Avalon Emerson?

I have been trying very hard this year to branch out from my usual stable of DJs that I follow and listen to.

This week I made an honest effort to find out what Avalon Emerson is all about.

After listening to her EM, Mutek and various other sets I am left with the following conclusions:

She does have technical DJ skills

Her tune selection is anything but boring and often is quite interesting

Beyond that I just get what the fuss is about her as a DJ. She rarely transitions smoothly between tracks and quite often relies on washed out effects to get from to tune to tune.

So before I give up entirely WHAT AM I MISSING?

She's lauded all over the place and bouquets are flying in her direction regularly, BUT I just don't get it.

I have nothing but respect for her, but I am at a loss at what is special about the sets she plays.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Avalon Emerson?

I can't help since I share the same doubts about her. She seems to be a big deal. And she IS an interesting producer.

I'm generally not that interested in smooth transitions, mixing in key, etc. to be honest. And I think all the attention is for her as a producer. By coincidence I was just listening to this

A bit too abstract for the dancefloor :).

Re: Avalon Emerson?

^^^ I read that very long thing in resident advisor and to me she seems to be entranced with the process not the end result.

Yes, The Art of the DJ Feature. I did enjoy that read. At least she seems quite down to earth and quite the nice gal. I just can't get into the music that is all over the place.

Re: Avalon Emerson?

I gave Amelie Lens' Fabric Presents a chance. But I had to stop after 25 minutes because it's bang-bang-bang.

Re: Avalon Emerson?

cool idea branching out... i think that's important tbh.

will give her EM from last year a whirl. evidently "eclectic" is her style.

Re: Avalon Emerson?

Anyone given Charlotte De Witte some listening time? Not trying to make this the female techno DJ thread, but I see she's got the BBC Radio 1 residency going on.

Others on this thread have also recommended Timudjin???

REALLY trying to break out of long standing stable of jocks LOL

Re: Avalon Emerson?

Charly is another over-hyped techno DJ. I find her music too dark and relentless. But that's her best quality too. She plays really dark stuff, Regis, Perc...
