How many here record their own sets?

Ive noticed many grab sets from the Promo's & Recommendations and it's all filled with well known dj from around the world etc.

but who here actually mixes and tapes their own on DAT or PC?.

I know many of us are just music lovers and dont actually mix or have the equipment for it. Maybe there should be another section for board member sets or something.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I do every once in a while but I have not recorded a set in a long time. Usually I just play for the heck of it and don't record it. I look at it this way it to hard to get gig around where I live and I don't have time to travel to gig. So I just play for fun in my bedroom.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I record most of the time when we (THM) play out.. but not always is the recording worthy of being put out for the public.. we use an iRiver

Re: How many here record their own sets?

That's what I mean. I dont have any gigs or residencies. It's a fun hobby for me. I mix alot at home and like you said, every now and then I record something.

I would really like to listen to stuff from "regular joe" members here. See what each of our styles are and what not.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I record a lot of promos...well not a lot. I have recorded a few of my sets from my residency, but since I don't have an mp3 recorder, I use a minidisc to record everything with. So unfortunately I don't get an unbroken set to listen back to.

iriver mate.. worth the money :)

Re: How many here record their own sets?

well I'm looking to get one of those 1 gig or 512 meg Iriver recorders, I have a buddy who has a 512 and he can record a full 4 hour set on it. That's pretty cool to me. I just don't have an extra $90 to throw around right now.

#546282Post 8 of 48

Re: How many here record their own sets?

i do minidisc too... and jsut record from its output to my mic into wavelab... all my sets get on my compy that way, its great :)

Re: How many here record their own sets?

so then you understand how long it takes to put the stuff into the computer for editing. Oh how I hate waiting for that stuff to get done.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

yeah, it sucks timewise, but hey, better than nothing

if only their was a way to use the usb port to transfer.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

You got that right bro! Better than nothing.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I record straight into my PC using either SoundForge or Goldwave. No editing, just convert the .wav to .mp3 and delete the .wav. Thats it.

Difference between both programs for me is that Soundforge I dont have to set a time limit vs Goldwave; I need to give it a specific time length which sucks balls, i fall short or not enough time.

mixer/tables to receiver, receiver to pc, pc set to Dell jukebox. Jukebox to my car :D

Ditto.... Figure two shows a month for mercurysessions, one a quarter for xm and then the odd promo here and there.... throw it into soundforge and then master either with ozone or send it through the tc finalizer and wahlah.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I used to play out a lot in the 90's and early 2000, but Daytona went downhill after that and I don't feel like pushing myself to do gigs over in Orlando. For a little background have a look @ http://techlogic.20m.com/custom.html I also did a couple of sets on http://www.trancedomain.com/ Do a search on this page for zdanis - http://www.trancedomain.com/arch2000.htm I was going to post a few sets that I have done sometime soon, but just hadn't had any time. Also been sitting on a lot of Chris Fortier mix tapes from the early 90's that I have been trying to clean up and post for everyone. I still play and collect vinyl, but not as much as I used to.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

lugging a pc around to gigs sucks.. the iriver goes in your pocket.. and holds 20 gigs.. the H120 does at least :)

#546371Post 17 of 48

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I have about 8 demos on cassette tape and about 6 demos on cd.. If I'm playing out at a gig, I do what I can to record it...(I need an iRiver).. But when I record at home, I usually take the time to find the right tracks, right programing and putting some good time into it before I record it...I use acid foundry on my comp. to record

Re: How many here record their own sets?

having just got my iRiver h320... i fucking love it. used it on new years eve and got a good 5 hours worth. (i had to ditch the recording tho cos the cdj's were fucked) the whole thing sounded great. sound quality is just what you need.

as far as recording my shows, i use a PC and sound forge. works like a charm everytime.

#546442Post 20 of 48

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I use my iRiver iFP-395 (it actually stays in my pocket at all times). Though I don't use it much to record when im playing somewhere mostly because the club I've been mainly playing at has a shitty mixer and the wiring is a mess. Not sure I want to fuck with it. At home I use an external soundcard hooked to my mixer and record with Totalrecorder Pro. I need to record more but I'm such a perfectionist I'm never happy with it so it always gets scrapped.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

I mix, record, burn to CDs, make nice CD covers and give it as presents to my close friends :) I am using Traktor DJ Studio by the way 8)

Re: How many here record their own sets?

#546498Post 23 of 48

Re: How many here record their own sets?

i record promo cd's every so often and sent them to various clubs, and have been for a couple of years. it finally started paying of at the end of last year, i played my first gig out to a nearly empty bar, a month or so after i was headlining a night at one of the best underground nights in northern ireland, then about a month later i was warming up for nick warren in the best club in the country, the legendary Lush.

anyways here a link to the latest cd, i normally don't post them in the promo section as nobody downloads mixes form people they don't know:lol:

Re: How many here record their own sets?

Hey all i just posted a theard on how to record on pc not long a ago. can anyone recommend a good sound card that's not too expensive?? u c i just bought a new laptop not long ago but because i am so carp with computers i started recording through the mic and everyone on here said do it through the line in. i have another hole in the front but it's for s/pdif. whatever that means. does anyone know how to check what sound card i might have and how to get the line in installed on my laptop (that is if i have a sound card in there). i have this program called realtek. anyone else have this program and know how to install my line in??

#546508Post 25 of 48

Re: How many here record their own sets?

who makes the computer and which model is it? realtec is the soundcard and driver. spdif is your digital audio in/out. is there only one input? is it a coax i/o or optical i/o? (coax = rca like plug). what are you trying to hook to the computer? a mixer? an iriver?.... millions of different things going on here mate....

I?ll probably do that in a few weeks.

I finally got my home Internet connection back this Christmas, so I?ve been buying stuff at BeatPort to put together a mix, along with some older stuff. I use Ableton Live, so no problems with recording the set.

lol, I did that too! But too much time to make cd covers and printing and all that. Now there just long mp3 sets.

I would also like to upload sets and stick them here, but like one member said, people dont bother if they dont know u or u aint famous.

I need a new mixer. The one I have is plain, bought it like in '93, gemini. lol

Should be under 100 bucks. I bought a refurb. one off ebay from 70(?). I always had a problem with line buzz when using internal cards so I went for an external unit. Its capable of 24bit with 48Khz sampling rate (96Khz for playback). On your laptop you probably just have the output and the mic input. Your fine using the mic for an input as long you adjust the levels to make sure they are not too hot. S/pdif is a digital format, your not going to be able to use that for recording.

Here's more info on that sound card: http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/11/14/usb_2/

If you are able to spend a bit more then I would go for this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ECHO-INDIGO-I-O-THE-INDIGO-w-INPUT-FREE-USA-SHIP_W0QQitemZ8752625181QQcategoryZ3710QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Its also 24bit, says 96Khz sampling rate (I imagine for output like the audigy). But this one is for your pcmcia slot and also has 8 virtual outputs. I imagine this could be really good when working with any multi track app (think ableton).

Hope that helps.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

me and mate spin in a little pub where we live and every set gets recorded it helps your mixing you listen to them and if you know you can do certain mixes better them we try to:)

Re: How many here record their own sets?

Believe me ther ARE people out here that listen to newer dj's mixes. Look at me. I get somewhere around the number of a hundred people that download my sets. They never get in touch, but I can tell from my server that, that many people do download my sets. Plus it's helped me to get on a couple internet radio programs. So keep plugging away, it's one of the only ways a dj can help to get known these days.

#549478Post 33 of 48

Re: How many here record their own sets?

There use to be a DJ/ Producer section on this board... I guess they did away with it because it wasn't too popular.. I also tried posting a few mixes on here a while back, but everytime I would get like 10 views so I dont even bother anymore. People grab mixes from the names they know because they dont want to waste their time... myself included. Why download a mix from DJ unknown when I can get one from Desyn where I know its good. My point is there are a ton of DJs on here.... and if there was a member's sets section, I doubt it would do too well except for a few DJs who have built their reputation on this board or who posts so much that people know their name.

^^^ I would be happy with 10 looks... of course I would be happy if I actualy had a mix to post!!

Re: How many here record their own sets?

i dont have my own decks, so i rarely record anything. and i dont have anything to record with when i play out. i have recorded a few demos but since i dont have decks it's really hard to get my friend's so let me spin for an hour straight without allowing any one else a chance to drop a track. that being said, of the promos i have recorded every one has one mix that i am not pleased with, and i cant redo it, therefore, i dont post them online. i'll only post a promo that is flawless technically in my eyes. hopefully in the future i will get some CDJ's of my own so i can record things a lot more..

Re: How many here record their own sets?

Well don't just hit up this board, there are plenty of people on the bedrock board too. Along with soo many other music forums out there. Keep pushing along!

I'm sure you know who Danny Howells, Villo, and Chris Fortier are right? Well I have heard mixes from all three of them and more that are "Professional Dj's" and they tend to fuck up just as others with not as much experience do. It's all about being human. If your mix is too perfect it won't have the same feel as if there is a little glitch in one or two spots.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

i agree with you completely, i guess i'm just self conscious about it! i guess i should get over it because i;'m sure i have a few fuck ups in my live sets as well. i just want one mix that is technically sound over-all.

Re: How many here record their own sets?

would anyone want in the Promo section a sub-section where us members can post our own mixes freely to download..and it would be only for such?

I only ask because I and others who post them now get bumped out pretty quckly because of the (overall) large amounts that get posted in there nowadays...

That does sound like a good idea. I know what you mean about those guys who post sets online all the time of this and that dj. And those of us who are trying to get OUR mixes heard get bumped down to the second page in a matter of hours.
