I just needed to vent, bear with me. So I make this demo tonight right and I get really nervous when I record myself, but as I was playing I was thinking "this bitch is gonna be bad ass", WRONG WRONG...we're talking about suga shane here! Mind you I've been spinning for almost 6yrs now! Listening to this demo made me feel like I can't mix for shit! I'm so mad! It just takes so much energy for me to record I'm not sure if I'm gonna try it again for a while. The track selection was good and the build of the set was good, but it needed some 'during the mix' tweeking that I don't think it got. I really wanted to put this on ms, but I've heard ya'll people mix and it doesn't stand a chance. This I don't think will be getting handed out...thanks for listening to my venting.

Shane

If it's any consolation I'm sure it's better than any mix I've ever done. Wait...I've never mixed before. Sorry! Hang in there kid, think of it as writer's block for a DJ.

#249144Post 3 of 31

Heh, thanks skahound, lol! Sometimes I listen to my really old demos and I think I mixed better back then than I do now! I'll try again tomorrow, won't get anywhere giving up. Late.

know how u feel.

somehow when arent recording ur fucking great and then the second u hit that record button, it all goes to pot.

i hate my mixes when i listen back to em, notice all the little inmperfections - but my mates say they are great and when i listen back to them after a while, i dont even notice.

its just a bad patch, it will come good

Re:: I'm pissed at myself...

I think it is the hardest thing ever to put a demo together at home. You don't have the energy of people to feed from and everything gets over thought. I try and record all as many of my sets out live as I can. If you play for a couple hours you will usually end up with a chunck good for on disk. Plus it has a much more natural flow. If you dont play out much bring some friends to your place and just play for them like you would out. Rock on. :RockOn:

I'm the same way, when I know I am recording I tend to not trust my instincts as much as when playing in front of people. I think when we are in front of people, like Scott said, you feed off them. I finally just made a new recording last week, when my website is up, I will have it on there for you guys to listen to and give me some feedback.

Shane, we are all human and in this place I have noticed alot of people go thru the same stuff I do. We put alot of pressure on ourselves sometimes, but thats the beauty of it, we are perfectionists, and as we should be. :D It is a very suppportive place, we are all here to listen and to help one another, and thats what makes [ms] special. Anyway, keep at it mate. Let us hear something soon, cheers!

DJ's are their own worst critics...and if you're a producer too, well you're just damn well screwed...:lol:

you're better off sometimes recording live sets instead of home demos..not only do you probably mix "better" but it's a definitive true-to-life form of how you do mix and sound like.

Also, a good way is to start mixing to get into the flow of things, then try hitting the record button...you could always do a quick post-edit afterwards.

But yes, no recording=bad ass...knowing of recording = f'ups...

#249172Post 11 of 31

try again tommorrow. dont ever give up.

#249206Post 12 of 31

I love you guys! I'll have something up soon, my first upload to ms...!

#249217Post 13 of 31

Re:: I'm pissed at myself...

dude you have the same problem i have...lack of motivation! :Down: it's hard to get motivated when you are playing for your dogs...my advice is try to get another friend who spins over and feed of each others mixes.... all my friends are to busy so none come over .... tickets to vegas are cheap!

:mrgreen:

hey man, at least you try.. i have no decks, and have sworn off attempting to spin until i can afford some. my buddy has some and always offers for me to try.. i just hold out every time. keep up the good work, eventually youll get something you are happy with, and maybe we could all listen :D

might be a decent idea for [ms] to have a "ms peeps" section where every couple of weeks or so a featured mix from an ms person is hosted

#249415Post 17 of 31

just always hit record... everytime you play...

you won't be nervous about being recorded if everything under the sun is recorded imo...

#249417Post 18 of 31

Don't give up. I know exact what your saying too. I hate recording myself b/c I pick every bad there is to pick out of a mix. But when I don't record myself I seem to do a lot better. It sucks. Maybe sometime I will get a good mix for you all to hear.

You should just jump on the decks. it's amazing how fast you can come up with the money to buy them after you get your feet wet, lol. Thats what happened to me when one of my mates left his decks at my gaff after a party. Within two weeks I had my own.

Also, I've noticed when I've handed out mixes to people and point out where I know I messed up or whatever, it is amazing how many of them are like, wow, I didnt even notice, of course unless they spin themselves. But I notice the more I do the better I feel about each one.

Another thing is, every little thing is going to be picked up when recording. Alot of shit you can get away with live, is way more noticeable when recorded. So it you have a flawless demo, your live skills are most likely that much better IMO.

Definitely gonna record everytime I mix from now on, that will cure the record fright! Also, what I did when saving up for decks was get a 5 gallon water bottle and I put a sign on it saying "Shane's turntable fund...please give til it hurts" After that ALL my friends were bringing over change and bills, some dropped twenties after I got em hammered! Try that, it worked for me!

recording yourself gets easier over time. when i used to record mix tapes i would stop them and start over if i made the slightest mistake. now when i hit record, i get a slight rush and pretend i am playing to a crowd. practice makes near perfect. it also helps me to not have any distractions: cell phones, tv, roomates, or anyone around that can interrupt.

Very tru, very tru!

Re:: I'm pissed at myself...

Shane, dont listen to any of them, theyre all demons sent here to give you bum information. Forget about music, sell you`re decks, records and amp and rent a small pig farm in Nicosia. :twisted:

Can you not just hard disk record thru wave lab, and then burn it if it comes out ok?

#249651Post 28 of 31

^ you can with soundforge. it initially saves as a WAV (default) then you can encode to your liking from there.

#249745Post 29 of 31

^Or just use Total Recorder and it does everything for you.

#249793Post 30 of 31

Re:: I'm pissed at myself...

i have a shittty sound card on my computer so i use an actual stand alone cd recorder .... :Scared:
^Or just use Total Recorder and it does everything for you.
Sorry, I wasnt really asking if it was possible, I use wavelab. I was asking if he had the capability, as it would save on the cost of cd's if he did it that way, and then burnt it to cd.

Also WaveLab lets you HD record directly as an MP3 if you wish to do so, or a Wave (of course, lol)
