My wife and I are planning to head to Montreal some time in the months ahead and really aren't too familiar with what to do, see, etc. We've been to TO plenty and want to stray off-course and take in some other cities in Canada. Any advice?

Re: Montreal - Discuss
What do you have in mind?? like what are your interests??
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Well, it would be for a long weekend (3 days or so) so one night in a really nice restaurant for sure. We'd also like to check out museums, shopping, 'the sights', nightlife, etc. Sorry to be so broad, but that's kind of the reason I asked the question in the first place. Tell me what we should do/see while we're there.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
eat at "gibby's"...its been rated one of the top 3 restaurants in north america, and is seriously the best food i've ever had in my life by a long shot. its not cheap, but its definitely worth it. its in old montreal, near the water.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Thanks for the tip Jeff.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
no worries. when you know what days you're going, you should post 'em. some of the montreal peeps can let you know whats going on there as far as djs in town. aria and stereo are GREAT clubs, and get alot of great talent passing through.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Two summers ago me and the female friend did the long weekend thing in downtown Montreal. We went in August and it was surprisngly un-busy. I guess all the locals were on vacation, which was fine with us.
Get a downtown hotel, close to Old Montreal. Doesn't have to be in that area, but close.
We started our trip with a 3-hour bus tour, which was really helpful for getting our bearings. It either took us by or stopped at all the major places, many of which we revisited.
The Museum of Canadian History(?), Pointe a Calliere and Notre Dame-de-bon-secours were the most interesting museums.
There are also plenty of old churches. Notre Dame Basilica and Mary Queen of the World are the biggest. Notre Dame has a very good interior tour.
Outside the downtown, there's also the Olympic Stadium, which has a good tour, the Biodome, and if you like plants, the Botanical Gardens.
Those are the major things we saw. Other than that, it was just moving around the city, enjoying summer vacation, drinking beer on patios and so on.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
I go up for the Grand Prix every year, one of the best cities in the world. I'd suggest going then or during the Jazz festival... MTL is good at any time, but there are several weekends throughout the summer where they really go all out, those two being the biggest ones.
Aria is a sick club of course, and St Laurent street has tons of bars and lounges, all of them cool- Cafeteria being the best, imo.
The food, the women, the people, the culture, the weed -- everything up there is great. The have a different metality than we do here in the states, it seems like they know how to apprecitate everyday life a bit more.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Whatever you do, eat Crepes...anywhere...guaranteed mouthgasm.
Montreal Crepes ftw!!!
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Thanks Jesse.
Thanks for the tips everyone, we LOVE to eat at nice restaurants (money is no object when it comes to good food and better wine). The city seems like an easy-enough place to navigate and everything we've read discusses just how clean the city is. More info is always welcome.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Sultan has a quarterly residency at Stereo, worth checking out if the timing can work out. Im two hours to the south and would make it up to meet you guys if you have an open night. Keep me posted.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
The shops by St laurent are wonderful, she will love them :) Its a huge mall of sorts but it is like 3 levels all underground and really neat stores.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Aria, im not so sure she will like it though but maybe. The times I have been its more of a crackhead enviroment with really good music, I dont think I have ever seen so many people fucked up EVER lol.
Unless the laws have changed, there is smoking allowed everywhere. Especially sucks in clubs and stuff.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
My friend and I were just discussing going up there in august or so... I ain't never been to Montreal before, so I'm even more excited now that I know Ska's wife gonna be there too...

Oh yeah, it excites me cuz she'll be bringing you with her... ;)

You don't need to. In every store or restaurant they will say "Bonjour" then "Hello". Say hello, then they know to speak English to you, maudit Anglais!
Re: Montreal - Discuss
stereo/aria are clubs you've got to at least check out. but like DG said, it's a straight afterhours and the crowd responds in turn. the sound at stereo is the best i've ever heard bar none and the huge disco ball is pretty cool as well. hope to get back one day soon.

Re: Montreal - Discuss
huh?
i wasn't speaking of the crowds orientation. more so about the vibe being a true afterhours one. they've been doing it for awhile up there and it's the best afterhours i've ever been to. raw would be the word i'd describe it with. but mostly everyone there found an alternative to alcohol and the unisex bathrooms always provide entertainment.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
stereo & aria are both an absolute blast. i've heard in recent months though that aria has gone way downhill and now circus is making a name for itself. never been there myself though, but montreal afterhours are fucking legendary.
as for dining, here's a tip. you said you like wine? buy a bottle of your choice at a store and hit up one of the many "apportez votre vin" restos around duluth & st. denis. you can save a few bucks while still enjoying an exquisite culinary experience in a classy and intimate environment.

You talk REAL FANCY- like mister...
One of my favorite things in life is when someone calls any establishment fancy and/or classy. It's hysterical to psychoanalyze what and why they think said locale is fancy/classy. Your use of the word exquisite made me realize something... when you use the word exquisite in conjunction with fancy and/or classy, it cancels them out from fitting into my fun thinking and laughing time. I can't type my entire reason for this or I'll be here all night, but ask me about it next time you come up to NYC and get cracky, umkay?

OIC, thank you :)
And out of curiousity, do they stop serving alchohol at a specific time or it's all the time? Depending on which it is really interests me because of your phrasing choice of "everyone there found an alternative to alcohol" and what made you put it that way.... :)

 Yep, I'm confused now. That entire paragraph was written jokingly, so sorry if I offended... or entertained... or both...
as for another visit, it may well be in september at the earliest. i've got 2 more weekends here, 1 of which i'll be in providence, RI, and the other a lawler/sasha double-header-blowout-grand finale-farewell DC-extravaganza. Hopefully it'll be classy...
or at least a little fancy.

You've got 1 more weekend there if my math is correct then... ;)
May the fancy be with you...

Even where I be from, 1 + 1 = 2.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
I would agree Montreal for the nightlife but I can suggest Ottawa 2 hour drive from Montreal. There you will find many museums there is also the parliement buildings you can visit, the Rideau canal ( no frozen ) longest skating rink in the world. Or you can take a boat cruise at night on the Ottawa river ( music and booze ). Over 1000 lakes in the area many good restaurants and Hotels also 2 casinos. Depending when you go there is the blues festival - jazz festival Grand feu du casino ( fireworks ) I have included a couple of links to many activities.

Technically, fancyboy's right. I only have 1 more weekend "here." The other is out of town. Either way, i'll be on an involuntary virtual hiatus from debauchery in 2 weeks time.
Anyway, back to the topic, last call in Montreal is 3 am. Aria opens @ 1:30 if I remember correctly and Stereo opens @ 3, but Stereobar in the basement is fun for some warm-up festivities. I especially enjoy the 2-way mirrors in the bathrooms.

See Joe!!!? Your math skills are less than that of a fancy-cracker-eater on hid first day back at work after a chemical bonanza of a three day weekend [bender].
Luckily, I still love you (and your now admitted-vagina-having-wife too) and was wondering when you were thinking of going up there... It would be cool if my friend and I ended up being able to go the same weekend and we could meet for the first time on foriegn soil
(even better... on foriegn soil in the front yard of giant-head vocalist Celine Dion's childhood home. That'd be sure to make all of MS fucking jealous)
Re: Montreal - Discuss
Fuck Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh
And we're thinking of October since that's when I'll get my replenishment of vacation time. I'll let you know more as we iron out the details.

i don't remember aria well, but stereo does not serve booze at any point through out the night. it doesn't take a DEA agent to realize most of the people inside arn't drunk. but thats just the kind of scene and culture that's there. theres always been a lot of other stuff in montreal, even before the afterhours scene was huge. i love stereo and can't wait to hear that sound system again.
Re: Montreal - Discuss
No booze in Aria, well none for you unless you know the right people. ;)

You need to make a stop here as well. Trust me, it's worth it solely for how out of control this place is.
