Re: miketpoto lost his thread.

I found something interesting that totally brings up so many questions:
from the Insider's Recipes Master Edition

on page 3 it says Applebee's French Onion Soup 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 6 medium white onions, sliced 8 cups good quality beef broth 1 cup water 2 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 5 hamburger buns 10 slices provolone cheese 10 teaspoons shredded parmesan cheese

but then we go on to page 33 and we find out Preheat the oven to 325F. Cream together the shortening and sugar with an electric mixer. Add the egg, salt, and peanut butter and beat until well blended.

note that it says specifically BEAT UNTIL WELL BLENDED

On page 60 there is a shocking revelation

York Peppermint Patties 1 (14−ounce) can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT evaporated milk) 1 tablespoon peppermint extract green or red food coloring, optional 6 cups confectioners' sugar Additional confectioners' sugar 1 16 oz. bag semi−sweet chocolate chips but if we go back to page 29 we remember that the special secret sauce has been revealed unto us already.....

BIG MAC SAUCE: 1/4 cup Miracle Whip 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons french salad dressing 1/2 tablespoon sweet relish 2 teaspooons dill pickle relish 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon dried, minced onion 1 teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon ketchup 1/8 teaspoon salt Mix together and allow to flavors to blend for about an hour before using.
Now what does anyone have to say knowing what you now know?

Re: god vs. god MMV

Good point mike . I'm sure in another book . It was cheddar cheese and not provolone cheese . Do you have in ure possession the true book or is this one that has been distorted and missinterpreted by mortals

Re: god vs. god MMV

vbmenu_register("postmenu_224274", true); Finally this topic is getting interesting (the food talk)!

I'm with Yao on this one. Everyone needs to stop quoting their religious text(s) and speak in our current language. Even a little Ebonics would be fine (im sure Bubblez The Ghetto Queen might even like that).

Cowardly, we spoke in depth on religion on the old forum without quoting the Bible (the time traveler thread). Who is to say the Bible is more correct than the Quran, the Bhagwat Gita, the Guru Granth or any other religious text? All religions also seem to have the same theme in common. Someone, somehow, in an isolated place communicates with God and puts it in a formal text. Apostles, Gurus or some other form of messenger comes down for whatever reason but we are told that after number whatever no more messengers will be sent. And these books all end the same way too. There will be massive world events that will hint at the end of time, etc.

If everyone just quotes their book, than nothings been done to show me how you see things or why you believe what you do.

I did consider myself an aethist for the longest time but sometime last year I saw this tv show that completely changed my mind. The guy presenting it showed me his perspective without quoting religious books. For me (and I believe others) thats what I'd like to see in this thread.

noee I am working on that

try this thread for a small start... not much but I just threw that together on a moments notice

I have tons of stuff, papers I have accumulated from massive research over the last few years and I am typing up something in word to paste here about the mathematical probability of the earth accidentally coming to be with life sustaining capabilities. The number is quite amazing.

That is just the probability of the planet being able to support life. I have tons of other stuff about the probability of life being an accidnet as well.

It is just taking me some time to type up as I have been working on my tracks a bit latetly

I go in phases... I spend days or weeks on writing music then I go to researching things and reading books I have quite the ADD moments around here

When you think about the world, galaxy, the universe you get the point...have you ever thought that possibly there may be something out there that is bigger than you (a human)? Atheists like to be their own God so that they feel in charge of their lives. When you really think about it, its not out of the realm of possibility that something bigger than you like a "god" designed this whole thing and is out there.

Do we (humans) have the capacity to grasp it fully? Not at all, but that does not mean its impossible or cannot exist. Atheists want to think they are the boss of their lives. :group hu:

we have no control.

no one has any control.

its just a damn spinning planet and we are hanging on trying to get by.

God or not, we all need something to believe in whether its ourselves, or someone else.

Its just a game of survival at the end of the day.

you do what u have to.

the word "control" does not exist in nature. control is a human based concept derived from trying to acquire power and maintain it. in my eyes, there is only one being that has power of control and at his/her will, but yet we have been given the choice of free will.

#855738Post 304 of 349

Re: god vs. god MMV

interesting point. maybe not control then, but to systemise, rationalise and try to understand/function.

why we are here? what we are meant to do? how we are meant to do it? how are are meant to be?

we all search for answers. just have different ways and places to look for them.

u could open up a whole debate on the nature of nuture, the human system, the need for order, society, etc, etc.

i,m athiest but u say i like to be my own god ? i dont like to be my own god as u said, i was brought up as a catholic and my experiences from a very young were that i was being force fed views that didnt seem relevant for me and also being forced to do things i didnt really want to do i.s. things like choir practice and stuff like that, to me all religeons are about control and i draw that from my own experiences, of course there is something bigger than us and i would say its another lifeform of some kind or even the vastness of space but i wouldnt say that somewhere out there there is a heavenly being watching our every move blah b lah blah for me when u die u die and the only place u goto is a coffin then the ground, ur spirit ( lmao @ spirit ) doesnt suddenly decide to leave the body and seek out the heavenly place or whatever, people have a right to believe in what they want to believe imo so i,m not anti "follower" or whatever imo u have to respect other peoples views etc

Re: god vs. god MMV

here is the thing about faith that some people fail to realize. faith is a mere choice, you choose to believe. It is not for everyone, I have had things happen in my life that I can not logically explain and those actions have brought me closer to my faith. it was not because I was raised, but because one day I had something happen to me, and since I have decided I will carry that to my grave.

yea dom i can understand that totally but my "faith" was forced apon me from a young age and i just didnt wanna be part of something i didnt want to do, i have made my choice in the exact same way u have made ur choice, its each to there own m8

#855761Post 309 of 349

Re: god vs. god MMV

i agree red1. It is your choice and I respect that fully. I have a huge issue with faith stating someone will go to hell for not believing. It is as if they are stating the words of God as they were God. herm. It is not my duty nor obligation to judge, it is my Lords.

#855764Post 310 of 349

Re: god vs. god MMV

dom i judge people as i find them as a person it doesnt matter what u believe in or whatever, if i get on with someone then i get on with someone and thats it basically, my best fried is a serious follower goes to chapel every sunday and @ easter/christmas etc etc, when someone tries to force feed u there views ( and i,m not just talking about religeon here ) there will always be someone who dissagrees with that view, i take it as just part of life

Re: god vs. god MMV

exactly, mho is that it is good for some people and it is bad for others, tbh i,ve seen people turn there life around by turning to there bfaith and thats all cool in my eyes, but what i dont agree with is the church indoctering young kids from an age where they are easily manipulated into believing things when they are to young to know the difference between right and wrong, this is exactly what happened in my case

Re: god vs. god MMV

Faith, schmaith. Things happen that you can't explain so you just throw your hands in the air and give credit to some guy that people wrote about post-mortum? If there's something that I can't explain, and it intrigues me that much, then I actively seek to find the answer.

#856038Post 315 of 349

Re: god vs. god MMV

^^^ But what if you can't find the answer?

Ah, atheism...what a grand delusion! You atheists like to think you're free from that "crutch" of faith. And yet you're not very different in your inability to answer some very basic things...

(...such as why we and everything around us has come to exist; do we have free will, how is free will even possible in a purely science based world; what is the "meaning" or nature of our feelings - i.e., can you even have love and happiness in a purely science based world, and if so what does it mean...)

...and so you just basically say to yourselves "even if I personally can't explain it, it's all there...in the Scientific Method....somewhere..."

And even if you really believe that pure science says all there is to say about age-old human phenomena such as, say, "love"...most of you don't live your lives in accordance with the consequences of such a conclusion.

Are you sensing the irony here? ;)

Through the very process that leads them to believe that they have opened their eyes and separated themselves from the blind faith followers, atheists end up demonstrating that they are just as much "bound" by a faith as everyone else.

#856043Post 316 of 349

Re: god vs. god MMV
most of you don't live your lives in accordance with the consequences of such a conclusion.
Have you lost your mind? Are you saying that because I'm an atheist that I live a life that's full of evil and wrong-doing? I beg to differ. At least I'm not out killing legitimate doctors because my "faith" tells me that what they practice is wrong therefore they deserve to die. I'm also not out strapping C4 to my chest and walking through crowded markets, trains, and nightclubs because my "faith" tells me that I'll enjoy 30 some-odd virgins upon my ascension to the heavens. And last time I checked I wasn't declaring land as my possession to which I had no rightful ownership. I also don't go about my day telling people how they should live their life because what they may do may clash with my "faith" and what a man in a suit and tie tells me to believe on Saturday or Sunday.

Now, explain to me what these "very basic things" are of which you speak. And what's your basis? Are they "very basic" to you? Your religion? Your god? Lest we not forget that you're an atheist as well. Do you believe in the polytheism of the Greeks or the Romans? No? Ok, then you're an atheist by their standards.

And you're right, I know that answers to all questions are found in science somewhere. Everything has an explanation; there are some things that we have yet to discover the answer to though.

Let me ask you about your god. Have you seen him/her/it? Will you ever? If and when you do will you be able to prove it? No, I didn't think so. You waste your time and precious resources believing in something that no one will ever be able to prove actually exists. Why?

And what's the matter with thinking that? I do control every facet of my day, from the time I wake up to whether I drink coffee to what I watch on t.v. at night. To say that someone has written/planned out that on Thursday May 3, 2007 at 8:45pm I would be sitting on a red chair in the family room of my home in Orlando, Florida watching 'The Office' on NBC in high definition no less and that I would pause the DVR at precisely 8:46pm in order to get a glass of unsweetened iced tea and use 1 packet of Publix brand artificial sweetener is beyond absurd.

If so, how do you know you have free will?

I have free will to type this message right now. I have free will to hit the submit button. Now if you want to dive in a little deeper and explain the processes by which those things occur once I make the conscious decision to act then we can discuss science. There was a recent, very large, study published on the brain and why we do the things we do. It deals with how many impulses our brain has to wade through at any given nanosecond and why some impulses succeed and others don't. You should check it out; it's definitely worth the time to read. Or you could not read it I guess and say that you didn't because your god planned for you not to, your choice I guess.

And what's all this talk about free will anyway? Who really cares? Why not just live? Why not just be happy to be on this planet? Why waste your time trying to give credit to someone or something that you will probably never come to realize?

It's interesting and not just a bit ironic that your confident assessment that you have free will basically seems to amount to....a belief :D

So about the science...all things I've read on science ultimately come down to a deterministic paradigm of: 1. cause and effect, or 2. random result generation/probability. It may be excruciatingly complex, but it ultimately boils down to some combination of those two points. So, if by "free will" you mean that your actions involved in typing that message and hitting the send button were determined by a whole complex system of other factors...or else your behavior is the result of some sort of a process that systematically generates random results, then I accept your conclusion as being fully consistent with what science has to offer. I just wonder how "free" you really, though ;)

Free will is important to talk about because it is an absolutely critical component in assessing the human condition - which is key in any theism/atheism debate. It's fine to just live life and be happy, as you say (although I'm not sure what significance "happy" has to you, given that it is just a very complex set of biochemical and neural processes that are either determined or randomly generated) and not question the contradiction between what you believe and what science can explain for you...but then at least recognize the fact that you're living your life very much behind the veil of belief and faith like everyone else.
