"Monster hurricane with 145 mph winds could submerge New Orleans under 20 feet of water, cause $100B in damage;"

Nagin said he spoke to a forecaster at the hurricane center who told him that "this is the storm New Orleans has feared these many years."

"Making matters worse, at least 100,000 people in the city lack the transportation to get out of town. "

"The only dangerous hurricanes so far are the ones we've been drinking," said Fred Wilson of San Francisco

"I know they're saying `Get out of town,' but I don't have any way to get out," said Hattie Johns, 74. "If you don't have no money, you can't go."

:HolyShit: :Nerves: :Scared: :bow down: :Preachin:

Ok heres a little question .. Why the fuck do people live in wooden houses and trailers slap bang in the middle where hurricanes hit hardest ?.. Always puzzles the fuck out of me that one.

when they show the aftermath once the storms gone by u don't see the people in brick houses crying on the camera

Re: New Orleans

^^ Agreed

Max Sustained Winds now 175!

Only three Category 5 hurricanes ? the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale ? have hit the United States since record-keeping began. The last was 1992's Hurricane Andrew, which leveled parts of South Florida, killed 43 people and caused $31 billion in damage. The other two were the 1935 Labor Day hurricane that hit the Florida Keys and killed 600 people and Hurricane Camille, which devastated the Mississippi coast in 1969, killing 256.

srry but nature is one of the strongest forces ppl can come up against .. if u live in a path natures forces always seems to target i would consider it common sense to protect myself to the upmost . i know i seem cynical but that comes with age . wooden and tin shack houses don't protect u from shit . even the lowleist houses in england are built with brick . just to think ohh i'll save a few bucks" just" so i can live in "florida" and i'll make my house out of something as insignifficent as paper because it's cheap .then when 150 mph winds reduce it to fuckall i won't blame everyone but poor planning .. as i said i am cynical but good brings me joy excellence brings me extasy .. stupidity deserves derision... u live in the worlds wealthiest country i should imagine all houses in Poland are made with brick so why can't the grand ol U S of A. a tragedy is something u can't see comming innevitablity is something you can

Re: New Orleans

^^ Just because the U.S. has the GDP doesn't mean that all Americans are wealthy. I'm sure the people that live in mobile homes and pre-fabricated housing are just living there because that's all they can afford.

Cut those people some slack. They already have a hard enough life as it is and are trying to get by...then when a hurricane/etc comes around, they're wiped out and have to start over again.

Re: New Orleans

Yeah, it's going to be really bad. N.O. is already below sea level and they have to pump water out daily...so when the 20ft+ storm surge comes in, they're going to be flooded big time. They're speculating the worse case scenario that New Orleans could be under 30ft of water!

...then couple that with the hurricane force winds over 165mph = big time disaster.

Have you seen how crazy it is for the locals to leave the city via highway? just imagine trying to get back in after the storm is over! Man, I feel for them.

I went through about 4 or 5 hurricanes last year and it defintely sucks ass - but it's nowhere near to this level...

I hear you on that one man. The strongest one we went through last year was Jeanne, and Katrina is WAAAAAY worse. I'm trying to stay optimistic, but this does not look good. Could we really lose an entire US city??

I hope everyone who can seek shelter has. If any [mn]ers are in NO, please seek shelter ASAP. But even now it might be too late. I've got a feeling tomorrow is going to be a very dark day. :?

And to you bart_smastard...fuck off asshole. Don't talk shit, then back pedal as fast as you can as soon as someone calls you out on it. No one gives a shit about your culture right now. Many people could die and many homes are going to be lost. Show some fucking respect, dipshit.

#468073Post 19 of 64

Re: New Orleans

That storm is really scary. Hopefully it dies out to a category 4 like some are thinking before it hits.

The flooding the storm surge creates will be what's bad for New Orleans more so than the wind. They're estimating a nearly 30 foot storm surge that will put most of New Orleans under water. So, it doesn't matter what your home is built out of if you're under water.

"So, imagine you're the poor person who decides not to evacuate: Your house will disintegrate around you. The best you'll be able to do is hang on to a light pole, and while you're hanging on, the fire ants from all the mounds -- of which there is two per yard on average -- will clamber up that same pole. And, eventually, the fire ants will win."

Re: New Orleans

Bart actually has a point, albeit inadvertently. How smart was it to found a major city on the gulf of Mexico that lies 10+/- ft. below sea level?

The worst case scenarios are pretty grim, weeks of flooding with all types of chemicals and waste material which has nowhere to go. NO apparently has all above ground cemeteries as well; if the city floods all the human remains are expected to be mixed in with the other debris :|

No matter how severe NO gets hit, they are saying the evacuation has ceased production in oil refineries in the area (25% of our gas comes from there) so gas prices are expect to spike even further

you guys are all douches. the next time a tornado comes your way, or an equake happens in your city, or a tsunami hits your city (along with 20 other countries), or a forrest fire happens near your town, or a volcano erupts 20 miles from your house, or your city suffers from a long drought period, I'll start reiterating how stupid you were for living in tornado alley/near an inactive fault line/near a coast/near the forrest/near a dormant volcano/away from a major water source. give it a break guys, it's a fucking natural disaster, and it's not anybody's fault. if someone can actually manage to find a home away from all these naturally-occuring events, they have terrorists/murderers/rapists/general dumbasses roaming the streets.

So what you?re saying is that Holland, for example, shouldn?t exist?

And California lies on top of the San Adreas faultline, so people shouldn?t live there?

And my city, Lisbon...it lies on a faultline too, and it?s common scientific knowledge that sooner or later a big quake will happen...should we all get the fuck out of here right now?

Anyway, I only realized how huge this was when I saw all our TV newscasts opening with news about this. Also, our newspapers had this as the big headline this morning...the last time something happening inside the US territory got this much coverage was the 9/11 attacks.

As such, I hope any and all MN?ers living in the region are alright, my thoughts and best wishes are with you at this moment. The images they?re showing us on TV are truly frightening.

you have the ass end of the Mississippi river and a town that is already under water level. mix that with raw sewage from the sewers and toxic overflows from plastic companies and power plants. add swampland creatures like aligators. you got yourself some yummy gumbo.

okay here is me defending the way i think again . but also backing it up with substance . my house was opposite a park we got around 150 under 18's decending on it at weekends . the problems eased off a lil because even the police are fed up of the crime and violence it has created and have started to crack down on them . howeva myself and my neighbours were too intimidated to walk to the shop at night . so do i decide to have all my summers wrecked in this way or do i get the fuck out before i get hurt or hurt someone else . i moved away last tue ... spot a danger get the fuck away . i feel sorry for my neighbours who are still there and i realy pitty the new occupents of my house . and i don't envy the ppl in new orleans or where eva else that storm hits

#468231Post 31 of 64

bart. not all people have the time and money to move. i understand your point, but that is life. Mother Earth has her ways, and frankly there is not much you can do. Surely, to bitch about is one thing, but most these people got the fuck out of dodge.

Either way, you need to show some more tact in issues like this. Just be careful what you write, and esp. how you write it. You can say things in a very tactful way and also with taste.

What I'm saying is there is a such thing as putting yourself in harms way. It is a caluculated risk that apparently doesn't always get calculated.

Why don't you tell me... as someone who lives on top of a fault, what is your reasoning? Have you considered the possibility of a quake in your decision to live there?

I was basically making a similar point to picklemonkey.

Not criticising you, just saying that your logic and Bart?s was flawed. In my opinion, of course.

And the most important thing, again, is that I hope people over there will be OK (as much as possible under the circunstances).

Agreed, we are all concerned about everyonedown in NO. I actually just edited my post just as your were replying. I would like to know what you think on the matter. As I see it, it's not a black/white issue, both sides have flawed logic, both sides also have good points.

I think it's a worthwhile discussion:

Do people consider natural disasters seriously enough when choosing a place to live? (or when choosing to stay in a "risky" area)

That?s a good question. Maybe sometimes they have no choice? But as I was thinking about what you said, I was actually thinking where could I get some info about the history of New Orleans, more precisely, who were it?s founders and why they chose that place to build a city. That could probably partially answer your question.

I know it?s got something to do with the French, so that might explain a lot...

But going back to what I said, look at Holland. That whole country was literraly dragged out of the water...the whole country is below sea level! I mean, the guys needed space, that?s the only explanation for it.

Re: New Orleans
Bart actually has a point, albeit inadvertently. How smart was it to found a major city on the gulf of Mexico that lies 10+/- ft. below sea level?
Well, it's not as if cities have historically been just founded and built in a spot that has been evaluated and assessed for major risks in the way that a shopping mall or suburban housing development is built. Cities tend to grow over time, and that growth is fueled by natural resources and trade routes among other factors. In the case of New Orleans, it's right at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which was and is an excellent port into the "New World." Do you think the Europeans who settled there and built the city in a totally new and different environment halfway across the world from their native home could have predicted the changing global climate contributing to the increase in number and intensity of hurricanes hundreds of years into the future? Surely hurricanes were experienced in the early history of New Orleans, but obviously the benefits of the location outweighed the risk posed at the time, thus the city remained and grew into a prominent major U.S. city.

I might change your question to ask, how smart is it to move to an area now with a known history of major and relatively regular occurance of natural disaster, with no indication that the risk will diminish in the future? But even this is a poor question, as sometimes people just have to make decisions and take actions that oppose obvious safety logic for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which are financially related.

Re: New Orleans

Luckily NOLA dodged a direct hit, but the towns and counties around it are not fairing as well. Flooding, damage, everything that was expected is happening, thank god not as bad as was first thought. Keep your fingers crossed for everyone in the effected area. Last I heard there was 9 dead and houses flooded up to their roofs.

#468345Post 40 of 64

Re: New Orleans

Just a little add-on here, but Nahrlins (New Orleans) doesnt really get hit hard by hurricanes cept for every 40 years or so. I was there exactly 4 years ago this week, and there was one that was worried to be headed in our direction... the tourists were buggin out, but the locals are used to them turning or weakening before they get hit. It didn't even so much as rain, and lord knows the humidity and temperature there in August could welcome any breeze at all....

And another side-note on the US being the richest nation in the world.... ROFLMAO!!!!

Our national debt alone would suggest otherwise, but just for those who aren't aware of how shit really is in this land of the "free" or whatever the fuck it should be called

Here is a summary of the statistics for the distribution of wealth in the US as of 1998, the most recent information available that has been fully analyzed:

% of US Population % of Wealth Owned

Top 1% 38.1% Top 96-99% 21.3% Top 90-95% 11.5% Top 80-89% 12.5% Top 60-79% 11.9% General 40-59% 4.5% Bottom 40% 0.2%

And as far as getting to government to do something about it goes, they're a little busy demolishing, oops, I mean saving poor people on the other side of the planet, or wait, they might be protecting us by letting them vote ( i mean forcing them to vote ) or something having to do with the Nukeiller family values.

Did that clear anything up? I can't wait to see Bush's heartfelt disaster relief publicity extravaganza... God he just makes me want to die for my country's SUV drivers...
