Question for art/design lovers

Would you go see an actual exibit of graphic design posters?

Do you consider computer generated art to be "real art"?

Would you buy a framed poster if you liked it enough?

I am considering investing alot of time, energy & money into a show totally devoted to design posters. I have been designing for 7 years and I am wanting to showcase my design talents and personal views, in the form of a show. Being a traditional painter as well I understand the difference between the 2 forms of media. I am in no way taking the "easy" way out by doing these on the computer. Some may actaully take longer to layout on the computer than to actually paint.

these are some quick examples of what they would probably end up looking like....

Re:: Question for art/design lovers

nsite. do what your heart pleases my friend. i also do design work and i will be printing my own work for my wife. she wants to hang them in the house. if you know what you are doing, you can make some really beautiful work. i think it is a different medium and it is here to stay. do not care what others think. you have been doing this for some time, you know what is right. go with it my friend and have fun.

Re:: Question for art/design lovers

Yes, computer rendered art is no less art than a painting. Computer is just another medium. And as you pointed out, computer does not make things always easier, if one does not have talent and ability computer wouldn't help.

As of the show, I guess, there should be people interested in it. Posters, does not matter by which means created, are really interesting pieces of art. I would not mind attending one poster exhibition. Some issue of Communication Arts, Jan. 2004 I think, had an article about Colorado International Invitational poster exhibition; and it really got me interested in posters, it's a pitty I did not attend it. I think, you definitely should consider bringing this project to life.

oh and i would buy in kind of art if I like it enough to want to have it(and coulf afford it :)). In fact, I do have few of my friends works printed on cloth and framed and hanged on the wall.

Few days ago I came across BlauGallery and it seems like there are quiet a few people printing out their digital creations.

Re:: Question for art/design lovers

I agree.. art is art. Is some knob sitting in a plexi glass box can be considered art.. nuff said.

Some of my mates and I are thinking of doing an art show in Tampa sometime in the future and also have a couple dj's too, playing some downtempo, experimental and what not. I thnk you should go for it :Bingo:

I'd buy a framed poster, definitley. I have been impressed by alot of what I have seen from you thus far.

I think this is along the same lines as people mixing vinyl or cd's. Mixing cd's isnt neccesarily taking the easy way out either, it gives you more freedom to do other stuff along with just mixing.

Re:: Question for art/design lovers

Yes, you're right...

Im a DTP operator in Hungary, so i think comp is a "complex pen". Actually it's more difficult to use, like its old brother...

Art q

Art is very subjective... if i say im an artist, i can call my poop an "art performance" :Naughty:

I don't look down on Computer Generated arts at all, as the person said above its just a medium. I have seen some truly amazing C.G Arts and if i had the money, i will purchase it. So, good luck showcasing your arts.

#234225Post 11 of 24

yes totally. computer arts. i have seen some of the most beautiful things in the world - digitally. i'm into art and i love all the mediums within my reach. i'm thankful that i have such a wide range of equipment at my disposal. the great thing is when you scan natural textures and mix it up with digital filters and effects. special 8)

Re:: Question for art/design lovers

Anything can be art. A picture of a dilapidated old alley way might be art. If you provoke other people and recieve any kind of response you are headed in the right direction. Positive or negative it is still envoking thought. Your masterpiece can be any medium whether it be a cursor or a paint brush. peace out & stay focused.

Re:: Question for art/design lovers

Yes, I would visit a show of graphic design related materials as long as the show had works I was interested in viewing/buying.

I've been to at least one show at the V&A in London that was all posters. Albeit they were all antique prints of shows like the infamous Dada shows in Paris in the late 1800's/1900's, as well as stuff like - the famous Chat Noir poster of the cat, et al.

They laid it out in a way that organized the works in sections like, propaganda, advertising, et. al. They had some interesting communist posters that the Russians made to spread the word, et. al.

I don't necessarily think that every piece works in a gallery, though. I don't think the gallery is an icon of having arrived, or made it to some point of positive progression in art, but it is a contextual framework for viewing and consuming artwork. Some works just don't work in that framework. But like I just said, it is the typical contextual framework for such viewing - thus, regardless of whether it "works" - art is typically meant to "work" in any context, or in a particular context specific to each artist.

Best of luck.

someone saying art has to be with a paint brush and not a computer is like someone telling me i'm not a musician because i create beats on a computer rather than banging on a drum with a wooden stick.

go for it.

and hell yes i'd buy some of that stuff.

i've even framed a few of my record sleeves. <Art.

#234278Post 18 of 24

I dabble in design a bit myself, and have had discussions with people over this same matter. I'm with palmer and dom, the computer is just a fancy brush. :) I've always said digital art is just as valueable as "real art," since there is no difference in my mind.

as for your show, I for one would jump at the chance to be able to attend such an event. so, +1 vote from me.

I have been browsing deviantart's prints section for some time now, looking for something to buy, and have found almost too many to choose from. :lol: (I would however like to see some more styles available on that site)

Really good job on the posters, too. I wouldn't mind owning one :wink:

Yes like someone said already it's just another medium.

Do you by anh chance have anything to do with Obey the Giant?

#234527Post 21 of 24

thanks for all the responses, I really appreciated.

Although I am flattered, all the above posters I posted are not mine, just along the lines of what I think like. They are shepard fairey (obey giant) & russian contructivist posters from alexander rodchenko & el lissitky.

As usual, I'll keep you all posted.

#234529Post 22 of 24

you better ...

Are you familiar with the artwork of Aidan Hughes? Based upon the stuff you posted, you might like it. Check it out:

I dig the design art stuff, definitely consider it "real" art, and would (and have) been to gallery showings of deisgn art.
