Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

does sasha still res @ crobar, or anywhere in nyc? does he strictly use the maven everywhere or does he sometimes still mix vinyl/cds at certain spots WITHOUT the maven?

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

Does anyone else think we analyse this stuff too much???

FFS - when I'm in a club i'm dancing if the music is good, or I'm finding a different room if it isn't - I don't go to clubs where I know I wont like the music. Tunes are tunes no matter what bloody genre they are in! Personally i think all the Tiefschwarz electro stuff is utter garbage, doesnt inspire me at all, but I also think their mix of 'electromagnetic' is very good.

If I ever had the chance to play a 10 hour set you can bet your bottom dollar it would incorporate every style of house music out there!

In answer to the sasha bashing - I've only heard one set of his using ableton - that was his EM which I thought was stellar - can you honestly tell me that jori hulkonnen-lo fiction isnt a tune?Have you heard the original of it - if not listen to it and you will see what sasha did to it with ableton.

In answer to who is good at the moment I would say check out:

Luke Morrison

Olli S

Spesh

I have been very impressed with these guys recent sets.

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

i actually think it's quite an exciting time for "progressive". a lot more styles are being incorporated, and if zabiela's ableton mix is anything to go by, bring on more ableton! there's so much potential there.

just because the djs you've listened to in the past aren't playing exactly the same style of music doesn't mean others aren't.

and who can honestly say that they themselves have stuck rigidly listening to the same style of music for years? i think that's boring, personally.

#537233Post 46 of 79

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

i agree that ableton is a very good tool, however like some people talk about being "inspired" from the music, well seeing ANY dj live w/ ableton just doesn't inspire me. however for a compiliation or sometihng to that effect, yes, your right, jamez zebiela's mix to habershams kissmix are prime examples of its potential.

i also think andres post leads to something else, it's probobly more of the producers we should be analyzing here instead of the dj's. i think it's safe to say that it seems as if the newer 'electro' sound is where the majority of the producers are concentrating on for the time being. thats probobly more of the reason why the music changed because a lot of influential producers came along doing new things with new sounds and translated well to a broad audience, people like fancuilli, and tiefschwarz, etc.
i actually think it's quite an exciting time for "progressive". a lot more styles are being incorporated,
I cringe every time I hear this. These "different styles" are variations on house being combined with other variations on house. And the variations don't sound remarkably different from each other in the first place.

We're at that point where nothing new is coming out of progressive. Let me rephrase... nothing new with dancefloor appeal is coming out of progressive It's all a rehash of old ideas and sounds with just enough modern twist to make it appealing.

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

Analysing or not ... it's just a bit frustrating to hear again and again the same sh*t you don't like ...while it used to be different, when every set was another trip. That's what I miss the most: the journey that some sets could take you on. Maybe you can call me a dreamer or a wooshie :), but that's what I still like the most about music: the feeling that some music produces. But with the these-day rather flat sounding electro stuff, I can't really talk about 'feelings' anymore.

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

Personally I think the majority of Big Name djs have really gone in the wrong direction with there music. I mean every big time DJ (howells, diggers, pappa, sasha, sander, ect ect ect) play sounds today that do not sound nearly as good as they did a few years back.....its rare that i hear a bigger name dj set that i like from beginning to end.

I find myself getting more satisfaction listening to newer and upcoming unknown djs...like ollis, mirel jarca, steve james, derek howell, gerrard ect. rather than the big time guys... You really have to look harder to find the music you like anymore...

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

Guys, do me a favour, go to BeatPort.com and listen to Sertac Kaya´s mix of Snake Sedrick´s "Only One Way", and then Izak and Phunindustries "Retake" (Izak´s a member here).

Come back and tell me if prog is dead.

I think a lot of people are just looking in all the wrong places. I agree on one thing...the relationship between quality and quantity has probably changed, but there´s still a lot of amazing stuff out there.

Having said that, it took me sometime but I definitely like the tech-house, electro-house stuff...all I want is quality electronic music, limiting myself is pointless and stupid.

So, in the same breath, I´d probably advise anyone to check out anything by Locodice, Trentemoller, Zoo Brasil, etc., or even Apparat.

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

Ok well i was struck as well when i went for some time away from the music and came back to find ppl praising fanciulli and find about new ppl like m.a.n.d.y and tiga ...Didnt appreciate that music and thought it was trash ..i was starting to lose trust in diggerz thinkin he's crap now where is my dark diggerz ?? He is still there ... really after listening to some trentemoller sets along with the diggerz sets i strated too understand this music .. It's not bland like most ppl think on the contrary what Fanciulli plays is not what diggerz plays ..Digweed is still dark but in another way , in a sounding way rather than relying on precussions and beats only and loops to deliver darkness , darkness is delivered using different tools now .. u might not like it and ur free in that but u can't say digweed has turned electro !!!! the biggest proof is digweeds set at dubai in 2005 ... i belive any one of us , if he plays the same kinda music for 3 years he would need to experiment new sounds , digweed maintained the darkness which is what i think digweed is about and why everyone here is his fan ...

Yep, it's still dead.

The Sertac Kaya mix sounds like a rip off of Subsky. The Izak track is decent, but not my cup of tea. But they do both sound like they came straight out of 2003 if you enjoyed that period in prog.

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

I can relate to all of the opinions made here. I was away from the music for almost 4 years with my recent return I have found what was the Prog House I was used to in years past has most definatly gone through what one would call a PROGRESSION which is why it is called such music. As for the reason we are all such fans of the grates like Digweed its not for the style of the tracks they play today or tomorow it is for the skill in wich they present the music to us. Its the mood thats represented. Yeh, I've been frustrated recently surching for music that I want to represent. Sometimes I like playing more to the Break side of the spectrum and then sometimes to the Electrotek. Whatever the brand, how you dish it out is what really makes it PROGRESSIVE HOUSE!

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?
yeah i love Sasha

i have to say that of all the times i've seen Sasha, the best set i ever heard was at Fabric last July, what he did with Ableton was simply amazing, Sasha's only low point was circa 2000-2002 imo, since hes been using Ableton he's just been on fire, but horses for courses and all that... ;)
i'm in the same boat seen him 5 times last year....nyc, orlando, la, and vegas and everytime he impressed me more and more with the hole ableton set up.....we all know sasha is on and off with mixing vinyl and cd

i think it fits him perfectly to me it doesen't matter what the dj uses.....as long as there putting out great music....i could care less

hey gloomy what's up? long time no seen.:!: I've been away for a while too. And i totally know what you're saying. I hear songs mixed together, and less a journey than the old sound did. But i find the music picking up a bit tho recently. if you look past the old names and search a little.

To me Martin Garcia has really taken off with his dj sets....I have a few of his metro sets from NOvember and one from December and they are wonderful....this guy is full of talent and he never seems to play those annoying electoey type sounds.

On fuckin point bro.. I enjoy the new and up coming djs more than i do the big jocks anymore. Look at steve lawler lights 3.. few years back this guy was playing amazing tribal.. i mean thats what we all know him for right.. lastest cd, no fuckin tribal.. IMO: instead of sittting around and bitching about it.. its time to do something about it and make it change.

Could not agree more. Both djs had big yrs last yr. What about Jonathan Lisle, his orginal series 002 was one of my favorite cds from last yr.

i enjoyed his sets more from a few years ago...

I gotta agree...He came out with that 5 or 6 hour mix...and id hate to say it but i really didnt enjoy it at all....

he was on another level and so unique wen i first heard him....wish he would get back the original style again. he barley plays the killer breakbeat stuff anymore.

Any good dj can make you like any style. The end.

#537871Post 68 of 79

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

Progressive is the state of mind DJ.

Its not a good label for a genre. Calling a genre "Progressive" makes very little sense to me. However, labeling a DJ Progressive makes sense.

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?
progressive rocks. love the new sounds and tastes. this is such a good movement and always has been. taking elements from different genres and splicing them together. good stuff. can not wait for more in 2006.
This sums it up nicely. Prog is the melting pot of house music.

Also I'd like to add that this is a changing of the guard with the DJs. Many of the established names are spinning off onto tangents as they have exhuasted their interest in the traditional prog sound, while the up and comers have taken the batton a continued where Diggers, Sander, et al have left off.

Hi Immadic, how ya doin? I'll try to pass along here more than I've been doing last year. And maybe going out in the scene again, because I believe I did only 2 prog parties last year

In the meanwhile, I'll take up my producing work again as well, both my dark electro band, and my own prog project.

Hey, thanks Kinetic. I?m not really sure if that's progressive and well... I have to admit that it is not that easy to decide where should I put the tracks on the stores. In fact I guess that's the only moment when I use these definitions.

I really don't have an intention to do progressive, tech, acid or electro. I just do what my inspiration takes me too and if I get goose bumps, or if I can't stop moving my head... then that's good.

there's been discussions on weather prog is dead or not, we'll i will leave that alone but i will tell you what IS dead - and that's tribal. rightfully so.

is it the djs....or the producers that changed direction? the dj's are just playing the cd-rs that they get in the mail.

unrelated rant: a lot of people seem to feel qualified to tell everyone else how everything non prog sucks. well, considering these people have NEVER ventured outside of the ever shrinking prog scene. would you guys take someone seriously who only listened to oakenfold, or avb? no, you would laugh and tell them they didn't know shit because they only participated in a tiny part of the music spectrum. well...wtf is the difference? because you just started listening to hernan metrodance sets last year all of a sudden makes you Mr. Allknowingelectronicmusicperson. when you hear the word progressive, narrowminded isn't the first word that comes to mind...so why is that the mindset of the scene?

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?
Progressive music has been with us for the whole time over the last years and it is still there. As Greg said, you "just" have to get away from DJ's you listened to before and look who is playing what you like best at the moment. There are so many awesome DJ's out who haven't stopped or started playing Progressive..you only have to dig a bit for them instead of listening to the 20th Digweed set where you wonder why he plays so much Electro instead of Progressive.
I must agree with you man! There are a lot of new and old djs/producers who are still spinning and producing progressive. (Dj Tarkan, Snake Sedrick, Dj Gurdag, RPO, J&S Project, G-Pal, V-Sag,........)

I've been away for a while as well and i do need to find some new music so i'm gonna go with some of the recomendations here and see if i like some of the newer stuff.

So is slsk still good for getting some decent tunes/mixes etc ?

Re: Progressive going in a new direction?

I'm on a prog board, but i'll play clubby shit prog and techno when i feel like it. Fuck labels, they should only be guidelines, not defenitions in the narrowst sense of the word.
