What's the deal with Jimmy Van? :?:

Formerly the opening DJ for S&D, he has now become a sad shell of a DJ. As the transition DJ for Lee Burridge on saturday - after a wicked set by BK - he cleared the floor with such gems as the beatle's rocket man (huh? even a year ago it sux'd!) and a tears for fears remix of shout (who bothered to remix this track anyway?). he cut the energy level in half and i felt like i was wading through molasses.

while this may sound harsh and opinionated, it's not. it's a wake up call that standing on a stage and sliding a mixer knob while records spin no longer cuts it as a premier inter'l DJ. i know many others who attended the show who felt the same way.

for a refresher on how top intern'l DJing is done, see Lee Burridge. :LoveYou:

#219021Post 3 of 47

#219040Post 4 of 47

he is stuck in a k-hole

#219069Post 5 of 47

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

I guess i'll just have to wait and see on August 6, 2004 @ Club Elements here in San Juan, Puerto Rico as he will be playing along with Australia's hottest progressive/breaks producers right now INFUSION.

I've always thought he was overrated. I'll probably get flamed for that but I really haven't dug anything he's done.

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

I actually enjoyed his set. Thought it was great. Except for the Shout track, didn't really like it.

He did almost loose it at one point though.... :LoveYou:

I think the crowd dug him pretty good too.

Didn't stay for Lee, how was his set?

#221774Post 10 of 47

I believe he is red flagged by US immigration and currently cannot travel anywhere outside of the country.

#221783Post 11 of 47

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

Back when JVM opened up for S/D @ Twilo, his sets were perfect. But his sets recently have been all over the map - a little bit of this and that. IMO, expected a lot of his Bedrock record, but even that was wacky.

His production remains great though - ECIPS, Sanctuary, etc. But, don't know what happened with Jetlag.

/D

I could have sworn we had this conversation while I Iwas sobering up outside, because of Van M. I totally agree. Does he not know that we know something about music? W.T.F. was he thinking?

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

jimmy has never been one to drop a club on the floor, he is more downtempo groovy dj rather than a guy who comes in a does damage, he did a phenomenal job in march warming up for S&D at crobar. his bedrock cd is actually the hardest i have ever heard from him since orlando. either way he is a great mixer and has a wicked ear for the tunes that make the night flow, rather than the big moment.

even NYE at avalon was fucking insane, he had the whole club drooling for more grooves. 10 minutes into sasha's set and the whole club was still chanting JIMMY VAN M, JIMMY VAN M

check out the set for download in the recommendations section. it is the shit, restore my faith in JVM, who has always been one of my favourites.8)

Brilliant set.

Is that true? How did that happen? And how can I prevent that from happening to myself?

I dunno, me personally, I never thought Jimmy Van M was a spectacular stage show. I didn't dig his Bedrock CD too much either. I saw him open for Sasha & Digweed in April 2002 (I'm sketchy on the year) and he looked so bored and uninspired. You'd think being included on a tour with none other than Sasha & Digweed would make you one helluva happy guy.

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

Damn, I knew it. I was just too tired. the fucked up thng was I didn't take any cash. Left all my atm cards at home.

Was just gonna open a tab with my cc and they said "No, only cash". That's BS! How can a club so big and popular not be able to open up tabs! :MadNow:

one, what promoter put BK and Jimmy Van M together? destined for failure.

and two, rocket man was written by elton john.

i dont think this can be true cause hes down to play godskitchen global gathering next weekend, which is in england.

#221918Post 22 of 47

Yes, and if so, he wont be there. He couldnt play in Canada just the other day for that reason, so its unlikely he will be in the UK

he couldn't come to canada for this reason. that's how simon knows. :) we were all to drive up to vancouver for his show this friday. he couldn't get out of the country as he was red flagged by the us since he is an illegal alien. he's been working ways of getting this taken care of... so hopefully he'll show up for you.

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??
On behalf everyone at Noble House, BBC1 & The Alien Mental Association I am extremely devastated to announce that tonights show has been cancelled. I received a call at 10am this morning from Jimmy's agency informing me that Jimmy was not allowed to leave the US due to having been red flagged by the INS (US immigration). Born in Belgium, Jimmy is a resident alien in the States and has been red flagged for international travel. The situation is not good and he has been told that he will not as of now to be able to travel internationally in the forseeable future. I would like to stress that this is through no fault what so ever on our part and that his worker validation through Human Resources Canada was secured and in place. Having taken the last year off promoting events this is not the re-entry we were hoping for, obviously. A brilliantly painful reminder to myself as to why we have not been doing events as of lately. This is not to say that we still don't have a few aces up our sleeves for sometime down the road, because we do. So for the moment we are grounded, down but not out. We came close to talking Pascal into stepping up to the plate but this was also not to be. Having conferred with Sugar and all our partners the descision was made to cancel the night. We regret the reality of disappointment this delivers to all that were looking forward to this evening. I should have known something was up when I allowed myself to get excited about the show.

All the best in the meantime, Nigel @ Noble House
this is what happened the day before he was to play in vancouver. he was going to play in victoria on thursday nite, then vancouver on friday nite.

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

I thought Jimmy van M was alright. I've heard better set from him. But that Tears for Fears song was pretty crappy though.

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

Tears For Fears :Barf:

#221970Post 30 of 47

i really enjoyed his recent set from Pacha, Buenos Aires. May 24 to be exact. check the sets forum for a torrent of this set. its good stuff. peak time records for jimmy. i think he plays the beatles track though, but i had no problem with it.

We talking about Brett King right? Bummer to see all the energy Brett build up fall flat on its face when Van M hit the decks...

#222002Post 32 of 47

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

JVM completly sucked at spundae the last 3 times i've seen him there.

#222051Post 33 of 47

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

when JVM's tag-teaming he does kind of kill the mood for the first few swaps... got it together as the night went on the few times i've seen him though.

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

I was at Spundae watching him trainwreck as well.... ::sigh:: what can you do. As for Lee!!! HE TORE IT UP HARDCORE!!!!!!!!!! Lee's the sh!t, not onlt that but the next day on the boat party he still ripped up even with the boat rocking back and forth skipping through the tracks a little. Boo for Van M, yay for Burridge!!!!!!

#222081Post 36 of 47

Re:: What the hell happened to Jimmy Van M??

I haven't heard anything from JVM for a long ass time. I will say his warmup S&D set in chicago a few years ago was prob. the best I've seen.

And speaking of Burridge......holy shit! Saw him at sound-bar this past weekend and he rocked it.

Jimmy seems like he's in a slump. I enjoyed his Bedrock CD compilation, but it seems he's lost his momentum. Does he still play out with Sasha or Diggers?

was there a falling out?

seems strange in how his chart is trending down...

#222123Post 40 of 47
Does he still play out with Sasha or Diggers?

there was no falling out... and yes he does still play with them. i believe he's busy working behind the scenes though. he is a business man first and foremost. and he does a lot of business for sasha and john.
