Exxon Chairman's $400 Million Parachute
April 14, 2006? Soaring gas prices are squeezing most Americans at the pump, but at least one man isn't complaining.

Last year, Exxon made the biggest profit of any company ever, $36 billion, and its retiring chairman appears to be reaping the benefits.

Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 million, including pension, stock options and other perks, such as a $1 million consulting deal, two years of home security, personal security, a car and driver, and use of a corporate jet for professional purposes.

Last November, when he was still chairman of Exxon, Raymond told Congress that gas prices were high because of global supply and demand.

"We're all in this together, everywhere in the world," he testified.

Raymond, however, was confronted with caustic complaints about his compensation.

"In 2004, Mr. Raymond, your bonus was over $3.6 million," Sen. Barbara Boxer said.

That was before new corporate documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that revealed Raymond's retirement deal and his $51.1 million paycheck in 2005. That's equivalent to $141,000 a day, nearly $6,000 an hour. It's almost more than five times what the CEO of Chevron made.

"I think it will spark a lot of outrage," said Sarah Anderson, a fellow in the global economy program at the Institute for Policy Studies, an independent think tank. "Clearly much of his high-level pay is due to the high price of gas."

Exxon defends Raymond's compensation, pointing out that during the 12 years he ran the company, Exxon became the largest oil company in the world and that the stock price went up 500 percent.

A company spokesman said the compensation package reflected "a very long and distinguished career."

Some Exxon shareholders are now trying to pass resolutions criticizing the company's executive pay policies. The company is urging other shareholders to vote against those resolutions.
Re: Gas Prices in your area

i just paid 3.02 for 93 octane at sunoco here in nassau county on long island. and to make it worse, my town made it illegal to pump your own gas so now we all pay full service prices.

my big vice is the fact that the supply demand market for oil is bullshit. if the refineries just refused to pay over an industry wide price cap the companies that drill would be forced to drop prices once they are sitting on a huge stock and no revenue to show.

For the same reason they build cars nowadays in such a fucked up manner that you need to take half the engine and front apart to change a bulb in your headlights: to suck more money out of the happy shopper. Welcome to the consumer society Karen, glad you could join us ;)

you cant pump gas in oregon either... not sure the reason for it... but at least it creates a few more minimum wage jobs. we also don't (that i know of) pay extra for the privelege of having our gas pumped for us :p

Re: Gas Prices in your area

Premium unleaded today was $3.15 a gallon. To my understanding, most of the refineries are here in Houston too. You would think the gas would be cheaper here, but I heard earlier in the week that Houston was slightly above the national average.

Re: Gas Prices in your area

$3.25 in SF. But we've been complaining about gas prices forever back when it was $1 on the east coast and $2 over here. As the rest of the country is catching up, now you all know what us Californians have been complaining about all along. But it's not bad compared to EU, although driving is not as critical over there as over here. Mass transit sucks in the bay area especially when you have a 50 mile commute.

Re: Gas Prices in your area

Ooh... so, you're all talking gallons. 1 gallon is 4 liters, isn't it? Then, here in The Netherlands it's $7,12/ gallon!!! So, stop complaining please, haha.

Re: Gas Prices in your area

I started carpooling cause of the prices. no choice since I rather see my finances go for more important things.

look it the average cost to fly some where. it is outrageous.

how many of you car pool? you will see a big difference in 1 month's time. thats at least 100 bucks saved.
