This is really amazing. Thousands of gallans of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel alight. A black cloud turning day into night for half of London 25 miles away. Initial blast heard in Paris and Holland (!!!), and NO-ONE dead. The fire crews are just starting to try to put the mother out - Good luck men.

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

I saw it yesterday on the news, really amazing that no-one got killed. Pretty fucked up for the peeps who live there, the residu of an oil fire can be sooooooooooooo dirty.....i guess the whole place will be covered with it.

Looks like a job for Red Adair and his crew ;)

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

A friend of mine lives about half a mile away... he woke at 6am when the windows came in on him. By 9.30am him and his housemates had finished a bottle of whiskey to 'settle their nerves' before they were evacuated. 8)

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

It's not as bad as it looks believe me - I work 1 mile away from it and it's more surreal than anything. Granted, I wouldnt have wanted to be about when the blast went off but people are acting quite normally considering. There are loads of press about, and obviously sightseers trying to get a glimpse.

The actual site is a spectacle in itself, 200 foot high flames. I wasn't sure if I could get to work today (have to drive past it) but the roads were quite clear - all schools in Hemel were off today - although I did just leave early as the news said they were halting the fire crews as they believe one more tank might go up.

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

yeah that pic is pretty eerie, the light here in Berkshire was really dull yesterday, has been fairly clear here all day.

it didnt wake me up, but my flatmate heard a bang and thought we were being broken into!

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

Fire chiefs suspect industrial accident, and no evidence points to arson or terrorism.. yet!

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

i heard industrial accident. good thing it was on a weekend, when nobody was there working. imagine if it had been midweek and full of people.

Yeah, but were you up and about at 6.02 am? They say that the reason the bang was heard so far away is the same as why the cloud is travelling the way it is. A layer of warm air high up is keeping the cold air at ground level or there abouts. It creates a layer through which air cannot pass (or something like that). So instead of just going up into the upper atmosphere the smoke particles travel along the bottom of the thermal boundary with the breeze - and because sound is transmitted by air, so do the sound waves.

Anyway, the beeb were showing footage of a live broadcast from Central London from that time yesterday morning and the reporter heard it and commented it. That is around about 25 miles away.

Re: Oil Blaze at Hemel Hempstead

Police have today confirmed that George Best was not in fact buried in Belfast last week and that in retrospect the decision to cremate him in Hemel Hemstead on Sunday morning might have been a mistake.

Not in the best of taste - but pretty funny!

They think that a driver may have caused it accidently when cutting his engine near a leak.
