[rant]The conflict between the Christian, non-Christian, and non-religious people in this country has reached absurd levels.

Here's the deal: to the non-Christians and non-religious people: when someone wishes you a Merry Christmas, it is an expression of goodwill, not an affront to your religious beliefs. They may not know whether you celebrate Christmas at all. It doesn't matter. FFS, it is a federal holiday and you get the day off of work whether you celebrate Christmas or not -- you don't have to do anything Christian on that day, just enjoy the day. This whole idea that you can't wish someone a Merry Christmas because you might offend them is utterly ridiculous.

As ridiculous as that is, however, it's absurdity is easily eclipsed by the Christians that maintain that they are [B]entitled[/B] to receive a "Merry Christmas" everywhere they go, or being [B]offended[/B] because someone wishes them "Happy Holidays." Here's the deal: when someone wishes you Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah (sp?), Happy Holidays, whatever, it is a friendly expression which means, in a broad sense, "enjoy this time of year where we all exchange gifts for whatever reason, go to parties, and generally engage in merriment." Take it as such. No one is entitled to a holiday greeting of any sort. If you get one, enjoy it.

BTW, this rant was sparked, in part, by the religious right's uproar over the fact that the White House Christmas card says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" -- just as virtually every card since the Ford administration. They are also pissed because the Bible verse contained in the card is from the Old Testament, not the New Testament.

C'mon folks, you should be happy you're getting a card that contains a Bible verse at all! Unreal...:roll:

I embrace this season. There is so much going on, and I love to share the goodwill of all people, cultures, and religion. Frankly many around this time pep up and celebrate something, either the coming of the New Year, or the lighting of the candles, or even the birth of Christ. I am honor'd to celebrate all and I will. The whole sense of this time it to be greatful and thankful for what you have, most of all, family, and good friends. There is nothing wrong with thanking the ones you love, and perhaps even showing it in a box with a ribbon.

thank you. I think some people do not see the big picture and focus more on the words, and not the meaning behind the words. This world is so caught in being correct, when being correct is not always the right thing to do. Respect play a huge role, and the seems to diminish with this PC bull shit.

Some chap says Happy Hanukkah to me, I turn around and wish him a Merry Christmas.

in order to not offend 20 people, they piss off 20000 by stepping on toes. i went to the post offce last week for christmas stamps for our cards. i was asked ""religious or non?" right after i asked for CHRISTMAS STAMPS. i said religious. someone next to me stared at me like i proposed to a 10 yr old for sex. they asked for non reliogious. instead of being offended, just enjoy your own shit.

I actually think that is a fair question. Just because I'm looking for "Christmas" stamps doesn't necessary mean that I want stamps that have a nativity scene, biblical imagery or "Happy Birthday Jesus" on them. I would consider a stamp that had Santa Claus on it to be a Christmas stamp, too, but Santa doesn't have anything to do with the religious component of Christmas. The "Christmas" cards I plan to send out this year couldn't be less religious. They're still Christmas cards, though.

Whichever side you fall on with this debate, I think we can all agree that it is really fucking annoying. But ultimatly I think it is symptom of a deeper problem that does not go away on Dec. 26. Religious issues, tolerance and intolerance all seem to be more in the open these days than in recent memory.

We're on the brink of a religious world war, imo. But I will still have to get up and go to work tomorrow morning, so:not me: Till then, Merry everything, happy all that shit too.

The post office thing brings up something that i just don't get..

how often do you open a letter and before opening say..."oh wow, what a nice stamp!!"

When the clerk asks me what kind of stamps i want, i just want something that'll get my letter from A to B, poop on it if that works, i don't care. I've been behind people in the line at the post office when they've got "the stamp catalog" out and they're searching for the perfect stamp. sigh. I wish i had a Pitney Bowes machine at home and i'd rid myself of stamps all together.

And speaking of stamps, they just went up again, to 39 cents. Is it harder to deliver mail these days? You would think with technology, the mail system would be more efficient, and stamps would decrease.

I think it is kinda the opposite. Technology has improved, so people use the mail less. They've got to make up that revenue somehow to make those economies of scale work.

That's my guess, anyway.

back in the day, there were not many options other than the USPS. Today, with fedex (which rules btw), ups, etc etc...the USPS isn't the only option. Profits are down, stamps are up. imo.

A-f'n-men! Why do they even bother printing more than one stamp?

When I lived with my parents the mailman would be too lazy to walk up the driveway to knock on the door so I always got the orange slips to pick up my package at the PO. Yet the UPS guy would jump over the brick wall to deliver the package. So I'd end up at the PO waiting in line for 20 minutes like twice a week behind aforementioned types. If I had a choice I would never use the Postal Service, or Fed-ex for that matter. UPS just leaves the packages at my door, no signature required. Last month they even left my new laptop sitting at the door, which I paid $2200 for.

Luckily the house I bought has one of those community based mailboxes where they can stuff packages in the bottom and leave the key in your box, so no more waiting in PO line bullshit.

I'm glad the Christians fought to get Christmas back. We wouldn't have this fight if it weren't for people putting pressure on stores to start renaming Christmas trees to Holiday trees. This fight wasn't started by Chrisitans, but the left wing God haters. They'll continue with their crap to remove God completely out of the country.

Christmas is an official national holiday meant for most Americans to show good will towards each other and spend quality time with family. It's started off as a religious holiday, but is enjoyed by many who aren't Christians. A small minority shouldn't rule over the much larger majority who want something.
