Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix

this is not electro music (far from it). he just starts with some deep weird house music (which passes as mnml these days). as far as missing the boat? this guy has been playing fucked up house music since he was in diapers. warming up for s+d in the twilo days, this guy made a living on this music. i think in this mix he is just providing something to chill and listen to (why i love it). and if you check him out live you will get the agressive jimmy.

and some of you, do not like the weird slower house music (dont like calling it mnml)... which is fine. but i hardly seeing him changing his style or missing the boat.

Imo, put simply - darkness, bleeps, clicks and irregularities..

hmmm imo that minimal sound has ruined all the djs that i used to love to death.

what turns people on to these sounds....some kind of substance must be needed because i sure cant figure it out sober.

Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix

no substance is needed my friend. you just have to be into it i guess. cause i love it. i will take the first half of jimmys set over any kiss show this year. when i am out its a bit different. than i prefer some techno, claude von stroke... etc.

different strokes for different fokes

Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix

Just like it happened with "electro", I think people are calling minimal a lot of stuff that isn´t minimal.

People are talking about James Holden in another thread, well, despite what he might say against it, I think his sound is by definition, minimal. That is, it´s made up of very few elements, it´s loop based and anchored on repetition, lots of importance is given to the silence between the sounds, most of it´s sounds are very raw, i.e., true minimal producers will not use many effects and many of the notes will be painstakingly wiorked on, instead.

IMO, a lot of what people call electro or minimal is actually prog house reduced to it´s bare elements, mainly the beats are subdued instead of maximized and compressed, the melodies are decomposed and simplified...but I´d say many of prog´s elements are there...it´s just kind of "skeletal" prog house...and that´s why many prog DJ´s embraced it.

Anyone willing to spend a few hours on Beatport listening to stuff like what the Arabica label puts out, or tracks like Phonique - The River (Robert Babicz Remix), Ada - Call The Tune or Ellen Allien & Apparat´s "Jet" will immediately see many prog-influenced elements and melodies...yet they will call it minimal...

Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix

^^ completely agree. thats why i didnt think jimmys mix was minimal. just deep fucked up house music.

haven't heard the other stuff, but the phonique and ada tracks are prog in my books...

There you go. And yet, check out what people call artists like Phonique, Ada, and Babicz. Check out where they?re listed at Beatport, etc.

I actually think melody is becoming more and more evident in many tracks by these artists and I think this is the way prog will become "big" again, except it will have picked up all these influences. To me, a new wave of progressive house is just around the corner.

Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix

well mimimal is still better then electro. this set is a nice tease till my copy of Balance 010 arrives on thursday. While we are on the subject of JVM, have any of you heard his Trance Nation America(silly name,IMO) mix cd he did with Taylor in 2000. This is one of those underrrated gems that if you can, pick up a copy. Excellent mix, dark and thumping.Perfect.

well depends on what 'electro' youre talking about really.

real electro is completely different from electro house which is so popular these days.

check the label 'touchin bass', andrea parkers label, for some real general electro imo.

check mashtronic for electro house done well.

there's a broad spectrum out there...

Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix
Lisle has gone that route, so has Fortier (minimal, that is), but I think they've managed to get their own sound going. In the case of JVM (from this mix), it just feel like too little too late. IMO anyway. Will wait to check out the Balance mix :D
IMO. three dj's...well two actually because I used to dig JVM...that I can't listen to anyway. Lisle has always been a warm up dj to me, same with JVM but he has promise. And Fortier...OMG this guy is nothing but a follower. Never got into him...doubt I ever will

IMO JVM's set is a good set to fall asleep to.... He needs to step it up a bit or else the music is going to pass him by... (But who em i to say) guess theres a time and place for all music.....
