does anyone do this?

with all the software and techie tricks i was wondering if there is a dj/live act that does a completely improvised live set? a step beyond that real-time remixing stuff...just going to a gig with a pile of samples and sounds and turning it into a set.

you'd have to be alot more musical than the average superstar DJ to pull it off, but i think it'd be pretty cool.

I was thinking about this some time ago... Does anybody really do it? It would be sort of top thing you can do as a dj... Imagin this with a similar artistic act on visuals - combined from samples only to suit the current ambience of the place. 8)

Doesn't Green Velvet/Cajmere do something like that? :NotMe:

Re: does anyone do this?

I'm not sure, but I think Pure Science mostly bases his live shows on working with small fragments. At least he used to. He was one of the very first laptop performers, long before Ableton.

Re: does anyone do this?

this is exactly what i have been talking about. i want sasha to do something like this with the high and mighty trend of abelton. would be cool to hear some reprises and main hooks in different form.

Re: does anyone do this?

I honestly thought that's what the Ableton fuss was all about at first. I mean, isn't it called Ableton LIVE?? Like pickle was saying, I've always pictured that to be what Hawtin and his kind did. Just started with a beat and rolled. Either way, it would be cool.

Isn't that what Sasha does with his Maven? 8)

Haha...I was thinking the same thing. I do it so often that my friends think I have a cocaine addiction because i always have the clitty litter on my nose. :Naughty: :EatMe:

But I agree that it would be sick to see Sasha do some crazy ass live synth. shit.

Not even funny. Here is an Oregon man ...

"More than 3,000 pairs of panties: This, along with some stray dryer lint, is what prosecutors around Oregon are accusing Sung Koo Kim of stealing. Last month, yet another Oregon county rang Kim up on charges of stealing underwear, this time from a Pacific University dorm in Forest Grove. And almost five months after Brooke Wilberger disappeared from Corvallis, Kim is still the only suspect in the case. Does having a thing for women's knickers lead to violent crime? To sate our curiosity, WW spoke with Portland psychologist and fetish expert Kevin McGovern."

i think he does a lot more. i would like to say he has all the tracks busted up and has millions of samples he can use. maven is a music god, and sasha is the son.

was the trio X-Press2. three guys all playing at once each with two to three decks.

your buddy could have been right. hawtin used to do full equipment sets at sanky soaps in manchester UK. this was before he was using laptops and final scratch. he would mix tracks back and forth on the decks, but he kept going to another machine to save snips and clips of what he was playing off the records. about half way into the set he ditched the decks and played off this machine recycling the sounds from earlier in the night. it was amazing to see. i wish i knew technically what was going on, but is was definately live he would switch stuff on and off and tweek knobs along the way. he never looked up. he was in the zone. easily the hardest working dj i have ever seen. since then i have seen him but he was staring into a laptop screen.

Infusion Live claim to be completely live and improvised, and they rock at it :D

EXACTLY. I was just gonna say that. There was a video floating around of these guys back in 2004. i think it was from club Nerve or something for the WMC. Not really sure though. Awesome video. They really rocked it that night. I would to get a hold of that video again.

They do what they call the "MPC routine" where each one of them has an MPC3000 sampler and a DJ mixer and between them they perform as a band, each playing different parts from the MPC pads. Absolutely amazing to see, they have it as an extra on DJ Shadow's In tune and on time DVD - well worth checking out.
