Re: Kiss100 October 29th - Digweed + Jimmy van M guest mix
Just like it happened with "electro", I think people are calling minimal a lot of stuff that isn´t minimal.
People are talking about James Holden in another thread, well, despite what he might say against it, I think his sound is by definition, minimal. That is, it´s made up of very few elements, it´s loop based and anchored on repetition, lots of importance is given to the silence between the sounds, most of it´s sounds are very raw, i.e., true minimal producers will not use many effects and many of the notes will be painstakingly wiorked on, instead.
IMO, a lot of what people call electro or minimal is actually prog house reduced to it´s bare elements, mainly the beats are subdued instead of maximized and compressed, the melodies are decomposed and simplified...but I´d say many of prog´s elements are there...it´s just kind of "skeletal" prog house...and that´s why many prog DJ´s embraced it.
Anyone willing to spend a few hours on Beatport listening to stuff like what the Arabica label puts out, or tracks like Phonique - The River (Robert Babicz Remix), Ada - Call The Tune or Ellen Allien & Apparat´s "Jet" will immediately see many prog-influenced elements and melodies...yet they will call it minimal...
