Just got back from Ireland, good hols, went to Global Gathering in Cork on Sunday, fucking disgraceful turnout, loads of early 90's raver types wearing Altern8-esque boilersuits and dustmasks  This was supposed to be a 16000 event but it looked like around 5000 to me, anyways, first caught Zabiela in the Global Arena (which was shoved right down the back of the site) playing to a couple of hundred people and he didn't fail to abuse my ears with his usual brand of inane scratching and abrasive noise :x Howells was good, Lawler was better, Sasha & Digweed finally came on at 10pm, still only about 3-400 in there by now, Digweed "kicked" off with some of his usual brand plod-prog but picked up towards the end of his first hour, then Sasha came on and turned out a decent hour, then Digweed came on for 30 mins, was ok, then Sasha came on for 30 mins and was fucking incredible, there were only about 200 people in there by now but Sasha really fucking banged it out, really lifted the night, and big respect to him for actually looking interested and clapping to the crowd and dancing around, must have been a bit of a let down for them but Sasha played it out well, last hour was back to back and i fucked off 15 mins before the end cause it was fucking freezing, good night though thanks to Sasha, wouldn't go there again though, The mrs took the camera so will post the pics soon. :)

Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
sad sounding turnout simon. at least you saw S&D. :NotMe:
these events are worthless imo... cant compare to a crowd that comes out just for the boys...
fuckin hate ravers
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
i can not stand e-tards, naked people at a sweaty show with a head full of acid, and fucking whistle blowers. :DumbAss:
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
such a bad turn-out for such a good lineup of dj's.
europeans are spoiled. you guyz get a music festival just about every weekend in the summer.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
at least zabiela played our remixes of robophobia and blue monday!!
happy days!
That sucks. Especially for such a great lineup.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
Grrr, what is the matter with these people  . Would have f**king loved to have been there!!
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
The Irish have bad tastes IMO
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
that is exactly why I had to move away from the midwest of the states. a party with sasha and digweed with 5000 people would be the biggest event ever. but after living in liverpool and in the UK for a while I understand what you are saying. 5000 people for a festival style event is a piss poor crowd. its all relative I guess. I'm sure they have played for even smaller crowds. I can remember some KC parties where it literally is a DJ in an empty tent.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
danks for da review Chem, and yes post some pics! :D
I'm sure they have played for even smaller crowds...
i can remember going to Simons (Gainesville, Florida) for digweed one night. and there was less than 50 people in there. that didnt matter cos he still banged it out! what i love about them (s&d) is that they play their best to whomever is listening, no matter the size of the crowd.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
dat so true at wmc space 2003 6 am dey might have been 50 peeps in da main room chuck c and me were dancing up front with prob 5 other peeps and they were totally jammin it was like they were playing just for us.....unreal
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
chuck c and me were dancing up front with prob 5 other peeps
that was exactly what happened the last time i saw jonathan lisle ... he was just banging it to a party of 5 :D :D
totally unreal .... like we had booked the club and had a private party
thats what i call being professional and loving the job ... it doesnt matter whether if they are playing to a crowd of 5 or 50000 :D
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
Shame about that, i do find that dance festivals are shite, been to a few good ones but i don't go anymore, u pay alot of money and they treat u like shite. Bad orgnatsation etc..
Still at least u can say that u have been.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
yeah, something similar happened during the delta heavy tour. they were suppose to play the san diego arena (5000+), but they had to settle for the montage (300+). fuck, did i mind? hell no, it was a great way to see 2 of the world's biggest dj's in an intimate setting.
also, that's a complete 180 from the buenos aires video that was posted.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
Nice review chem.
Outdoor festivals are shite.

Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
I have to give these guys respect for not letting their egos get in the way and just not play b/c people didn't show up like some DJ's do.
What he said^
went to creamfields in 99, was a stellar line up but was way too busy, every 10 seconds you were stopping dancing to let soemone through. And every dj ended with heaven scent!
Then went to gatecrasher millennium, excatly the same although the millennium vibe cancelled all that out. Wouldnt do another event like that again.

Totally off the subject, but I had to highlight this  These words were echoing in my head yesterday as I struggled to get through his recent Proton Radio set.
Perfect description of JZ IMO.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
Kobe my friend , i think we have a similar taste in music , I never liked any of his live sets that I d/led , not a single one , maybe a couple of tracks here and there but not one , I dont feel a vibe with all that scratching he does , but I ve never seen him live , so I think he still deservs that I see him live and then judge once and for all . too much of a hype and a trend I think .

he can play some nice breakbeat tunes, but that is it :? nice and humble kid dough 8)
Was down to Escape in the Park 4 years ago or so.
Prog tent had Hybrid, Lawler and a few other top names with Sasha headlining. Must have peaked for sasha with 200 ppl in there. 50 oif them were just sitting chilling at the back of then tent the rest going mental with plenty of dancing space.
The hard house tent btw, was one in one out at 2pm in the afternoon.

Basically the only thing I have ever liked from him was his Guest Mix done on Ableton. Like you I will go see him live to make a final judgement, but all the tricks in the world don't amount to diddly-squat if the music doesn't sound good to my ears.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
Big shame Chem ... those festivals are shite and nearly always a big disappointment.
Give me an intimate club any day of the week. Get yourself over to Fundacio Ibiza instead - the weather's far better !
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
well.. i haven't been there but i've heard that there was more than 40000 ppl and that the bedrock tent was full .. what's the truth :?:

You are thinking of the English event mate, i'm on about the Irish one on Sunday, there was no Bedrock tent there. http://www.globalgathering.ie/
So, where are the pics Simon?

Count me as one of the 50. My friends were up on the terrace BEGGING me to come up and check it out, but there is something in my DNA that wouldn't let me willingly leave a room in which Sasha & Digweed were playing. It paid off, because I actually got to go up in the booth with them. Wicked...

P.S. That was the darkest set I've ever heard... I'm not sure I'd even call it "music." More like a journey into my inner psyche narrated by S&D.

Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
two year delay in a responce to a thread! Cool!
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
FYI ... as you've been away for 2-years - Diggers has a new hairdo. Sasha plays off Ableton and has ditched the prog for acid (so you may be a tad disappointed with the stuff he's playing).

:shock::shock::shock:
as someone who has seen him live 6 or so times in the past 2 years, he's only been getting better since the switch over from vinyl. but then again maybe i like the fact that he doesnt keep things stagnant.
but thanks for your opinion, just dont assume everyone will agree with it. thats quite big headed of ya;)

Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
Hey Jay813 .. not being "big headed" - it was simply a tongue in cheek remark, with an added touch of irony: I'm genuinely glad you dig what Sasha's playing currently. Having played Sasha's 2000 (Tel Aviv & Space Birthday) 2001 (Boston & Okyo) and 2002 (Icon & La Locomotive) sets over the past 10-days I have my own opinion which I've aired (I've seen him live 3-4 times a year for the past decade, for me he hasn't been cutting it lately). Its great that people like his new direction - let hope he delivers for us all in 2007.
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
fair enough, i realize that he has taken a different direction from his earlier stuff, but not everyone is going to like the change, i mean who hasnt changed in the past 10 years or so. thats the thing about house music i guess, its always evolving and im sure at some point i wont like the direction he will take, so not a stab at you by any means...
personally i dont care for sasha pre 2001, nor do i understand what is the big deal about digweed on this board, i mean i missed my chance to really catch him by himself last week in miami, but the two times that i have seen him he was with sasha and both times(wmc07,nye07) digweed bored me almost to tears wishing sasha would come back and bring the party to life, but i wont go as far as to say he sucks ( I'll give him one more shot before i do that, lol)
Re: Sasha & Digweed play to empty tent (almost)
I'd always rated Sasha ahead of Digweed for the way he can destroy a room (and Diggers has, at times, had a reputation for "plodding") ... but to these ears there's been a turnaround, with Diggers live sets over the past 2-years being far far better and more inspiring than Sasha's. The Space and Mumbai sets from 2006 are far far better than the Zouk and Zoo House clicking-drum minimalism. Just my opinion and its great that we have different tastes ... it makes the chat more lively.
