where we headed boys n girls? Digital is takin over, so what's a dj to do now? Stick to the roots and preserve the life of edm's ancestry or go corporate with our technology and spread the use of new age technology so we have dj's looking at an lcd monitor while playing?

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

i guess this issue has already been discussed....i'm so not up with the times.

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

your with the times it is going to be digital

1 everybody is going to follow sasha since he is only going to play cds now

  1. sasha's little side kick james with his cute little scratch box since everybody loves that shit that is the only way he can play his into to his next track to is to make a bunch of noise before he drops it

:ChatterB: :Tongue:

but then again with vinyl there is ony certain tones you can hit with that media

yeah, sadly it's seems like the furure will be digital. i don't mind if some people play some cd's in their sets, but to play out with a laptop... i don't know.:evil:

vinyl for life :RockOn:

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

i dunno, i guess i'm jealous of cd users......for me, it takes the fun out of something someone else doesn't have....at least when it wasn't totally digital, you could bask within your collection knowing that you just grabbed a copy of something that may not be reprinted...unfortunately, that's not the case anymore and now everyone has access and the sounds are just becoming too similar.

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

Is it easier to mix with cdr's? Or do you still have to beat match and cue it the same you would do with vinyl?

Plus surely using vinyl is a better way of preserving a HOT promo, i.e less likely to get ripped on p2p software!

I don't understand how you can be sad about it. The future is looking bright, really bright. Imagine the possibilities with all of this new technology... it's all about the music :) :)

Well, let me give you an example. My friend recently started only spinning CD's; however the fcuker only downloads tracks from soul seek... You ask him ? wow what?s the name of that track?? He's got no clue about the name, the producer, the label, and so on. You can't do that with vinyl, you know how hard it was to track down something, or if you are one of a select few that own that precious record. All of that will be lost forever, in the name of progress. I don?t mind spinning CD?s I just think that something special will be lost forever.

What you use cdrs, mixer and laptop all together or does the laptop replace the mixer?

#223268Post 13 of 27

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

Of course you still use a mixer....and if you don't want to lose the vinyl feeling, you should take a look at final scratch which is an interesting system. I prefer takin' my laptop with me and being able to play EVERY track out of my collection instead of making a selection before going out. On the other hand i understand what has been said before. It's pretty weak if people just to spin and therefor download every fuckin' track off slsk without even knowing whose copyrights they ignore. I personally see my tracks valueable....no matter if they are vinyl or mp3 (which i convert from vinyl for this purpose). For me just the playing device has been replaced...nothing else.

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

It will be a sad day when you see only computers being used to mix, but I have hopes that it will never occur. Vinyl just has so much to be said for it the weight of a record, the feel of actually touching the music you cue, the sound that can never be replicated by anything digital. I have no problem with using other methods in conjunction with vinyl but I feel that vinyl is the only true method for any DJ. Seems to me, in my limited experience, that virtually anyone can mix with a decent set of cd-players. Too much of the new equipment coming out attempts to take a large portion of the skill out of mixing. These skills are the building blocks of a good set and no machine can ever replicate the human ear or hand, a machine may be perfect in what it does but it can't operate on 'feel' of what would improve the sound, this takes development through practice. To not progress and begin to take advantage of other options out there would just hinder the music but to bypass vinyl or quit playing it all together..that borders on blasphemy.

#223327Post 15 of 27

I will probably stick with vinyl for now.When i first bought decks it was with the intention of actually using them 24/7,getting gigs,having one eye on a career etc, but then i realised that it was only ever going to be a hobby to me.At the moment I cant see myself splashing out money on a technology that i dont understand,if i have no intention of going anywhere with it.Although it gives you more options,like someone ssaid previously the feel and sound of vinyl is pretty special.Digital will take the 'trainspotting' feel out of dance music i feel.

That is why you should stick with vinyl....cant get that off slsk for free can you.

I am sure there are tons of punks out there stealing music off of slsk and playing it on there cdr mixers....Total BULLSHIT

Vinyl sounds better anyways. Fuck Digital

#223390Post 17 of 27

Vinyl if I have money.

Digitial for a listen.

But I would nevAr spin digital.

#223404Post 18 of 27

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

I think so many want to be in the fast groove of technology, and others want to be a DJ without putting any money into the business. mp3's are easier and cheaper to get, obviously. So personally, I don't have as much RESPECT for those guys - like SASHA - who want to use only CDs. Also, think about the lost art of mixing with vinyl. Definitely a different job, and harder to do well I might add. If everyone is a DJ, it will undermind those who truly have talent and have INVESTED into their profession. :Rolling:

#223414Post 19 of 27

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

I see the advantages and diadvantages to both, however in the future i think DJ?s that play vinyl will have more of a following than those who don?t. The purists will form cult followings to people that spin vinyl.

I think that even I could spin a decent set using a lappy and some CDR?s even though i?m no DJ.

Re:: Digital or Vinyl?

vinyl all the way.

though i can see the benfits of digital in terms of turnover, distribution, promo-ing and test runs.

but i cant use cd decks for toffee, and cant afford to buy the bastards to learn

#223427Post 21 of 27

why not both? why not all?

if i could only get certain tracks on DAT tapes... i would incorporate a DAT machine into my setup along with TT's and CDJ's (if the tracks were good enough obviously)

it's all about the music...

#223430Post 22 of 27

one advantage i think of using both vinyl and cd's is the fact that you can do some "remixing" on the fly sort of thing. But people that just use laptops, a la BT, fuck off and learn how to mix. I really dont have a problem with Sasha only using digital, because of course he has the credibilty, and has given so much to music over the past decade or so. Also as he said in that interview in LA that was posted on here [ms]. With the internet as it is, being so easy to get tracks on p2p, or order from all over the world, when the warm up dj is playing alot of the tracks that you were going to, it gets a bit frustrating.

#223436Post 23 of 27

digitalllllll, with a hint of vinyl. i love me some digital computer generated machine fucking

#223627Post 24 of 27

still love records, but i am liking final scratch more and more every day...

Once you get used to the cd player it becomes alot easyier. I personally like vinyl more.. but cds are great for hard to find tracks and using it as a sampler if thats all you have to work with.

the key is balance.!

#224317Post 27 of 27

yes vinyl but, don't forget that digital allows you to improve and do some effects and stuff.
