Just returned from the Playa del Carmen region of Mexico -- my wife and I went down to celebrate our first anniversary. Anyway, we stumbled upon a couple of other people from St. Louis while we were there (which was ironic because there were only a handful of Americans in the whole resort) -- a mother and daughter team that exemplified the term "ugly Americans."

The mom, in particular, was tan in the way I've never seen before with skin texture closely resembling a baseball glove. Her voice sounded like that of Burgess Meredith in his role as The Penguin in the old Batman show. We were talking with them after they returned from a shopping trip in Playa del Carmen, when she unfurled this absurd complaint:

"All of these people kept coming up to us and speaking to us in Mexican. I was like, 'Why are you talking to me in that language?' [insert 3 Penguin-like sounds here]."

I shuddered, not just at the fact that she evidently believes that there is a language called Mexican, but that she was annoyed that someone would have the audacity to address her in "Mexican" -- IN MEXICO.

Know why people addressed you in Spanish? How about because you're in a Spanish-speaking country?

And of course, these kncukleheads are always the ones that are most vocal about being Americans when they're abroad. I'd like to add this story to the "Why people hate Americans" discussion that was going on some time ago.

Re: Speaking Mexican

Toasty. I have seen this plenty of times, it is so ugly, such a disresepct to culture and land. You wonder why so many other people have such a high disrespect for "our" people.

Re: Speaking Mexican

along these lines, my college roomie was of portuguese descent. and from time to time when we were all hammed up, he would drop portuguese into sections of his sentences and people would just kinda be like ''huh'', but he would continue the sentences along with english. it was hilarious when someone on shrooms or E would come up to our place for a party and he would literally fuck with people for hours on end without chinging his face as if he werent doing it.

Re: Speaking Mexican

When Christy and i were in Rivera Maya for our wedding, we were sitting at the pool bar and an American woman and her daughter swam up and took a seat. They didn't look like the couple you encountered toasty, they were both actually very good looking, which is probably why the bartender didn't roll his eyes every time the mother spoke. She spoke to the mexican bartenter like he was 12, slowing her speech, nodding her head with each word, and adding "o" to the end of american words, because of course, that's exactly how you speako el spanisho.

Happy anniversary Toasty! :Cheerz:

and don't get me started on dumb Americans...

Re: Speaking Mexican

actually a think it really is "mexican", words like "wey=dude, pendejo=asshole, chale=damn...etc" are use it mainly over here and not in every speaking spanish country. In fact, it is really funny cause, if you choose the option "spanish" on a dvd movie they really speak mexican. So i think no one should feel offended, well at least i didnt.

Re: Speaking Mexican
i can see that.

being from england, i can confirm that the language americans speak is american
It's very true. I realize that everytime I'm in England or speak to English people...we speak very different variations on a similar language...just say aluminum or herb and you'll hear the difference ;) and that's just pronunciation differences, let alone the vocabulary differences. The English are much better at the subtle differences in synonyms than Americans are.

Re: Speaking Mexican

england english vs american english has more to do with english people having such terrible dental situations that they cant clearly pronounce words.

I hear ya, and I also agree with the folks that have pointed out the difference between British English and American English, but trust me on this one, this gal wasn't trying to draw that fine distinction!!

Re: Speaking Mexican

OK, finally got some pics uploaded. Here ya go:

BTW, we stayed at the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya outside of Akumal (near Playa del Carmen). Great place, very contemporary...

Here's the entrance:

lobby

a couple of broad overviews of the complex

a shot of the resort from an island in front of the resort:

place had a couple of cenotes on the property -- here's one

general shot of the grounds:

obligatory beach shot:

and some shots of the pools -- first, a huge cool-water jacuzzi that poured into a lower pool:

that pool

and another freeform pool that wrapped throughout the lower part of the reosrt

finally, they had this garden of globes and coral that lit up at night. Was very cool in person, not sure if the picture does it justice..

Anyway, thanks for the interest -- enjoy the pics!
