Well, once again the Portugese dance music scene manages to make a spectale of itself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7oj57a88Vk (wait for the news presenter to stop talking)

This past sunday morning at Pacha Ofir (basically the biggest club in the country at the moment), late into a DJ Vibe/Victor Calderone double bill, a crowd of between 60-100 started a riot inside the club.

They aparently benefited from the fact that there wasn?t absolutely any sort of control or body-search at the entrance, to gather inside Pacha and then proceded to cause all sorts of trouble, like invading the VIP area, assaulting the female dancers, escalading onto the DJ booth (while Vibe was playing!!), etc. until finally all hell broke loose, with bottles, chairs, sofas, flying everywhere, and just a handful of security armed with sticks  faced the invaders, getting their asses kicked in the process, until the police finally arrived, being even forced to use tear gas inside the club!

A friend of mine told me he saw one of the "gangsters" breaking two full bottles on his chest and screaming "who?s in charge now?!?!?" at the security, completely off his mind

The fight spilled onto the parking lot, which, acording to reports resulted in many injured and blood everywhere...the police pursued a car with some rioters for a few miles, which resulted in a traffic accident...

well, enough... look at the video, it represents the end of he riot inside the club, so there?s not so much stuff happening at the time, but I think you?ll get the picture...

And there you go, a place which has played host to the biggest DJ?s in the world (Digweed, Tiesto, Carl Cox, Sander, etc.), will probably close now, due mostly to the greed of it?s owners, who wanted to make the biggest possible profit on the back of the most popular DJ in the country (Vibe). It?s always been a somewhat troubled place (associated with drug traffic), but this was surely the final straw. :(

If I didn?t know you better, I?d be pissed.

Actually, I wish these guys were beaner wanabbe?s, but they?re more like our own wannabe OG?s and wiggas, they?re all drug dealers and always packin? guns, wearin? caps in stupid ways, you know the score...except they don?t listen to just hip-hop, they?re also techno and tribal house fans...

I suspect the club?s owners are somehow involved in all this drugs business.

I heard some guy threw a bottle at Calderone?s head and missed only by a fraction

You bet.

There were 2500 people inside the 6000-capacity club at the time (7.30 a.m.), fortunately most of them managed to run away before the worst part of the riot, or else it could have been a real tragedy.

Apparently the same guys attacked people at nearby gas stations, coffee houses and even the local hospital :( .

I'm sorry to hear what went down mate, but you gotta remember the 99.999999% of the people in that club are the good guys. Don't let a few bad eggs ruin it for you.

If there's one thing I know about the portugese its that they do good chicken. In Sydney we have 3 good fast food chains which are portugese chicken shops - Oportos, Ogalos, and Ole's. Why do they all start with O I'll never know, but they've taught me that the portugese should be granted the odd riot since they make good chicken burgers.

If you're ever in Australia Kinetic you can come and cook me some chicken.

Ok mate, I?ll be happy to oblige. That?s not all we cook well either. You should see how we cook fish, we?re the best in the world at it.

Bah... whatever, Pacha was the only place besides the major arena and outdoors events that still managed to attract big, big names over here, but honestly I went there only once to see Diggers and I hated the place. Fortunately the smaller electro house and tech house oriented clubs usually have good line-ups and good atmospheres, it?s probably just as well that this happened to put an end to what I call "shopping mall clubbing".

That's the good thing about dance music. Provided your city is big enough (and some that are not), there's always a very good local talent pool which a lot of the time can out-perform a lot of the internationals we pay big bucks to see.

Re: Riot at Pacha, Portugal at DJ Vibe/Calderone show

this type of thing happens every once in a while at said 'shopping mall clubs'. 2 New Years eve's ago a similar situation happened for PVD @ exit nyc, resulting in a stabbing and obviously early end to the 'celebration'....

STFU AND DANCE!

In our case, it?s a mix of football hooligan culture with hip-hop culture. The bottom point is that these guys didn?t go to the party to enjoy the music, just like they don?t go to football games to watch the game.

This riot happened in the north, where hooliganism has more weight than hip-hop, but where I live (in the south), hip-hop culture is everywhere, we have huge ghettos in the outskirts of the capital mainly made up of sons of african immigrants, and our youth culture, white or black, has more and more of a hip-hop influence everyday.
