anyone suffer from it? i think my left hand is fucked. no pun intended here.

seriously though, about two and a half years i fell at work. all my weight landed on my left hand because my feet were up in the air due to a wet floor at work. now only in the past year is my hand getting worse. today has been the worst ever as im experiencing brutal pain in my index and thumb.

what does one take to subside the pain? cos this shit is getting unbearable.

Re: arthritis

Do you do repetitive movements with your hands for work, could be carpal tunnel also.
no jan. dont have insurance at the moment. but it is open enrollment month. i'll be signing up soon.
Wiki says: Treatment options vary depending on the type of arthritis and include physical and occupational therapy, medications (symptomatic or targeted at the disease process causing the arthritis), and as a last resort, arthroplasty. Although prosthetic joint replacement is a treatment of last resort, it is generally very effective and more than 90% of patients are very satisfied.

I guess anything with cortizones will do the job perfectly, but in the long run there are too many downsides to cortizone treatment.

Re: arthritis

i hear what you're saying man. something I did a while back to my wrist still haunts me to this day. if i push a door open the wrong way i'm screwed for like two weeks, or do one too many pushups, i end up not being able to pick up a glass or whatever for a while. i don't even know what it was that I did originally but damn. sux. ibuprofen is about the only over the counter thing you can do.

besides the obvious endless droning away on the computer im also a waiter for a day job. so yes repetitive motion day in, day out.

Re: arthritis
prosthetic joint replacement
this is so far from what i want to do. ive already had a couple operations done for various natural or unnatural ailments, that another one is far down the line of options.

Re: arthritis

are you sure it is arthritis ? arthritis is not due to a shock but other causes. You may have fragilised bones and/or cartilages - if this is the case, long term immobilization is the only solution - whith drinking water, taking high intakes of calcium... If this is causing you constant pain, if you can not sleep, you should get it both checked and have it immobilized with a plaster

Re: arthritis

thats the thing im not sure what it is. all i know is that it really hurts sometimes, and other times it is fine. but i think with the weather getting cooler it is effecting it bigtime now.

Re: arthritis

cartilage is very sensitive to humidity - pain kilers and a plaster is my verdict, try to use your other hand as much as possible

#749179Post 14 of 25

Re: arthritis

i definitely favor that hand a lot more now. i am more aware of picking up heavier stuff with that hand. but in my line of work, using one hand is not an option. :what

I'd research this, Jib... It's classified under those "alternative supplement therapies" that the docs typically won't give to you (they only give you expensive and powerful synthetic drugs). I don't know much about this stuff. But I know it is available and isn't some crazy stuff that could make you grow a third arm - there is lots of data on this. It did complete wonders for my dad's knee, and I've heard that to be the case for others as well...and the doctors were gonna cut open his knee and mess around with his cartilige and stuff like that...never had to go there.

Re: arthritis

put it this way: the more you use it, the more you might hurt it more, the worst the condition might get. if you already at a stade where you complain about it, it means it's quite painful - so try to get better advice than ours and try not to use it too much

you'd be in Paris, I'd send you to someone I know who'd do it in 40 minutes

Re: arthritis

I have arthritis sometimes and it specially hurts when it's very humid or cold. I broke a few ribs playing hockey and i found it was much worse when i was in an arena. But it comes and goes i don't use any medication right now. See a Doc find out for sure what it is.

Re: arthritis

Jib, if it is indeed a cartilage type injury the glucosamine and chondroitin are helpful in rebuilding cartilage, i'm a hardcore cyclist riding around 800 miles a month and have found this supplement very helpful with the joints in my knees, but please seek professional advice. A dj needs the equipment to be working properly

Re: arthritis

believe it or not I do have it in my right knee. massive cartlidge wear under my knee cap caused it. some days it is painful, but inflamatory meds are the only thing to help the pain. but before you give yourself a self diagnosis, go see a fookn doctor

Re: arthritis

that helps in case of osteoarthrosis, but not for arthritis.

Re: arthritis

might be some injury on your hand/wrist soft tissues. sounds unlikely to be a kind of arthritis in case it is the first, because this happened long tome ago, you might have a kind of chronic tendinitis. the easiest thing to do is to take anti-inflamatory pills (ibuprofen is good) as a temporary reliever. if that doesnt work for a long term, you might have to infiltrate steroids in that tendon at least once. good luck

Re: arthritis

see a doc

my mum had to retire on ill health pensione due to arthritis (she was a nurse)

now she's back and forth to the docs. blood tests, new drugs, this, that.

get it looked at, it will get worse (if it is arthritis)

so best to get it checked out.

otherwise wank with the other hand. you'll be fine. or maybe to like the stiff awkward movements accompanied by the pain!!!
