QFT

This compilation is awsome. Disk 2 is an absolute ripper.

Re: Renaissance presents Hern?n Catt?neo - Sequential __Tracklist

I have been listening to a lot of Herann from MS and I've been impressed, he is playing some quality progressive house music at the moment.

I'm looking forward to this release, but chuckc surely that's a bold statement 'could be the best CD ever?'

Best comp ever ? Better than the Northern Exposure's, or S & D's GU's - that's a big ask. As long as its as good as South America and the two Master's I'll be happy. The test of a comp is how much you play it in 5-10 years time. I've been hammering Norhern Exposure 2 lately : thats a 1997 release that still sounds fresh in 2006 !

Re: Renaissance presents Hern?n Catt?neo - Sequential __Tracklist

To me there is a difference between "fresh" and "still an enjoyable listen."

Most electronic based music sounds dated after a five years plus. This has been true since the early 70'dies.

Pink Floyd's "Meddle" still sounds "fresh" to me. The Northern Exposure series does not.

But I still find the Northern Exposure series "an enjoyable listen." Only now and then.

In which case sir you will be very happy indeed - Sequential is far superior to either of the Master's

Let me start out by saying that I?ve never been an Hernan fan.

The guy knows how to mix, no doubt, but I always thought the he "plays it safe" too much for my taste, his sets are usually easy (in the sense that he seldom surprises people, he hardly challenges the listener). Feel free to prove me wrong, I?m all years.

That said, I got my hand on this promo, so I listened to it with open mind and open ears. In another thread, someone said they liked the 1st CD better. Well, I though it was boring as hell. It?s probably HC?s attempt to show a funkier, groovier side, maybe it?s something he would play to warm up a crowd, but to me it doesn?t go anywhere, nothing especially memorable, nothing that could make me shake my ass or even nod my head.

Now CD2...wow...more uptempo, more banging, it?s the kind of thing that reminds me why I still love the old-school dark prog sound, amazing tracks, great pace and smooth-as-silk mixing...however...it still suffers from what I described in the beggining of this thread : it?s predictable and it?s crowd-pleasing.

But that?s not HC?s fault...it?s just me, I?m in a different mind set now, but I?m sure if I listened to a set like CD2 in a club, i?d go apeshit.

All in all, congrats to Hernan on a very good comp, if it was only CD2, it?d be the best prog comp in a long time. But, Best Comp Ever? No way.

Well said mate. Some great points there....i loved cd1 though. i love the chilled funkier stuff.

for you not being a fan of hernan whatsover, glad to hear that he turned you on a bit.

I said it "MIGHT" be the best comp ever. Leaving that open for discussion..I am a huge hernan and prog fan so for me this is one of the best comps i have heard in a long time as well. I just hope everyone who liked it will support the industry and go out and buy this masterpiece.

I can see why people think Hernan 'plays it safe'/ Been listening to a lot of his metrodance shows, and it does seem to be 7-8 tracsk in an hour, all 8 minutes lomg, mixed albeit quite smoothly. I wonder if he can mix it up at all i.e. quicker mixing, change of pace etc?

He probably can. I honestly believe a truly great DJ can mix in almost any style...track selection might be a different matter though. My friend Dusk could mix hard techno in one style (fast mixes, cutups, reverses and 3-deck mixing) and then do a melodic prog set in a totally different mixing style.

The thing is, for the style of music Cattaneo plays, there´s probably no point in doing fast mixes.

I dunno, there´s something missing from HC that I can´t quite put my finger on...:| .

Still, I think every prog house fan should give this a listen.

Re: Renaissance presents Hern?n Catt?neo - Sequential __Tracklist

I've been a fan of Hernan since I saw him live back in 2000 in Bogota with Sander Kleinemberg. Perhaps the best DJ sets I've heard live.

I've enjoyed all his compilations and many of his live sets floating on the web. Sequential is no exception. CD 1 grows slowly in the typical sexy/deep way Cattaneo is an expert at. Haven't had the time to listen to Disc 2 yet, but sounds promising too. Go for it if you have some nostalgia of the classic progressive sound (quite a contradiction I guess)

Re: Renaissance presents Hern?n Catt?neo - Sequential __Tracklist

Don't think that Hernan live is the same as Hernan on Metrodance. IMO, He seems to often use that show to bring out all the chill stuff purely geared towards listening. I saw him in Indianapolis last year and he came with the hard, driving stuff..threw in a lot of massive breaks too. CD2 on Sequential(which IMO is also the better of the two) is probably the closest to that. He definitely brought the goods. Granted, then Oakenfold took the decks and took all the goods away...but it was about time to leave at that point anyways :-)

Re: Renaissance presents Hern?n Catt?neo - Sequential __Tracklist

I picked this up 2 weeks ago and I have to say, what a let down this was. Complete snooze fest in my opinion. Whereas Masters 2 was memorable with some quality tunes, this was plod plod plod for me. About 3 decent tunes on the whole disc, this will be forgotten very quickly by me. Shame really as I had high hopes for this, plus his Metrodance shows have been really good. Bushwacka-Beastman is a particular low point, what a horrible tune this is.
