Here's your chance guys:
Some of you, especially those that frequent the politics section on this board, may be familiar with my passion for the continent of Africa. I've been in West Africa a few month in 2003, and hopefully again next year's summer for about 3 months again. And then hopefully many many more times in my life.
Now, some of you may also be aware of the plans I've been pursuing to to able and help out there in the future. So far with only limited success, but I attribute that to the way I do it: I plan to just become successfull enough financially so I can start investing in projects. And me and my uncle are trying to arrange for high risk capital investments for bigger projects, like a local cotton processing factory in Burkina Faso, cheap housing solutions, and then a few other projects.
The deal is this: today (yeyeye, came with this idea a little late) my best GF, co-founder of the [B]Inchaban Foundation[/B], with whom I've been in Africa in 2003, is going to ride the bike with a group of other people: 50 km within 3 hours. From my town (Leiden) to The Hague (the city with the so much hated international court of justice) and back to Leiden again, to try and raise money for a few projects in the area we've been.
Unfortunately I cannot join her, since I've been unable to find a decent bike. Mine is a piece of junk, with the pedals out of position and one of them being so loose that i actually cannot ride it longer than 20 mins :D And my mates wanted to steal me one, but that would've tainted the spirit of this whole operation a bit of course.
The money raised is meant for the construction of a decent housing for a school near Ho, in Akoefe-Avenui in the southeast of Ghana. I myself have also managed to assemble a small computer for a school in Inchaban, a suburb of Takoradi (southwest of Ghana, at the coast). I've managed to get sponsors for a bout 100 euros already, but that's not nearly enough (I hope the others have managed to arrange for some nice figures as well though). The foundations for the school in Ho are already there, we're now aiming for enough money to construct the walls...and then it's learning material: books, pens, notebooks, benches, a blackboard and a teacher....
So for the first time in my life I'm going to ask for something here:
who's willing to donate a bit if she makes it? One dollar will do, more is always appreciated, but with 5 dollars we can buy a bag of cement, with 30 dollar a kid goes to school a whole year (compare that to my tuition fee: approx 1800 euros a year). But with just one dollar from everyone who's willing to do so, we're happy. One dollar ain't much here, but it's a lot over there: you can actually live a whole day on one or two dollars. One dollar buys us 3 notebooks, or 2.5 pens :-)
And just for your ease of mind: I am going that direction next year guys...I can check what's happening with the money. And Marlous (my GF) is going there this october, and will be able to take pics of the site as well.

I will try and scan some of the pics I made there when I get to my parent's place, I can even show you some pics with the kids for whom the school is meant on it. I've been dying to return there and see how things are going, but won't have the opportunity until next year. But if I can make a little difference during my absence, I'd be delighted!
