to zero and some of the buttons not firing properly? can anyone confirm?

cheers

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

the problem with Numarks is....they're Numarks.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

dude i totally suggest cdj 200's. I've spun on 1000's and 800's and I still like my 200's better. they already play MP3's if you want them too plus they have some cool effects that you can manipulate using the jog wheel, which I love. The looping on them is pretty awesome too. not to mention they cost ahell of as lot less.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

Really? 200s over 1000s and 800s? I understand the price difference and everything, but still...

Pronsen, what have you heard about the numarks? I've never really used CD-Js before, so I'm basically going on word-of-mouth...

#782295Post 8 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

I will still push the 800s over the 200s, I just can't lose the vinyl type of control that the 200s sacrifice. CDJ mode is such a foreign feeling to me, almost archaic IMO. So if you are the type that wants full vinyl emulation when using CDs, the 800s cannot be beat. MK1s or MK2s for that matter...

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

the 1000's are always superior players. but as you suggested you wanted something 'entry-level' go with the 200's. i, like others here, own these too and love them to death. mixing on them is precise and smooth. no chasing shit like when you use the 800's. not to mention you can own three of the 200's for the price of one 1000. ;)

don't ever by numark dex.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

I once read a little piece from a dj who has played all over the world.

He said something to the effect that there is a reason why you'll never see Numark equiptment in the big clubs of the world. They simply can't hold up to the Pioneer equiptment. If your having problems with the price, you can always get refurbished. They will usually take you a 3-400 off the 1000 and maybe 100 off the 200 model.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

Jib, what do you mean chasing shit with the 800s?

#782449Post 12 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

bro the last couple pairs of 800's i used at least one of them each time had something wrong with the jog wheel. so when i was making adjustments the track would do the opposite of what i wanted it to. therefore i'd be chasing it with the pitch control constantly. i've never had this problem with the cdj 100, 200, or 1000's.

#782451Post 13 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

strange... I have never experienced that with mine

#782456Post 14 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

could be that the ones i have used were not taken care of as well. i should say i used a brand new pair of 800's recently too that worked fine. maybe those are just succeptable to damage easier than others. :NotMe:

bastard owners smacking their CDJs!

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

hambino and i have a mutual friend who bought a pair of 800's a couple years back. the guy has two kids so his priorities weren't taking care of his shit. i'm told one of the cdj's rode around upside down in the back of his caravan for some unknown amount of time. it's amazing how stupid people can be.

#782465Post 17 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

absolute blasphemy. this is why I will never have kids or go near them.

#782580Post 18 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

Having children is NO REASON to not take care of your equiptment. One of my good friends has been a dj long before he had kids, he has three and has never let his family get ahold of his dj equiptment. All his stuff is still like brand new.

There is a reason they make those cd cases that you can buy for 80-90$, when you spend 1K on a cd player, you need to spend the extra 80$ for the case to go with it.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

i too have the 200's and love them....i have had no problems with them...like it was said before...the little effects it comes with are great (except zip - sucks ass)...they could do without that feature and add a different effect, like filter...actually filter would be nice...obviously the 1000's are nice to look at, but for the price differnence for scratching isn't worth it to me....i have always thought about upgrading to 800's just for the vinyl platter

how about autopan then...

#784076Post 22 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

why would you use the auto pan function. It doesn't really do much for making your set more interesting. I really think Pioneer could have went without that and made some longer delays.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

recently saw this one's ... same size. 1/3 of the price.

Reloop RMP-1 - 349,00? http://www.elevator.de/product_info.php/info/p2007-Reloop-RMP-1-black.html

Reloop RMP-2 - 489,00? http://www.elevator.de/product_info.php/info/p2008-Reloop-RMP-2-black.html

Reloop is a brand from my hometown, not the best quality but the recent stuff is getting better and better .... for that price...

New compact DJM-400 2ch Mixer
Pioneer Launches the Compact DJM-400 2ch Mixer - with In-Loop Sampler and Digital Beat Effects - that's Big on Performance Stoke Poges, January 19th 2006 : Pioneer GB Limited today unveils its new compact 2ch mixer; the DJM-400 . It offers a host of beat effects and an in-loop sampler that offers a new level of flair for creative remixing. Built around the same digital processing technology and high quality components used in Pioneer's DJM-1000, the new unit is a reliable and robust performer with exceptional audio quality. ?Pioneer is a recognised innovator in professional DJ products and we've created a high-quality compact 2 channel mixer that's tailored to the demands of DJs mixing in bars and smaller clubs and those mobile artists who demand a reliable, robust and high-quality mixer. The digital beat effects and in-loop sampler combined with the digital circuitry ensure that this compact mixer lacks for nothing in the creativity it provides and the quality of the sound, ' comments Martin Dockree, Sales Manager ? Pioneer Pro DJ Although the smallest mixer in Pioneer's range, the DJM-400 packs a wide variety of effects for creative mixing. The effects, that automatically detect the BPM of the music and sync to the beats include: Delay, Echo, Filter, Flanger, Phaser, Robot and Roll, all of which are processed at 24bits for the highest quality sound. In addition, by using the newly-adopted Beat Select Button, the DJM-400 automatically sets the effect time linked to the BPM for more intuitive play and responsive remixing. The intelligent 96kHz/24bit sampler automatically detects the tempo of a track during playback, sampling it for four beats, then loops the sample. As the sampled audio is in sync with the beat of the track being played (no matter the tempo) the DJ is given more time to be creative. Samples are automatically beat matched and up to five samples can be stored in memory. Each of the DJM-400 's channels has a 3-band Kill EQ which ranges from +9dB to -∞(infinity) for total control of the sound. The DJM-400 has been designed with as a perfect partner for the MP3 compatible CDJ-200 both in terms of style and function. When combined, these units create a small, portable yet powerful and robust DJ setup that offers exceptional versatility and performance. The DJM-400 has a wide range of features. Some of the additional highlights include:
[]MIC/AUX switch: to select from either two MIC connections or one stereo LINE connection []Fader Start: connect a Pioneer CDJ player with a control cable and playback can be started by simply sliding the cross fader or channel fader []Cross fader curve adjust: adapts to the DJs mixing style []Talk over: automatically attenuates the volume by -20db so an MC can talk over the track
Peak Level Meter: Allows you to check the peak level of the input audio for each channel or the master
The DJM-400 will be available from April '06 and will retail at approximately ?339

If you will kindly notice, the DJM-400 as opposed to the 800 has full infinite kills on each of the eq knobs.
never used the zip function as well. Isn't that thing just a heavy flanger to make it sound like an airplane?
Yes, and it sounds fucking horrible. Unless you're spinning epic trance, there is no place for the freaking flanger. So many people over use effects just because they're there. The only thing i use is the filter on the Allen and Heath, which is really conducive to the kind of music i play.

#787929Post 36 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

yeah that filter in the A&H is sweet. Never got to use it much, as I've only spun on an A&H board once.

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

So I guess the consensus here is for CD noobs like myself, Pioneer 200s good, Numarks bad... Vestax has an entry CD product, Stanton has a bunch of them, and I think Denon has a couple, anyone know anything about these?

And whoever put up the posts on electronicscity.com, thanks, I might look into that package deal...

#789248Post 38 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

Hmm, I'm also a noob looking to get in to it, and now I'm gonna seriously consider the 200s instead of saving all my hard earned cash on something I've never had a serious go of before.

Just one question though, I've never really been able to work out the difference between the CDJ mode and the Vinyl mode.

Vinyl mode is pretty easy to work out - the platter will act exactly the same as a record spinning. Push down and it holds the track there, move it forwards and back to cue it up.

What's the process of handling the track while in CDJ mode? What does pushing down do? What does moving the dial forwards and backwards do?

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

DO NOT buy anything other than pioneer decks. everything else is just A WASTE of money. you get what u pay for with pioneers. the 200's are AWESOME for entry level/space saving/beginners

but for the most party pioneer should stick to making CD players, cuz their mixers are SHITE

#789512Post 40 of 61

Re: Any entry-level CDJ sugg.s?

i'd say either the 200's or the Denon S1000 which is a really nice little cd player. It has both the jog wheel and pitch bend buttons which are really nice. It also plays MP3 discs too. I've played on the S1000 many times and really dig them.
