What do u think about all this mess with breaks music? will it kill house or will they go together or this is just fashion thing (as electro used to be :)?

BTW: breaks vs. progressive
They both have there place.
I don't think that breaks is a fashion thing, it has been around for years and has only become more popular over the last year or so.
here we go again. like breaks is somethnig that just came out.
breaks are finally getting the attention they deserve. Breaks are alot more open to be creative, imo, that prog is. BUT, i still tend to listen to prog alot more than breaks. i think breaks will subtly fade where we'll hear a nice mixture of both genres. right now though, breaks certainly seem to be more popular.
as long as you're not talking about florida breaks...why the competition? nothing is going to kill anything...dj's have always played, bought, and produced breaks as well as straight beats...

id agree that they are def getting more popular because they are more accessible and radio friendly than a prog tune for example.
on the other hand i wouldnt say "they are finally getting the attention they deserve"...theyve been massively popular for over a good year and a half now. when i really got into dance music over 4 years ago breaks were few and far between at gigs here in oz....now they have exploded to ridiculous proportions. which is a shame for me because i got into prog the year and a half ago when breaks blew up.....and prog blew out. go figure :roll:
imo the funkier side of breaks these days is fuckin shizen. completely recycled and everyone is cashing in on stealing a guitar riff and throwing it into in a breaks tune. typical market saturation.
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
Both are great in their own ways. Its always good to have more variety.
Why does it have to be one or the other?
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
I like both of them!
I like them both. But I tend to listen to more prog then breaks mostly.
Most breaks still have an emphasis on the 1 and the 3 so in that realm they make a perfect compliment to one another, not a competition...
DJs that can wind in and out of breaks and straight 4-4 in a set are doing the listener a favour IMHO.
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
breaks are awesome in a progressive mix, they create a nice atmosphere in the mix you have to have a good dj to know how to fill breaks in a progressive mix so that it sounds good, and sasha and jz sure know how
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
IMHO 1.breaks have never been so quality as today because most prog or house or breaks scene talents are working on it 2.as history shows, only the root styles remain (like house, hiphop, techno) and all the branches die out or transform (acidhouse, hardcore, electro,etc) 3. therefore, breaks are becoming an alternative for prog (sooner or later both will fade out) 4. so, I will not be suprised if tomorow we'll hear about the techno-house-hiphop-acid revival.
Music is not underground anymore. Fact.
unome, whay do you have to come up with a comment like that to try to kill the discusion, by implying that this is a stupid question? breaks has been around for a while, of course, but only the last year or so the big prog dj's has started mixing in breaks tunes into prog sets, and I love it. A prog set with a few breaks tunes just makes the roof lift. Also been seeing more and more dj's playing only breaks sets. I think breaks is here to stay for good. But i dont think breaks has that much to do with house though...
here we go again. like breaks is somethnig that just came out.
I love Nu Skool, as opposed to proggressive breaks.
i like a lot of different styles of electronic music. i love breaks and i love house. it seems inevitable that breaks are coming more and more into proggy sets, coz you gotta get tired of hearing the same thing over and over... gotta have some variety. i say bring on the breaks :RockOn:
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
I like some breaks, particularly Hyper and the Distinctive sound. Everyone has been going on about house and trance fading for years ,in London both these are still very strong,many more of these nights than breaks nights (breaks is still an underground sound)

I agree.
I am a breaks whore. I love them.

- I don't understand.....
- history? We are in the middle of it right now. The history of edm doesn't go back very far or far enough to make that statement.
- Alternatives? How bout no. EDM is a melting pot of styles some are just "cooler" than others at the moment. Breaks have been around since the 60's. More djs are just playing them now.
- I think its going on now, has been and will always be..... people will always look to the past for influence.
I just think your lack of exposure has brought you to all these assumptions. :Bingo:
bring the breaks bitch!

sorry!! i was gonna edit but palmer beat me ;)
i'm over it 8)
palmer beat you :shock:
It doesn't matter for me, breaks are breaks and progressive is progressive. i like both. And Zabiela showed us with his renaissance album that breaks can be more than just nu skool or progressive breaks. Really a great album.
here we go again. like breaks is somethnig that just came out.
exactly! i have mad love for breaks, chi-town/NY house and the dweep dark prog house. each style has a time and a place. i don't listen to breaks as a way to relax before bed. i don't listen to prog house when i am on the way to work first thing in the morning. ya follow! :Rolling:
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
Some breaks for me are alright. I can't stand whole sets full of breaks. Maybe one or two tracks in an hour mix. But not the whole mix.
I think a lot of us are thinking that breaks are getting more play because we just happen to listen to Digweeds show where he keeps playing breaks records. I have pretty much stopped listening to his sets. Hell I don't need to know what it coming out anymore. I've got friends that are way up on that.
JZ, is a good breaks dj. Mostly because when he plays he plays faster than what others play and that makes the breaks a bit more interesting. Same with Phil K. I have yet to give myself time to listen to Meatie...Get a real freaking name.

not true...
the Northern Exposure series had plenty of breakbeat driven tracks...
Nick Warren has been playing breakbeat-based tracks in his "progressive" sets for years along with Sasha, Digweed, and the other so-called big DJ's...
as others have mentioned, breakbeat has been around for years...
this topic has been done to death on this board...
this thread = 0/5 IMO
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
Is the prog community so out of touch with the rest of the electronic music scene that they didn't notice breaks until now? Breaks rock, always have.
Re:: BTW: breaks vs. progressive
i think we should all sit back, relax, and feel the serenity.

:LoveYou:
prog breaks need to be darker...they sound too much like music that pansies listen too....prog breaks need some more balls added to them.
its all about the plump djs :Bingo:
