I personally can't stand this form of EDM...what a lack of feeling...I feel like I time warped back to the 80's...so in an effort to understand it, what is it about electro that has everyone jumping on the bandwagon? Why has it blown up so much? I'd like someone to explain to me why so many people like it. Please help me understand...I just don't get it, or feel it, or like it, or agree with it...I know music progresses, but this is actually a regression back to simplicity, non-complexity, and out and out bad music...Not to be sarcastic or anything, but I would rather listen to AM talk radio than this...please help me see the light so I can understand it better...:(

I blame it on Felix Da Housecat

Re: So what's with all the electro?

I personally think it's skahound's fault. it all started getting electro-ish when he got enganged to his wife... before that we never had to deal with this electro bullshit.

Re: So what's with all the electro?

electro is a lot different than it was in the 80's. the purists wouldn't even call what you're talking about electro. and i'm not that big of a fan of the old style electro, some of the new stuff has progressed far beyond what electro used to be.

Re: So what's with all the electro?

I think simplicity may be part of the appeal, but also the tripped out sounds that remind me a lot of the old acid house synths. After all it is all audio frequencies and certain ones have certain reactions on people. Furthermore, what could be called collectively tech electro house music is not all Alter Ego and Tiefschwarz(sp?) it has turned a lot of my friends on the more Zabiela like minimal tech as heard on some his 4 part comp. Dancefloor freaks love cracked out sound when they are on their meds... so to speak. Just wait, minimal tech stuff like Martinez and Joel Mull will only get more popular as top shelf DJ's work them into their sets. The distance seperating Autechre(sp?) and Mandy vs Booka Shade is getting smaller everyday but that why there is also Alican/Sonar Cattaneo and VSag to balance things out. 8)

Electro is the reason why I never post in most boards. I have nothing nice to say, so I don't want to sound like a bitter old man.

8 billion other topics on the same subject. Before you go throwing the term 'electro' around, why don't you do your research to find out what 'electro' really is. Then come back and we'll have a discussion. Although, I don't think there will be anything to discuss anymore.

Re: So what's with all the electro?

Personally it is getting harder and harder to find a dj that plays a complete set of quality track after quality track...of any genre. A set will sound good then it ususally will taper off....Or there will be a good track and then a bad track.

Seems like the production has taken a step back the last year year and a half.....there still good tracks but many more poor tracks than quality tracks.

Re: So what's with all the electro?

i agree ska.. sometimes i feel people hear a certain electro type sound in a bassline and think, oh no this is electro... wrong. one of my mates plays "electro" and believe me it isnt what a lot people think is electro. Digweed does NOT play electro

Re: So what's with all the electro?
Digweed does NOT play electro
what does digweed play now? It sure isnt the same style as what i remember him playing for most of his career.

Re: So what's with all the electro?

that may be true.. but if you have ever heard a true electro set.. you would see what we mean

check this link http://www.musicv2.com/artist/androidequation and have a listen.. there are some electro mixes on there

Re: So what's with all the electro?

if we could actually see this fabled 'electro,' I'm convinced it would look as annoying and gay as this:

Re: So what's with all the electro?

i like it to be honest.. but it is definitely a lot different than what some people seem to think it is. and i have to be in the mood for it, just like jungle and d&b

#496633Post 19 of 70

Re: So what's with all the electro?

I couldn't get myself into the mood for electro... it "feels" very disconnected, you'd have to be really fucked to be able to get into it.... there's nothing like the chugging of a nice bassline to get you into the mood no matter what mood you're in..... almost naturally makes me smile

Although, I don't think there will be anything to discuss anymore.
ska and unome are 100% right. sooooo many people on this board call everything non prog electro. stop it. you make yourselves look quite ignorant. do some research like he said, i don't have the energry to explain the differences for the 5th time.

why has it taken off? because people like fancuilli, jz, eric prydz, sebastion and ignosso have all jumped to the forefront, and have become very trend setting at the moment. deep dish and digweed started dabbling in it at the end of 2004, and lawler incorportated his own version and has been using that for awhile. everything in this scene comes from ibiza, if it works there, you will see/hear it everywhere else. all these dj's play the "electro" sound, but very few if any play the same records. it's not that way with prog, the top prog jocks play a lot of the same records, thats not news to anyone.

the reason why i got into was it's something new, something different. i got so flippen tired of prog and stangant state it's in, i needed something fresh. minimal tech and "electro" feature a lot of innovative artists doing a lot of cool stuff. a lot of it lending itself quite nicely to big rooms. i also (like any techno head should) love the acid lines. but too much acid can be a bad thing, a lot of these tracks feature acid lines, but use them properly and not excessively. thats what i like.

it took me a little while to get into it, but now - imho, the best producers are on this trip at the moment. it also has a very wide range of sounds, unlike many sub generes where most tracks sound very similar. i've also noticed since i started getting into this sound, i've become a lot more open to more obscure genres and my taste has expanded quite a bit. that makes me happy.

The fact is that I'm talking about what's termed electro in this day and age. I used to listen to what was termed electro back in the days of Twilight 22, Afrika Bambaata (although he's still around), Cloud One, The Beat Club (now without searching on the internet, can you guess what was their big track and on what label it was released?)...and yes, I'm old enough to remember when TransEurope Express was released...believe it or not, that was also thought as electro before the massive explosion of all the differing edm genres...but I guess I still don't know what I'm talking about...maybe you should school me...

Sorry for the attitude, but I just get annoyed by people who think they know it all...

..refer to 2 posts above...I think I have a handle on it...but thanks anyway...I apologize for wasting your time by starting a whole new thread and giving my personal insight...and instead of complaining that you don't have the energy to explain the differences again, just don't post anything....I'm about 3 years older than you so I'm sure we grew up listening to some of the same music...so before you start calling someone else ignorant for posting their feelings about something, maybe you should try to carry on an insightful and informative dialogue..now I remember why I stopped posting stuff here...because of shite talkers such as yourself...who's ignorant now? Done...

Re: So what's with all the electro?

I wouldn't really even call it electro. I'd just say that most dj's are looking to play stuff that does more than the same 32 bar pattern for 9 minutes. They are looking for something more aggressive sounding and noisy. And I totally agree. Music...especially dance music needs to grow or it will die. Look at back in 2003, or was it 2002. Wasn't a great year for dance music, because the scene was so flodded with the same old crap.

I heard the digweed set from three...two weeks ago, and after my first listen I still wasn't into it, but now I think it's almost one of his best. It's the one with Pryda at the end.

IMO...that is.

Re: So what's with all the electro?

Here's a definition from Wikipedia. Take it for what you will.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro_%28music%29

The quintessential Electro track I can think of at the moment would be Ethan - In My Heart, which is being caned by Desyn Masiello. It was also featured on the newest Dave Seaman mix CD. Is that what you would define as Electro then?

Re: So what's with all the electro?

Give some examples, because that's what I define as Electro.
