he can't dj and yet continously tries to. he clears floors and yet goes out the next night and gets behind the decks again. he's a WANKER.

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

i really love unkle and all lavelles stuff, he has put out 2 superb Unkle albums, runs a great record label, put out one of the best GU's ever, and one with some dodgy mixing granted.

he is a party dj, he plays alot of stuff at different tempos meaning that he can't beatmatch it all

And to people you say that he should'nt even bother trying to dj, the man gets offered massive amounts of money to dj all over the world, what would you do? He has rocked every dance floor that i have ever seem him play too, the only ones leaving the floor are the trainspotters, and wanna be's that are complaining that all his tracks are'nt beatmatched perfectly becuase he is playing a wide variety of stuff.

Sometimes people just need to chill out and have a good time

haha, touche! It would seem that for some, negative criticism is only acceptable when it is their own.

if we applied this to life, we would never be able to speak about anyone else. politics, music, money, clothing, opinion.

i love UNKLE cd's but you do have to give DJ shadow some credit. Barcelona was a change for GU but it wasn't a bad compilation. seen him live and had no complaints. i wouldn't say there is a stigma there?

LOL. I am just repeating the exact same comments Day4night said to me when he called me out yesterday because of my negative criticism to osamu change in musical tastes.....

Funny how he thinks its kool to rip djs but seemes to say its not ok for me....seems like a hyprocrite to me...

funny things is alot of my comments are very positive. i just speek from my heart when it comes to music.

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

I think as with a lot of the top dj's, they are good enough producers to get booked all over.. some of them, as with Lavelle (so i have heard, i have never seen him live nor have i heard a mix) are not good dj's at all.. but get over on their production skills.

at least Lavell with UNKLE has put out some food tracks.. i'd rather him get booked than tommy the tool lee and the rest of the non dj's out there getting gigs.

my .02

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

I was wondering this as well. Doesn't Lavelle have a residency at Fabric?

agreed....actually i have a few Unkle mixes..the tai mix specifically that is really quite good...not sure why everyone hates lavells so much...i mean i know he sux as a dj cuz i saw him play at wmc this year but seems like he decent with unkle and also his production work is decent.

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

there is a guy at work who has the same name as JL

Correct me if I am wrong but when you go out to see a EDM DJ, arent you expecting a smooth transition of some sort between tracks and at least some decent mixing?

If you wanted to hear a good variety of songs then go to a top 40 club and drink Smirnoff Ice with all the other slaves to the corporate fodder

#512508Post 17 of 32

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

I think it's just a combo of poor dj skills and poor track selection. I've never been to a gig, but I can't remember hearing a decent review of one of his show's. All I hear is that he's played In A State or Psiko garden again and agin.

Look at romania - hardly any devolution from the unkle/meat katie sound. It just smacks of laziness IMO.

Think a lot of people just can't see how lavelle gets big gigs, clears floors, when there are gifted dj's like lisle and masiello who still arent household names yet

#512678Post 18 of 32

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

when it comes to UNKLE. I really don't think lavelle has a whole lot to do with it. I think it's primarily Dj Shadow's project.

I've only listened to the barcelona cd's and didn't really care for it too much.

If you don't like him so much then why do you keep bringing it up. Do something about it and go out and dj and produce your fucking head off, and then maybe people will start talking about you.

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...
haha, touche! It would seem that for some, negative criticism is only acceptable when it is their own.
that's pretty far from the truth. he was making a criticism about the style of music played (which is personal preference and is totally subjective). i was talking about lavelle's mixing skills...something entirely objective. i didnt say anything about the style of music he played...cause he is a great producer.

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

Subjective as in: he's not entitled to his opinion? Who made the rule that we can't dislike a DJ's selection?

If Diggers plays all Top 40 in his next show, I will shit on it, maybe you will like it. It might be technically brilliant Top 40, but I happen to not care for the style. So what exactly is the difference, mate? Selection and mixing are the 2 main ingredients that make up a set, and either is grounds for criticism. At least Chuck was polite and complementary towards Osamu, meanwhile you have lit up 2 DJs in the past week, totally ripping them to shreds.

As far as I'm concerned you are BOTH entitled to an opinion, regardless if it concerns the mixing, the selection, or even personality (e.g. primadonna). And when either of you have an opinion, I hope you come on here and express it, good or bad.

no no...you can not like a dj's selection, but if you can tell the person put some effort into it, and its mixed well, then whats the point of bashing their selection? its not your cup of tea...move on. I dont like dn'b...you dont hear me bashing dn'b djs cause of what they played. they like it, if they put effort into it, then i respect them no matter how i feel about what they play.

However, both of my gripes with the respective dj's were based on things that a dj (or anyone in general) should be...GOOD at their job and humble/polite. lavelle has a problem with the former, morillo the later.

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

Haven't heard him live but I've heard a couple of live sets and his GU albums. I agree that he just likes to spin different types of music that makes it hard to beatmatch them.

I'm a huge fan of UNKLE so I guess I don't care if he can't put together a couple of tracks.

i have seen him live and he sucks ass, no mixing skills i mean he really sucks, and he played in a state twice that night, i dont know why he gets booked, IMO shadow is the one behind UNKLE...

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

I gotta admit, his first GU was good, the second was trash. Also saw him live a couple times here, shit. The last time he came around here the promoter needed my A&H mixer for the show, put me on the list and I still didn't go. Also saw him during WMC opening up for S&D, as did many others here. Totally killed the vibe that Zabs and Catteneo created. Everyone started booing him. The look on Digweed's face said it alone. He must have been thinking, "who booked this clown?".

Re: Someone explain the stigma associated w/ james lavelle...

Well I've seen him recently. At Avalon. went to see James Holden and JL opened up. The beginning was alright. Not my type of music but I stayed on the dancefloor moving and groovin, having fun with my friends.

After a while though, the music started to get to me. Mixing began to get worse and so did the tracks, then he ended his set with some trance shite! Myself and others were just standing starring at him while of course others were still dancing with they're arms in the air.

In regards to music type vs mixing skills, well.....

I dont like DnB. I went to see Oakey (reminder this is AGES ago) and some dnb guy opened up for him. This guy kicked ass, mixing was spot on and really damn good. Needlsess to say, I ended up buying a cd from this guy and still pop it in once in a while. His name was rock raider or something like that.
