thought CD1 was impressive; not as great as duckwater drive or GTDJ001 but a really enjoyable ride. glad to see he's eased up just a bit on the compulsive need to scratch over the top of every second of every track.

CD2 was a bit of a disappointment IMO - never really felt the payoff.

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

i loved disc 2, :D . disc 1 was also cool but 2 was more to my specific taste. I prefer james' cd's to his live sets because he puts a lot more thought into programming and less emphasis on the scratching. After all i'm gonna buy it for the tunes!

james zabiela ... ALIVE

no words to discribe it. he left me with my mouth open :HolyShit:

zabiela

has anyone listen this ?

Bought my copy of Juno last week and listened to it on the drive down to Chicago before catching him live... Si Begg- Gangsta is def hot shit... Love the in-depth explanation of the mixing... CD easily is one of the best this year.....

loved both discs :RightOn:

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

Incredible, simply incredible. Now I know exactly what 3 CDJ1000's and a mixer can do. Can you believe it??? His mash-up of Rob Mello and Underworld's Dark & Long was done live!! I love the concept of this album. Inside the liner notes, James gives a summary of every trick, edit, loop, and FX he uses. James held back on the scratching this time around, too much on Sound In Motion and not enough on Alive. Tracks were once again only ok as a whole. The ones that did stand out kick ass though!!

I'm not very surprised!

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

Very good + refreshing, CD1 is the better of the two IMO (first 6 tracks are just brilliant!).

#231427Post 9 of 32

in one word - faultless

much more energetic than sound in motion and brilliantly mixed

#231436Post 10 of 32

I've only listened to disc1 so far and pretty much enjoyed it, will give cd2 a listen tonight.

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

I don't like Zabiela's music, because he play very heavy for me... :Scared:

#231548Post 14 of 32

definately a great comp :)

#231603Post 15 of 32

I wonder how many takes it took him to mix those cd's flawless, one beat out, start again:x:x:x

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

cd's of big dj names (involver) sound very poor if you compaire it with "alive"...even more as you know that sasha worked 3 months in the studio on it

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

"Alive" is definitiv one of the best comp I?ve heared this year. Is 100000 times better than this poor & kitschy "Involver".

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

ALiVE is the CD of the year (only Way Out West might top this for me). Incredible programming, track selection, mixing, and (of course!) scratching! Also loved the sleeve notes...

On the downside, Zabiela does depress me. I was thinking of getting the Pioneer CDJ-1000's, but after listening to ALiVE - what's the point?! I'll never even come close to JZ.

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

It is definetly nice to not hear JZ go crazy with the scratching like he used to have a tendency to do.

Overall a quality mix IMO!!!

#239791Post 20 of 32

I'm not that impressed with Alive, actually. Mixing and experimentation is great, but most of the tracks don't blow me away. I was hoping for more.

Nothing compares to his "4" mix. That's way better than Alive.

#239804Post 21 of 32

Bloody brilliant - all of it. though I will say that its one of the few comps I own that i'd say I prefer CD2 to CD1.

Practice makes perfect. You'll never be as good as Zabiela if you don't practice. And his daddy taught him almost everything he knows, so what's the fun in that?

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

Hi!

Glad most of you are enjoying my CD :) Ace :)

Darin.... For the 'record' my Dad could never mix... he only owned one turntable but just really liked techno and has about three thousand records.

...so I didn't learn from him... A local DJ called Gary Bennetton showed me what mixing 2 records was all about so I practised in the record shop I worked in... much to the annoyance of the customers and the shop owner.

thanks...

Jz :)

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

i enjoy the way both cds start off, but they tend to lose me halfway through, i tried many times to listen again but i can't get into it

#240413Post 25 of 32

saw him on ibiza at pasha with sasha, def.a wizzard on the decks!

Re:: Thoughts on Zabiela - Alive?

Very much enjoyed both discs but must say I prefer disc 1 over 2...anyhow...Have seen JZ a couple of times in L.A. ...really great show. keep up the good work.

#240840Post 27 of 32

Overall it is pretty good. I like disc one more than disc 2. Disc 2 seems to not go any. The mixing is good but the trakc selection is dull. Disc one overall is great. Good breaks with some dark elements thrown in there for good taste.

#241032Post 28 of 32

Got a chance to listen to disk 1 today. At the beginning I didn't really like it but as the cd progressed and the sounds became 'fuller' I really started to enjoy it. Great build. Now to find time for disk 2.

I was there too. Great show from zabiela, Sasha played too loud.

PAcha sucks and space is the place !!!

I better buy a copy of this. He was great in SF last month. Hell, he's always amazing everywhere I see him - especially WMC.

#242166Post 31 of 32
