......ok i'm a little confused.

i rented 'Kingdom of Heaven' and as i begin to watch it, i notice they have an add after you hit play that warns you not to pirate movie.. and went on to flash things about not downloading movies cos its illegal for all ages.

my question is.. if these movie companies have megamatrillionz of $dollars$ cant they just shut down the dvdr industry?

they try to deter us from downloading movies, but then there's an add in the paper for dvdr's on sale at some store, somewhere, usa.

its a catch 22 really. they tell you they will fine you up $250,000.00 for duplicating this film. a bit steep no?

thoughts

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

dvdrs are not just for copying movies jibby, even backing up large mounds of data from hard drives....

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

That's like asking why the music industry doesn't put a stop to personal audio players or CDRs. The reason the movie industry didn't go after DVDRs goes back to the late 70s/early 80s and their failed attempt at eliminating VCRs.

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

i still am not even sure if its possible to make an exact duplicate of a dvd anyway. i've never tried it but from what i've heard you lose 5.1 sound, some picture quality, as well as menu titles/extra features. but maybe it's changed.

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

^^ you dont lose anything other than the quality of the sound and video due to compression if its on a single layered DVD, you dont lose squat on dual layered

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

funny thing is, i have had some dvds that i will try to rip and it wont work anyway... im sure there is a way around it, but i cant be arsed to look for it, so if they really dont want it ripped, there should be some form of protection...

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

buy law. you are allowed to make 1 copy of all digital data. that includes dvds, cds, etc.

aka backup.

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

i'm well aware that dvdr's can be used for data backup. just seems retarded that on one hand they sell you dvdr's and on the other they sue you for copying films.

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

it's kinda like the "tobacco" water bong thing. as long you state tobacco, it is legal. once the term bong is used by itself, it becomes paraphernalia. i know what you mean. everyone knows you ain't smoking tobacco out that thing. i have never one watched someone take a pull of a six footer with Samson Blue. o America. the sweet red, white and blue.

Re: why do they make dvdr's if......

First thing: If you copy a dvd the sound-quality never decreases. It will be copied 1:1. The movie-quality, however, might be compressed. I?ve got a projector and didn?t ever see one digital compression-artefact, even if the movie was compressed up to 40% ( 60% left of the original).

Second thing: If anyone wants to make a backup of his OWN dvds, then try this: http://www.dvdshrink.org/ It?s the easiest backup-program EVER. Best option there is to "re-author" the backup. You can copy only the main-movie (saves space when the silly menues/trailers can be left outside) and select the audio-language-streams. User-restrictions (such as "don?t copy-trailers") will be removed as well as region-codes. A pictured "how-to-do-thinggy" is linked from above website. The program works best together with NERO, dvd-shrink has no burn-option built in. But it ripps the dvd so it can be burnt with any dvd-burning-software.

Third thing: The only dvd?s I know that have a new copy-protection are from SONY. dvd-shrink can not copy them.

Hope that helps,

Cheers8)

I?m sorry, sir, but the easiest process is shrink with installed nero... burns immediately after ripping... must not press one additional key.... ;)

Personally I don?t wanna have the f***ing menus on my copy. Sometimes they are awfully programmed (lanuage-selection, etc) plus it would save space to ignore them... Further I would want to select the audio-sections (languages) to save space too... (So it cannot be THAT simple, can it?;) ) :?:

But thanks for the info anyway!

Picklemonkey: You?re right, nero needs a license. But here in Germany nero is delivered with almost every dvd-burner for free...
