Re: When You Were 10 Years Old...

A Vauxhall Victor 101 Estate. When I was little I used to think that everyone's Dad had to spend a week underneath the car fixing it before going on holiday.

My parents had a Vega Wagon. My dad was into customizing, so he had rims on it, different pipes and dark tinted windows. My brothers and I thought we were the shit driving in that car! :p

Re: When You Were 10 Years Old...

Looking at all those old cars from the past is funny, good post Algy. Gremlins are the most ugly pieces of shit I have ever seen lol. Ford Capri is Cult though. My parents had a BMW 3000 V8 when I was ten years old. I still remember how I fell in love with that car when I saw it for the 1st time (1978 :| ).

My Mother was against the car because it used too much fuel and insurrance was very high but my Father bought it nevertheless and crashed it completely only 4 years later.

After the BMW experience, my dad bought a Toyota Celica Liftback..also a nice car. I know why a car is not only a vehicle to drive from point a to point b for me. ;)

Re: When You Were 10 Years Old...

My mother had one of these

Fiat 127

And my father had one of these

Renault 16

The Renault had the gearstick right next to the steering wheel...it was really weird, but it already had electric windows, which was quite rare at the time (at least over here).

1979 BMW 318. My dad bought it in Germany and drove it to London.

It was dark blue and I never appreciated the fact we had a BMW until the engine broke. it was parked up on the street for years, completely imobile and then one night someone managed to steal it.

had another Toyota too; don't remember off hand which model.

Bought a '90 Camry ~2 years later when the Corolla bit the dust; lasted until 3 years ago when we sold it.

Family's been all about Toyota...and 1 Ford which eventually turned out to be my first car a short time later: '88 Mercury Topaz :D (back when Ford actually BUILT them tough)

Re: When You Were 10 Years Old...

Actually, the 80s were a very bad decade for Ford in general. And on that note, every fucking Chevy car out now is fucking awful. Were they trying to make them look as bad as Pontiacs? :roflmao:

Man man man, now that is nostalgia. I "inherited" my dad's 240D after I wrecked my first car (Renault 4 van). You're damn right those cars are tanks. I managed to drive around with an empty cooling circuit (leak in the radiator) once and twice with an empty carter until the gauges went haywire and smoke was coming from under the hood. It didn't hurt the engine one single bit  Try to do that with the plastic shit they sell as cars these days

Btw, my 240D accelerated just fine so I guess there must've been something wrong with your Mercedes. Mind you, back in those days, they were very sensitive to the driving style of the first driver. I mean, if your dad always accelerated like a senior citizen (no offence), it's normal that the engine isn't "used to" leaving skidmarks. My mom drove a 200D at that time and she handled the gas pedal like if it was a pack of C4 with motion sensors. Result: 0 to 100 in 2.3 weeks :Bullshit:
