Hey guys...

DO YOU USE VERIZON DSL (or did you)?!

I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO ACCESS THIS WEBSITE FROM HOME, AND I THOUGHT YOU GUYS WENT BELLY-UP SINCE AUGUST 2ND, BUT NOW I AM VIEWING THIS FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE (WASH D.C.) AND IT IS SHOWING UP NO PROBLEM.

IT APPEARS THAT VERIZON DSL MAY HAVE CUT YOU GUYS OFF FROM THE PHILADELPHIA AREAS, AND THEY MIGHT DO IT NATION-WIDE!!!

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?! AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO???

-e- ARE YOU AWARE OF THIS FACT?! I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED, JUST TO FIND OUT THAT MAYBE VERIZON DSL IS BEHIND MY LIMITED [MS] EXPERIENCE THIS PAST WEEK!!!

Please share your thoughts, and my apologies for the all-caps post.

I've concluded it is Verizon DSL, because I use different computers with different OSes, and none can access the site.

Yet, i am in DC for the weekend, and using Cox Cable, and i can (obviously) connect.

VERY ODD
have you asked them about this?
Nope. I just discovered that [ms] hasn't been down like 1 hr ago! I'll certainly contact them when I'm home next... unfortunately, I'm in DC until Sunday, and i have to work in NYC until Thursday... so I won't have a chance to verify that all systems are go (should they change something) until next thursday.

Work sucks. I hope nothing's wrong... and if it's not them, then I think I just might cry.

#232994Post 9 of 34

#233001Post 10 of 34

i have comcast cable internet at home. i dont really have any problems with it, unless my roommate goes on slsk, that seems to make the connection go down.... but it goes back up when i unplug the modem for a minute, then plug it back in :? what was this topic about again :P

#233005Post 11 of 34

got comcast here.. havent had any issues

#233237Post 12 of 34

My GF had Verizon for a while. They had ping and traceroute disabled. They also were using PPPoE for a while then finally dropped that.

nasserd- you need to call and complain big time, hopefully they'll resolve the issue for you.

Re:: VERIZON DSL ARE REALLY EVIL PEOPLE

Comcast Cable sux major wang too! but that's what we're stuck w/ when they are give monopoly power!

#233299Post 15 of 34

tiddles- PPPoE is PPP over ethernet. It just makes thing annoying for the end user. It forces you to log in to be able to access the network unlike cable or standard DSL (which is actually PPPoA - over ATM) where its always on the network. With PPPoE everytime you log in you also get a different IP address where as with the others you hold your address unless you go off the network for 3 days. You also need their client software which with the others you don't.

If you haven't noticed the slight annoyances don't worry about it. If it does bother you I suggest using a linksys router as your PPPoE client (to keep you logged in). But I think Verizon is going away from this since its more troublesome to support.

I suspect you know what ping and traceroute are for but in case you don't, their basic but important troubleshooting tools. Ping just verifies you can reach a device and traceroute traces the path across a network to the device.

sorry been on verizion since it came out 6 years ago and I have never had a problem

as neoee said try pinging the site when you get home

#233569Post 17 of 34

@ Nasserd, sorry I just saw this, I have had atleast 2 other members complain about not being able to access the site, not sure whats been going on, could be traffic, could be that our ISP is being blocked by other ISP's or traffic to our ISP is being blocked by others. Unless DNS entries have been fuckered and dont get refreshed soon, you might continue to face problems. I'm sorry but I dont know what else to recommend.

i had problems with verizon long distance a couple years ago. my parents divorced, and they refused to reconnect service to our condo until my ex-father paid HIS bill. they told my mother NO ONE could get service at that address until the balance was cleared - such bullshit. they ARE evil!

Hi e, thanks for the info.

To all, thanks for the details. I reset my dsl modem + wireless router and all that... still doesn't work (got a new IP from DSL thing, renewed it... still no luck). I guess I'll be accessing only from work the next couple of days (as I am now, via VPN).

It appears -e- et al. are on to something. If Vzn misconfigured their DNS in spite of TimeWarner (of which MS is hosted through their lines; i can tell that much via tracerouting), then they are EVIL. If not, they are still evil and I hope to download some new tunes 'cuz Aug seems pretty, but I haven't dl'd a thing in 1 month!!!

Peace!

(Admins: pls feel free to lock this thread up; I doubt there's anything more to share.)

what is your speed with them? you can upgrade to 1.5 for like $15 more / month.

nassered- run nslookup and see what you get for MS. Also if you determine it is a DNS issue you can hardcode in other DNS servers as a work around (use an AT&T server or some such). I doubt this is a DNS issue by the very nature of DNS querys (I doubt verizon is the authority for the record) but it doesen't hurt to look into it.

Yeah, it's either Comcast Cable or SBC Yahoo DSL, both suck major time. Weird stuff happens on sbc dsl - i always have unstable connection on saturday evenings.

#233894Post 23 of 34

yeah, verizon dsl sucks.

i had that shit but it kept going out on me. so i switched to adelphia cable, which is better but those bastards cap my uploads.

you kids should spend a week on 56k ... i bet you would accept what you have.

#233994Post 25 of 34

I had verizon dsl for almost a year with no problems with it interfering with [ms]. Although, it might be a problem in specific parts of the country though.

I must say, I feel for anyone on dial up still :(

I have dsl at home and a T3 at the office. Pretty soon FTTH (fibre to the home) is going to start being designed and built. Now you're talking serious speed. the likes of 622Mbps fwd & 155Mbps return

I design broadband/rf and fibre optic networks for a living. This technology is in the works now. Some markets already have it such as areas of NYC, and it is being designed in Tampa. Its something that will take a while to get to every area due the cost of the actual design and building of the networks and of FCC regulations being sorted out. But it will change cable/phone/internet as we now know it. And Verizon are the ones pushing this.

There is also a company called Wild Blue Communications that is going in the satellite internet direction.

Okay, I'm back in business... the culprit?! The DSL modem's PPPoE connection had to be reset a couple of times.

Thx to all who've suggested shit. The people at Vzn Dsl cust serv were like "it's your fault" and i was like "shut the fuck up" and they said "okay" and i said "it works now"

See that PPPoE thing is bullshit. Honestly you should look into getting a Linksys router (if you already don't have one) and use the settings on it to maintain the PPPoE 'tunnel' (for lack of a better word). You'll likely never have a problem that way. Good to see your back though.

Re:: VERIZON DSL ARE REALLY EVIL PEOPLE

Be glad your not running Satelite modems, I?m on DirecWay and it sucks big time. Not even mentioning the cost or so called service from Guatemalas Red Tech (my provider) or from Hughes Network Services or DirecWay.

Still i usually get a 1MBPS connection in the middle of the Guate rainforest, so can?t really moan. Just a shame it?s up and down like a hoars draws.

good advice. my roommate and I have our pc's networked, and use a linksys hub/router. never have a problem.

Re:: VERIZON DSL ARE REALLY EVIL PEOPLE

yes. verizon is evil! here in NYC they hold you hostage if you are not their customer & you are trying to get a dsl line. they are the telco, so it has to go throught them. i have heard horror stories about friends waiting 3-4 months to get their dsl line up due to verizon not performing the necessary telco work.

just dropped roadrunner cable connection. it is fast, when it works. constantly going down. they are quick to send a tech to your home & waste your time performing same diagnostics repeatedly, but unwilling to investigate if there is a problem on their end. you can spend hours talking to their tech support after waiting forever to get through to them.

just got dedicated dsl line: 6MB/768K. www.speakeasy.net finally, a company that answers the phone without putting you on hold, & intelligent tech support. my experience getting this has been totally positive. not trying to sound like a commercial here, but just saying there is an answer to the uncaring monopolies...

^^^^ Yeah I've heard many good things about speakeasy, especially the speed.
