I tried some absinthe that my friend had brought back from Europe. I loved it, however I know you can not buy absinthe legally in the USA. I was searching online and found some kits. I was wondering if anyone had tried these kits and if they actually work. Any information would be awesome. I was looking specifiaclly at www.greendevil.com.

Thanks,

Sean

Re: Absinthe?

never heard of absinthe kits. wormwood is poison so when it comes to cooking up a batch i'd definitely do a lot of research. this looks like a tight package but i'd hunt down some other recipes and see if there are major discrepancies between them to make sure it's not just a novelty kit. let us know how it goes, i've been curious and got burned years ago on some bunk stuff that i tried to order online...

Re: Absinthe?

a friend made some with a kit...it did work, but it didnt taste as good as normal absinthe (granted he added way too much wormwood cause he wanted the psychedelic effects). buy one from somewhere reputable, i dont think you'll have a problem.

absinthe is legal in canada (though the wormwood content is lower than the european counterpart)...you could just get someone to send you a bottle.

Dude, you can´t buy absinthe in the US?

Wow, I didn´t know that. It´s pretty damn easy to get it around here.

Wow...good thing my country is populated by alcoholics.

Here?s a joke BTW :

This guy is sitting alone in a bar, and since it?s pretty late already, the bartender tells him he must leave, because they have to close for the night. But he?s so drunk that as soon as he gets up, he falls down on the floor. He tries again, and falls down again. So he decides to drag himself to the door, and when he gets there he holds on to the door and makes a huge effort to get up...but he falls down. So he goes home like this...trying to get up on his feet and falling down everytime, until he crashes on his bed. The next morning when he wakes up, his wife tells him "Well, you got pretty drunk last night, huh?", and the guy asks "how the hell do you know that?!?". The wife answers "the bar owner called. You forgot your wheelchair".

Re: Absinthe?

My friend and I bought two bottles of it last year. He did all the research and ordering, I just paid for it. I'll ask him where he ordered it from, we didn't have any problems getting it, but it took more than a month to get here.

That is putting it nicely.

There is a resturant here that sold Absinthe drinks. We asked how he imports it and he said that is French Absinthe with a lower concentration of wormwood which makes it legal. It might be something worth looking into if you are really dying to drink Absinthe.

Re: Absinthe?

Absinthe in the dogs doo da's. Been trollied on it many times! Although you can get varying qualities of the stuff, ranging from 50% - 75% ABV. Tried some really good stuff from the Czech Republic once, boy i knew about it (or not as the case was!)

Got a bottle of Fruko Schulz at the minute (which is also from CZR) @ 60% booze, pretty good stuff. Always nice if you prepare it correctly with the caramelized sugar

Re: Absinthe?

^^^ yeah you can't drink it straight. Or at least it's not meant to be drunk that way.

Re: Absinthe?

even though it is not sold here in the states, it is legal to buy it from over seas. it is also legal to be in your possetion. it's just illegal to sell here.

i have been meaning to order some real soon. i think i'm going to go for the king of spirits gold. :) supposedly has the highest thujon content.

Tabu is also from that region, supposed to be the shiznit..

I've done it, prepared in the appropiate way (burn some suger over it, let it caramelize and then drop it into the Absithe, so it turns troubled white instead of clear), together with whiskey and tequila that night, all of them preceded by a few beers. Nothing. All these stories about hallucinations...BS man. If you like it, drink it, otherwise just get a good bottle of other booze....

Re: Absinthe?

just do some shrooms. it's probably easier to get too.

think i ordered from one that they put up, but didn't get the bottles that they recommended (not that maxim is journalistic perfection), and it only seemed like green booze...

no hallucinations at all. i figured i just got a bunk bottle, taking advantage of curious people in countries where there's a ban on it. i'd had high hopes since it came labeled through customs as 'anise oil' or some similar, cryptic, half-truth that might exploit a legal loophole with the stuff.

on the other hand, everyone i've known to grow shrooms has had excellent results.

Re: Absinthe?

the absinthe that produces any psychedelic effect at all has a much higher concentration of wormwood than most modern absinthe. you can drink a whole bottle of todays stuff and not get anything other than blindingly drunk.

back in the day when people like van gogh were drinking it...different story. part of the reason he went crazy was wormwood...

#493579Post 26 of 31

Re: Absinthe?

^^^ crazy? that's a bit harsh. he only hacked off his ear and mailed it to a woman while he was on it . . . silly artists... :)

#493682Post 27 of 31

Re: Absinthe?

I didn't get any visuals off it. All I got was seriously drunk and then a serious hangover the next day.

If you want to try a different drink to get drunk, then try absinthe. If your looking to hallucinate, there are more effective ways to go about it.

Re: Absinthe?

two things it will do.

a. kill my cold/flu b. kill me.

both are fine with me as long as i feel better.

Re: Absinthe?

Thanks for the maxim article link. Very cool links to some sights. I'm definately going to order a bottle. I was still a little curious about those kits. They say that they can produce a insane amount of thujone.

Re: Absinthe?

My mate bought me back a bottle from Prague. It was green and 70%. I drank over half the bottle one night straight, and ended up very drunk, but didn't feel anything in the way of hallucinations or even feel them coming on slightly.

It wouldn't be legal if they had a fun amount of wormwood in it, it's that simple.

Damn I didn't feel too good the next morning. :(

#494539Post 31 of 31

Re: Absinthe?

Its all about the wormwood. I had a monster session on Absinthe in Ibiza back in '99, didnt hallucinate but there was about 7 hours where I dont remember where we were, or what we were doing. Apparently we were dancing at Mambo's then had a party back in our hotel. I woke up on the balcony sometime the following evening! Huzzah
