my evening at the Giant party

okay, so fwiw, I went to this party, and I thought I'd share my experience with my fellow ms members. You know, to give back a little.

So I finally have a friend to go to events with, and I was hoping that he would bring along some of his friends, hopefully females, but they all cancelled. The tickets were $75 for general admission, and 120 for VIP (I could be wrong about the vip price, but it was within $10 of that).

So VIP is supposed to include "special vip entrance, open bar all night" and they also alluded to some special music or something, making it sound like digweed was going to spin an extra mini set in the VIP area. Sounds great. I heard GIANT is terrible with managing will call and lines, so we order the VIP tickets.

Well, turns out EVERYONE bought the fucking VIP tickets, and the line for VIP entrance was 30 minutes!!! And of course we walk by the line for general admission and there is no line. Just right in. Now you'd think that if you had a VIP ticket you could get in at the general entrance, right? Wrong.

So the line is right behind the stage where Zabs is spinning. He had some breakbeat stuff going on, but I couldn't here it very well from the line.

So we get in, and there is a VIP 'room' which is the garage of some huge building I think. There is absolutely no circulation in there, and it is hot as fuck. And to make things worse, the line for the 'open bar' is HUGE. So another 20 minutes go by before we get to the front of the bar. We realized by now it would have been much better just to get general admission and use $40 on alchohol. There is no special setup for any VIP djs, just a couple of speakers hooked up to the feed from the Digweed stage. LAME. Then when we get to the front of the line, they say "one drink per person". What the FUCK. So I manage to talk her into getting me two, and make her pour straight tequilla into them, do a shot of vodka before leaving, and head outside.

Zabiela was tearing it up. I walk out and he was playing some awesome, awesome shit. Using the Effects box to full 'effect' pun intended. It was great. I wish I could have seen more than just the last half hour of his set.

More later, I'm too hot in here...

Re: my evening at the Giant party

okay, apparently I had slept with my contacts in last night, then forgot they were in and wore my glasses all day long. No wonder I was feeling so strange.... I don't know how I didn't notice that. I just thought I was incredibly hung over.

So anyways,

Zabiela, man he was rocking it big time. Awesome tunes. Like I said before, he had this pioneer effects box, I forget what the model is on it, but he's been using them for a while. I think they had a Xone 464 set up as well, and he was playing all from CDJs. He had some vocal loops on the effects box, and would create little patterns by hitting a pad on the box, then loop it and add more and more. Then he would turn the pitch up and double the speed of the measure, and high pass filter it while filtering the beats the same way (with the Xone filter), and create a breakdown , then drop it all back in. It was good stuff.

After he was done, we went around too see what the other stages were like. There were three main large stages, and two smaller tents in the middle that had hybrid and the house djs. I think we made our way past the trance area, and on to see Paul Oakenfold. I figured I might as well see him just to say that I had, plus my friend is more in to trance and wanted to see him too. I couldn't believe that there were so many people there to see him. I guess all that marketing pays off, because he had 2 times as many people as any other stage. I distinctly remember him playing what sounded like a remix of Sasha's Expander, but it wasn't really that good of a remix if that's what it was. He was actually mixing up there, and had some long hair I think, but I didn't really dig his sound very much.

So then after waiting in line for another 20 minutes to get a refill on the alchohol, diggers was just about starting, so we got to listen to that for a while. The sound there was all coming from the front of the stage, there were no speakers around the side. It sounded good, but I did notice the difference from a club atmosphere with speakers all around. I was dancing pretty hard to that, then we went back to the other stage to see deep dish. They were playing alright, I haven't seen them in 3 years though, but it was good. I would have preferred more digweed, but we were locked in the deep dish groove. I remember them playing a track from their George is On, the song with Stevie Nicks on vocals (I think I'm spelling her name wrong). I think we headed back for a little more digweed, and before I knew it it was 4am, and the event was over! I was way to tired and dehydrated (It was so so hot I had my shirt off half the time or it would be completely soaked through) to think about the Mayan, so we passed on that.

so one more thing, a week or two ago I had met this couple at a party, and they said they were into digweed and stuff, and I asked them if they were going to this, and the girl said she was. So I email her and tell her to come along with us, or at least call me when we get there, and she writes back:

"I'm not sure what time we're heading out since it depends on the rest of the crew. I pretty much want to be there around 10pm b/c of various djs I want to see but I'll be kart racing during the day so I'm not sure what time I'll be back. I think we're meeting up in westLA somewhere. Wanna just call me when you get to the event if you want to hang? I'll be running around all over the place sporadically kickin it with my friends. Hmm...I dunno if I'll even take my mobile. well, here it is anyway..."

wtf?? That is so weird and rude I think. telling someone to call them then saying you won't bring your phone... right? So I knew I had to think of a great response to that, to really fuck with her. I wanted her to think I was retarded basically, since she must already think I was to not see her being a bitch.

my reply was thus:

"Hey, I think you're right it's time. Its going to be awesome. Your phones number is close to mine ill call it when u r here if I see you okay? this will rule!

when we meet i will sho u power dancing haha. Its pretty cool i can do it okay.

Peace

ps do you know the mayan. it will be a party too we should go after you leave."

well that's the story... hope you all can possibly continue to live your lives somehow, after witnessing the joy that is mine.

Re: my evening at the Giant party

:roflmao: Yeah. I used to go to many Giant parties prior to them getting the boot from Circus Disco and then came in Spundae, along with the renovations. Years ago we would get the VIP stuff (like once or twice) to get in faster but we quickly knew to give it up to get in faster. The outdoor events were always shit for getting drinks. :roflmao: It's hilarious. At least you had some fun.

Wow beanz that means that we were in the same venue many many times. I didn't miss a single week starting with their 3rd week.

Re: my evening at the Giant party

why did you make yourself seem retarded, it should have been the other way around. anyways, great story. I didn't go to the GIANT party because I hate huge crowds like you just described. I did go to the Mayan, and it was great. It was only Kazell and a few no-names, but nonetheless a great morning :)

Dude you?re a great story teller, feels like I was right there with you. Yeah, I wish I would have gone as I really wanted to see JZ, and I'm sure Diggers was on point as well. Caught Kazell instead, and I'm pleased to say that we have this guy representing Los Angeles. His sounds were just great, no regrets missing the Festival after seeing Kazell. Next on the list is Luke Fair and Porter for the month of August, as I got to make up for missing Diggers and Zabiela.

Oh man. A sad day this is. That's a beat matching box! Why, God, why? Digs, you don't do it by your ears anymore? I know it's the programming that counts, but shouldn't you be able to do the chore that is mixing still? Or does Sasha on the Ableton release you from that requirement.

In other news, he's apparently married.

Yep, the Red Sound C-Loops sampler. It was used throughout the recent North American Transitions tour as well.

So that's what I've been missing! If I get that I'll be as good as Diggers. ;)

Re: my evening at the Giant party

He's not getting any younger - maybe he can't mix properly because of the ear plugs he usually has in.

Re: my evening at the Giant party

digweed's been using the red sound for ages. it helps with those luscious long mixes

nobody played at sashas wedding, there were mariachis and stuff like that.

btw, how can he play with those shitty tagged cds, i know we all have our own way to tag them, but he put up to 8 tracks into that cd with that terrible handwriting... i think he sould buy a cd printer at least.

Do you seriously think he would lug a cd printer around on tour with him with the amount of music / kit he has to anyway. If you think he sits at home and downloads all his tracks for his shows before he travels to play you would be mistaken. End of the day its his own handwriting, he can read it, and thats all that matters, and the bonus is that it also makes it impossible for sycophantic trainspotters hanging over the decks to decipher.

Re: my evening at the Giant party

^^ lol @ that

I can just see digweed now plugging in his cd printer in his hotel room. hahaha. "Damn I'm out of paper again!" then heading to office depot to get a refill on ink.

Digweed once said in an interview that he would never organize his records because it would take the fun out of djing.
