Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
and to make things worse, the levies in new orleans are said to have broken today, flooding most of the area.
www.redcross.org
and also, they are looking for anyone with electrical, carpentry, plumbing, metalworking, and heavy equipment experience to call your local offices to see if you can help to simply stop the flooding and bring back the needed utilities to the neccessary areas.
Hopefully people will learn one thing from this ... Ya should try to get the hell outta way of CAT-4 hurricane and try not to take any chances. This is just so sad, seeing people's houses being destroyed, all their belonging washed away in ruins. I feel mad and sad for the people who stayed behind thinking its not a big deal to stay behind and face CAT-4 hurricane. I have been in a hurricane, and its not a joke.
at least there isn't as much death and disease as last year's tsunami. not that we desperately need the help, but i wonder how long it'll take before other countries start donating time, materials, and money to us. after the tsunami relief bashing last year I'm guessing we won't see much.
www.wdsu.com for a live video feed from the local New Orleans news station. Absolutely heartbreaking.

this is fucked up - looting http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050830/ap_on_re_us/katrina_looting
Yeah, they were just saying on the news that even if they do arrest the looters that there is no place to take them.
Yeah, they were just saying on the news that even if they do arrest the looters that there is no place to take them.
that makes me sick. hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes, and all these fucks can think about is stealing jewelry. I'd lock the fuckers up in a cell regardless... even if it IS submerged 20 feet in water :MadNow:

some of those people didnt have a way to get out of town. new orleans isnt exactly a city of riches. there's a lot of poverty there. some of those folks had no choice but to stay and ride it out. there's reports of people stuck in their attics cos their house is flooded with 10 feet of water. fucking awful! :(
can anyone find some info about how to donate. ie: water, clothes, canned foods, etc....
Exactly. Many don't have televisions and even more are without cars. The people of the city itself rely on public transportation and walking to get around so how were they to drive away?

there's always black sheeps everywhere even in times like this ... the only beautiful thing that came out of Katrina was from above her
someone took photos of Katrina and posted them here

I'm starting with www.redcross.org. There are other organizations out there, but the RC is working overtime right now and probably represents the fastest way to get help to those who need it.
This is truly awful. My grandmother lives in New Orleans but is thankfully up here with my folks for my wedding in a few days -- she hasn't been able to reach anyone to find out how her house is, though. My grandpa, however, wasn't doing well (physically) and couldn't evacuate -- he ended up right in the path of the storm, just west of Mobile. To top it off, he was in a mobile home. Not a great idea, I realize, but it isn't like he's got a lot of say in the matter. We haven't been able to reach him, either, but are hoping that's just because people are without power, phone service, etc. I really hope he's OK.
yeah toasty, hope he's ok man. i work with a guy from Gulfport Mississippi, and he's been pretty shaken up about this. obviously he cant get in touch with his family. i really want to help out if i can. will look into donatations through Red Cross.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
jibby.
second harvest is the place to go if you wanna send food and clothes.
red cross for money as they are working directly with the ARMY and National Guard.
sadly, this is getting worse by the hour.
I thought that we had it bad in Florida last year, but this looks worse than all 3 storms combined.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
Didn't really expect this from Chavez...
CARACAS (AFP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered to send food and fuel to the United States after the powerful Hurricane Katrina pummeled the US south, ravaging US crude production. ADVERTISEMENT
The leftist leader, a frequent critic of the United States and a target himself of US disapproval, said Venezuela could send aid workers with drinking water, food and fuel to US communities hit by the hurricane.
"We place at the disposition of the people of the United States in the event of shortages -- we have drinking water, food, we can provide fuel," Chavez told reporters.
Chavez said fuel could be sent to the United States via a Citgo refinery that has not been affected by the hurricane. Citgo is owned by Venezuela's state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).
In the Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for a quarter of total US oil output, 92 percent of crude and 83 percent of natural gas production were shut down due to Hurricane Katrina, which slammed Louisiana and Mississippi, according to US government data.
Venezuela is the fourth-largest provider of oil to the United States, supplying some 1.5 million barrels a day.
Last week, Chavez offered discount gasoline to poor Americans suffering from high oil prices and on Sunday offered free eye surgery for Americans without access to health care
^awesome. link?

 That's stunning. It's stunning that any country would come to our aid, because, well, countries don't normally offer us aid for anything . It's even more stunning that it came from a Chavez right after Toolio called for his assassination...
Kudos to him...
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
send aid workers with drinking water, food and fuel to US
read: send military operatives with C4, Ammonium Nitrate, and lighter fuel to US to take out Jackass Robertson.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
If it helps then keep an open mind and think of the greater good.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
would be great way to extend the olive branch and start to show that the two continents need to unite.
send money and food and water !!!!!!
don't drink the water imo
can you provide a link for Second Harvest sightless?
edit* nevermind, just saw the link Jenks posted.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
One My thoughts and prayers go out to everybody that has been effected by the hurricane... Man i thought we got it good last year... this hurricane had Ivan look like a joke...I don't enough know what say.. speechless
Also Jib we need to talk.. hit me up on AIM.. I'm not at home cause of power is out.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
former cheif of ARMY Corp. of Engineers on TV (msnbc) right now. saying this might not actually be fixable. the levies are breaking more and more. getting to be hundreds of feet wide and the whole region is ordered to be evacuated.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
they should never allow them to move back because it is below sea level.. this was bound to happen. I feel bad for the people that got caught in the middle of this monster.. but in all honesty they were below sea level. humans shouldn't be there..
its not up to the general population to fix the levie problem. the Gov't needs to step up on this. i hope they get it sorted so in the future there isnt another disaster of this scale.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
The number of dead was still unclear, a day after Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast with 145-mph winds. But one Mississippi county alone was believed to have lost as many as 80 people ? 30 of them from a beachfront apartment house that collapsed under a 25-foot wall of water. And Louisiana said many were feared dead there, too, making Katrina one of the most punishing storms to hit the United States in decades.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (search) said hundreds, if not thousands, of people may still be stuck on roofs and in attics, and so rescue boats were bypassing the dead.
"We're not even dealing with dead bodies," Nagin said. "They're just pushing them on the side."

Who knows what the death toll may end up being once the flooding goes down. I can say this is worse than I ever could have imagined. Hardcore...hard-fucking-core.
what i'm worried most about is when the water finally recedes in a couple weeks, how many bodies are gonna be found in their homes?
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
Yep. Just like the tsunami...they just kept coming and coming and coming. This is the biggest tragedy I've ever witnessed. I knew it would be bad, but god damn....we are talking about an entire region of the country being completely leveled. Some of the shots I have seen are just beyond belief. People always say "It's like a bomb went off." Now I know what they mean. :?
my heart goes out to all the folks. some really sad stuff on the tube.

Not to take away from the tragedy in the gulf, but this isn't even close to the scale of damage and loss from the Tsunami. I don't know if i'll ever see something like that in my life time again. I hope not.
^^^ Jenks is right. This is in no scale what occured over there. Still does not defeat the point that it is terrible in the states. Hit the sweet spot if you ask me. Most of the pre-landful predictions have come true. Lot's of people with nothing, but clothes on their back. It just feels a lot closer, because it is.
also the AP photo link has been updated. so if you kinda what to re-live it ... go ahead and click click.
Re: Hurricane Katrina Damage
Holy smackers what a mess, and what a tragedy man...Glad my dad is out at sea in the Gulf, which is usually the safer place to be in cases like this. All strength to those who havent heard from their family and/or friends in that region, I can only hope for the best for them.
[edit] Just sent my da an email, hope he's okay. Asked him if he can send some medication (redundant or just a little overdue, those are usually perfectly useable, since the dates are arbitrary) to places where they need some. It won't be much, but everything helps.
