Since we have this issue with immigration such as benefits and what not, a good solution would be to require them to serve in our Armed Forces for no less than 2 yrs and after that time, they would be able to live here and have the rights to benefits. Any thoughts on this? :WTF:

Re: Opinion for the day - Solution for Immigration problem

hmm. did you come up with this solution on your own, or did you read it somewhere else? i see many problems within your solution. first off, lets start with the fear of terrorism that the news loves to shove down our throats. what happens in the odd ball case of an would be terrorist crossing the border to get into the usa. now this guy is part of military? secondly, the military already offers pentions and other forms of compensation for joining the force. would the immigrants be eligible for these forms of compensation as well, or just the rights associated with becoming a citizen? and what happens in the case of a discharge? sounds like a plan, but it would require a lot of planning and i see a lot of problems stemming out of it.

i see more of a solution coming out of the need for healthcare. if you need the hospital you are already there and filling out forms. might as well hand out a couple more forms having to do with becoming a citizen.

either way, its not fair to the immigrants who come over hear legally and have to waive the rights to things like social security so that they can never become a "drain on society".

Re: Opinion for the day - Solution for Immigration problem

definitely not fair to the ones who come here, get and education and learn to speak English. They are not a drain on our economy and can actually help it. I can't stand that all of these immigrants come here (I live near Miami) and don't even bother to learn English and expect the same rights as our citzens. It is funny seeing these people protest in the US but they never protested in their former country.

As for the military thing, it was just an idea. The military can benefit and educate so it would force individuals to learn to be an American. Like you mentioned, it would need a lot of planning.

Re: Opinion for the day - Solution for Immigration problem

if I recollect the interview correctly.... an Iraqi man who tagged along the US army as an interpretor back in the Gulf War of '91, came to the US, lived here, continued to serve in the army and went to English School to improve his communication skills, then went back to Iraq with the Army when Bush Jr. attacked and was the guy who was one of the two people from the US army who helped drag Saddam out of the hole in the ground ?

tell me what compensation are you going to give to those who truly deserve it ? Let's have an opinion on that ?

true, but some hospitals do care for illegal non-citizens, which soon they will need to turn them away. So my bad in mentioning all healthcare.

Don't worry, I wasn't attacking you with the ST remark, your post just reminded me of some slogans in that movie...

And as for the thread going sour, don't wanna be a smart ass, but you could've seen that coming from a mile away, no? You might want to post stuff like this in the Politics forum next time ;)

Why? The French have had such a system for ages: if you enlist in the Foreign Legion, you can obtain the French nationality after a certain time of doing service.

Old wine in new bags imo. Bush has rolled the dices and neither a new republican nor a democrat president can wipe the slate clean just like that. Minutemen to Bush: Build Fence or We Will Wednesday, April 19, 2006 10:46 PM EDT The Associated Press By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox has a message for President Bush: Build new security fencing along the border with Mexico or private citizens will. Simcox said Wednesday that he's sending an ultimatum to the president, through the media, of course ? "You can't get through to the president any other way" ? to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25. Or, Simcox said, by the Memorial Day weekend Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately. "We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise." Simcox said a half-dozen landowners along the Arizona-Mexico border have said they will allow fencing to be placed on their borderlands, and others in California, Texas and New Mexico have agreed to do so as well. "Certainly, as with everything else, we're only able to cover a small portion of the border," Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border. I suspect that's why we'll never get control of the border." But he said the plan is to put up secure fencing that truly will be an effective deterrent, and to show how easily it can be accomplished. Simcox gave this description of the envisioned barrier-and-fencing complex: Start with a 6-foot deep trench so a vehicle can't crash through; behind it, roll of concertina (coiled, razor-edged barbed wire), in front of a 15-foot high heavy-gauge steel mesh fence angled outward at the top. Behind the fence will be a 60- to 70-foot wide unpaved but graded dirt road, along with inexpensive, mounted video cameras that can be monitored from home computers. On the other side of the road will be a second, 15-foot fence, with more concertina wire on its outside. "It's a very simple, effective design based on feedback we've had from Border Patrol and the military," Simcox said. "It's a fence that can be built on the cheap, effective and secure." Simcox said supporters will try to build the fencing with volunteer labor. Surveyors and contractors have offered to help with the design and survey work, he said, and some have said they will provide heavy equipment. Simcox said those involved in the planning hope to keep costs to between $125 and $150 a foot. Access to land literally on the border is an issue because so much is state-leased trust property or federally owned, he said. "You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said. He said the Minuteman plan is "to keep turning up the heat" until President Bush has to respond somehow. ?????? My .02 cents. The french foregin legion is one of the best fighting forces in the world.

Would you make the women and children sign up too for the right to live in the US?

can't answer that one. I guess for the children it would be different but woman can fight.

If I was in their shoes, it would be better to joing the military and become a citizen than sneaking in and picking up tomatoes for $2 an hour. The scariest part is that the $2 an hour is still better than what they would get at home.

Re: Opinion for the day - Solution for Immigration problem

in a recent interview on TV, Bush himself said that on a visit to a farmers ranch in Texas, the Farmer couldn't find anyone to sow whatever it is you need to sow to grow potatoes because it was a back breaking job and natives of the area weren't willing to do it at the prevailing wage rate.

ANOTHER important point you HAVE to remember is that it is all a demand and supply situation. If AMERICAN businesses wouldn't hire the snot out of them in order to skimp on Medical / Dental / Retirement / Benefits / Bonuses / Pay Raises and whatever else they would need, in order to keep their costs low ....... illegal workers to the US would simply disappear. So its blessid ridiculous to blame them

Its the same useless unthought of ludicrous reason that every other jobless computer programmer in the US blames an Indian for stealing his job when the VERY AMERICAN company he applies for jobs to are the ones who aren't interested in the poor white programmer because they can get a POORER Indian programmer to do the same job in HALF the time without paying ANY bonus AND without any long term commitment.

Capitalism and complaining at its finest imo.

To all those who are looking beyond your boundaries in trying to find blame at other nations, look within your own boundaries on how to fix the problem.

You think if you started setting up 5 year JAIL sentences to ANY American business / family for hiring an illegal, there would be any illegals left in this country ? Think about it

well said Kamal.

valid point. but the problem for me is that as a tax payer I am sick of paying for their benefits. the companys that hire illegals should be responsible to pay for their benefits not the Amercian people. its the same old shit. it will always happen and there aint shit that any of us can do about it.

if you dont have a social security number, report to any city in alabama, texas, mississippi, arizona or california to be shot by a redneck.

read that as i think there is no solution unless we piss a lot of people off and follow the law letter by letter. enjoy the cheap labor and cheat on your taxes. its the only way to avoid paying for an illegal immigrants rape of the US social help system and get work done.

I didn't know you had a white American mule Geoff  (ass in Froggy is "cul")

Anywayz, nationality for me is a vague concept as far as fellow EU citizens are concerned. I might be a Belgian, but I considder myself a European above anything else...

@ Sean: dude, you're mixing up stuff. The scum that torched cars and looted stores during the riots in France were kids of immigrant workers, not (ex-)L?gionairs or their children. I know a guy who has served for years in the Legion and I gotta tell ya, if he'd do the pepsi challange with any US Marine I'm putting my money on him when it comes to patriotism and honor. The Foreign Legion has always been used as canon meat clearing the road for the regular army, so it aint no field trip...
