New York cops fine DJ for DJing 19/07/2004

A Brooklyn bar DJ became the latest casualty in Mayor Bloomberg's escalating war on clubs last month when cops issued him with a ticket for 'Operation of Sound Reproductive Device Without a Permit' (Village Voice).

Jeremy Rodriguez was reportedly busted inside Williamsburg bar Cash Checking after police heard some of his music on the sidewalk (pavement- English Ed.) suggesting DJs as well as bars and clubs are now liable to be fined under the city's increasingly tough entertainment laws.

"Just when you thought New York nightlife couldn't get any worse it does," Village Voice club columnist Trish Romano complained.

"Rodriguez, who just moved back to the States after six years in Barcelona, is probably wondering why in the hell he ever returned," she suggested.

The incident occurred days after Bloomberg announced new regulations outlawing excessive bass vibrations, with cops authorised to issue swingeing fines for noise violations based on their own judgement rather than noise meters (US$3,000 for second offences).

However, in better news for Manhattan clubland, the influential New York Nightlife Association are suggesting that they've succeeded in stalling the puritanical Mayor's 1am curfew plans (at least temporarily) in a recent posting on their website.

"While we can all breathe a sigh of relief that a 1 AM Nightlife License will not be imposed on us this year, this is not the time to let our guard down," they warn.

"In fact, it is quite possible, even likely, that the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) will revisit the issue again in the near future."

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

fortunately shitberg will be looking for a new job soon enough - no way he gets another term. and while i sympathize with people who are kept up at night from bass vibes, here's a thought: don't live above a bar :?

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

not sure if this be of any concern to them which i'm sure it's not, but a sound vibration can be powerful in it's own right.....considering new york is a very packed city, you have to wonder if the continuous low frequency vibrations are actually affecting the structure of the buildings.

#224641Post 13 of 26

ok, i am extremely excited about the no smoking laws. but c'mon, sound violation tickets for clubs...that means they'd have to soundproof in order not to get ticketed.

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

That really stinks of rotten cheese to hear that. Come on... clubbing is an essential component of nightlife & to try to get rid of it... and where of all places... the BIG APPLE... disappointing news.

#224690Post 15 of 26

really bad news. what is this mayor doing? at first he seemed like a nice guy, but this is outrageous! :? I guess he goes to bed around 9 pm so he doesn't want any noice in the city after that time ...

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

interesting to see so many canadians chiming in on this topic. my girlfriend was in toronto for work a little while ago and said she couldn't get any sleep b/c there was a party f-ing rocking right next to her hotel - the only bad thing about it was that she couldn't enjoy it. we're def going up there for a wkend soon though, the nyc scene has gone down the tubes big time thanks to mayor dickberg. go canada :Bingo: did i just say that?

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

Well, lets' just hope that rich fucker doesn't make a second term in office. It seems as if he's trying to take away the heart and essence of what NYC really is.

Thats seriously fucked up. How can you fine someone for doing their job? In all seriousness I have no idea what they're trying to prove here, aren't bars and clubs there for people to go and have fun, relax and dance?

pathetic :FuckOff:

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

If you live in NYC and are eligible to vote and care about these issues, then PLEASE get yourself registered and make sure you VOTE!!!!! Actually that goes for anyone anywhere.

You can complain until you're blue in the face that things suck here because of Gloomberg but unless you had a hand in trying to NOT elect him (yes, I voted for Green) then, imo, you need to STFU.

Here's the link w/ directions on how to register to vote in NYC. Please note that you can download the form and mail it in.

Re:: NYC cop fines DJ for playing

Waaay to many jobs and revenue would be lost if they shut down at 1:00AM. Would never happen. For example, think of all the resaurants and diners that would lose out from all the partiers grabbing a bite to eat late night. Too many businesses would get affected. $$$$$ is everything.
