Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

The quality of music hasn't been great recently for prog. I'm kinda of burned out on that deep, dark sound from years ago now and the electro thing has got me burned out recently too. Like said earlier, it's hard to find that track that moves you.

I know most of you hate trance, but I was a huge trance fan in the late 90s and started listening to some old sets from back then. The energy in the music is still unbelievable and I don't see it being matched currently. As for the trance DJs of today playing prog, sure I can see them playing certain tracks considered prog. Most trance people sometimes move over to prog like I did around 2000. It seems like a natural progression.

I've been enjoying Luke Fair's sets this past year because I think his sound is a little unique and incorporates house, prog, and electro, but seems to keep it fresh.

And I can see why Sasha plays Behind the Wheel on every set or show this year. Because the crowd really enjoys that track and he gets a good reaction. He's not playing directly for us, but the people who paid cash to come out and see him. We're a select few who actually come to these sites, download, mix, and really enjoy this music.

Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

Another problem is many people talk about prog vs. electro, which is an ignorant opposition. Wake up, folks: there are 100 other EDM genres besides electro that are not progressive.

Also, most people talk about electro and wouldn't recognize it if it bit them in the ass. 75% of the times they are referring to tech house or techno anyway.

ppl seem to b losing track about what this thread is all about .. i want opinions on whether the availabilty of music these days and the frequency of which we listen due to modern technology is either spoiling us or whether it is affecting the sets dj's are playing

Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

I couldn't agree with you more...I've been toying with the idea of giving up spinning just for the mere fact that I'm not moved by much of the stuff coming out these days. Don't get me wrong, I love progressive but it's definitely taken a turn to the mellow side...much too mellow and not enough oomph to play out at a club. I stopped playing trance when the prog. sound came about, but have since resumed playing it to cover for the lack of energetic prog. tunes that could be played towards the end of the night. And this electro business, not a fan at all...there are maybe 2 tracks that are coined as electro that I don't mind but the sound generally doesn't have enough feeling to it for me...gimme some dark, chunky, tribally, prog. shite anyday....

no, exposure is something that you would think could only make a scene grow. i think it's whats mentioned above, a lot of the tracks (most especially in prog) are weak at the moment. and also, people don't want to hear the music change. someone posted about just wanting some deep dark prog instead of electo. well, the deep dark prog is what used to do it for me as well, but now things are changing, and that should be exciting. people don't want to move on to new djs or producers for some reason. everyone is always bitching about wanting more tunes and music, well when new faces get in the game, they are going to have there own unique influence on the sound. i've actually progressed to tech house and even some minimal techno. and maybe digweed plays some electro-ey styled tracks, he is by no means an electo dj.

also, theres a lot of very young people making contributions to the scene. in detroit, they let elevation play out in the clubs when he was 17. regardless of his producing skills, (we wont even talk about his djing) what can you really know about setting a proper club vibe when your not even old enough to get in?

Change is constant. Growth is optional.

Great statement.

I think that the proliferation of both mp3 players and the availability of the music online (sometimes minutes after it's aired) definitely "spoils" us. There is something called overexposure and I think that that is what we are dealing with right now.

I gave up djing almost 2 years ago, after djing for 12 years. Once cd's and mp3's became the norm, it just wasn't the same/fun anymore. With vinyl there was an exculsivity for tracks. Only so many pieces of vinyl could be pressed, so it was exciting getting to the store on import day trying to get a copy of this or that in your hands. And you might be lucky to get something that everybody and their mother didn't have. Today you just go to oh, about 100 different sites and just d/l something b4 it's even released. I just don't think quality music can be made fast enough to keep up with the demand. Thus dj's are forced to play the exceptional tracks more often, thus wearing it out for those of us trying to stay upfront with the music.

Just my $.02.

Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

I find myself purchasing stuff more on the prog/breaks trip than solid prog then occasionally working a bit of four four in for texture. Habersham yes, Steve Porter no, no, no.

Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

djrapture - good post!

I'm thinking of giving up as well, for a combination of reasons. I hardly buy vinyl because the availability in my area has decreased and also I am always skint these days. Decks are wicked for mucking about on when you've had a few beers, but I find myself buying records and only playing them a few times to be honest.

In response to the argument - we are spoilt and overexposed. I used to love it before I had access to the internet, as i never used to know the tracklist to a cd until I got to the store the day it was released. Now I know it 6 weeks before it comes out and it does unfortunately affect whether I buy it or not.

Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

good music is good music. cd, mp3, vinyl, stipulations or not. when good music is played all people rock.

to some degree it is the users fault. you do have to over-expose yourself with set downloads and mp3 grabs. so why is this bitching going on?

in regards to vinyl vs cd. I was always pro vinyl always disliked cd jocks ... but technology has got to the point where the sword is now mightier then the pen. as i stated in the beginning ... good music is good music. and even if i dose myself with live sets all year ... I still find gold. Which makes me ask ... WTF are you guys listening to?

Re: ipods fucking up dj's ?

i like this thread ...

the different takes and what not

u need hot music but what i really like is different mixes of the same sond being played or things like that

Danny T pulls it off well, I'll never forget the closing party @ Arc and he played a song that everyone sung together awesome time

let people do what they do, I'm sure they have their reasons but if u feel a certain way do it that way and if others like it they'll listen ...

I BELIEVE ...
