Re: don't you just love gambling...

I read a good article about them in the Times. Apparetnly they are skating the boundries of the law pretty closely. That's the interesting thing about the internet, it is international and therefore very tough to legislate.
Apparetnly they are skating the boundries of the law pretty closely.
in what way?

Re: don't you just love gambling...

what other way do these ppl go down...........TAX EVASION

they cannot fairly apply each states sales taxes and they are mostly off shore so they dont pay it to the US. basically you could play wi-fi on a flight from LA to toronto and you would literally earn money in 30 states and 3 canadian provinces. big brother wants a share of that, but they cannot track the money.

but they aren't selling products... the state doesn't tax you at a normal casino if you win $200, so what's the difference if you win it online or in-house?

#451472Post 6 of 18

Re: don't you just love gambling...

the states tax the casino's. here, the US does not have jurisdiction over a computer in a foreign country.

and you do get taxed on your gambling winnings. its called a W2-G form. you can even offset your losses against your winnings. but you cannot take a loss. you can lower your income. so basically if you spend 400 on lotto this year, and your last ticket wins you 425, you have a gain of 25.

Re: don't you just love gambling...

They are offshore. Keep in mind that in the US you can only gamble legally in a few specific places (Nevada, Atlantic City, Indian res, etc) but now anybody anywhere can get some action. Servers are out of the country so technically they aren't breaking the US law, but meanwhile little Billy in Iowa is blowing his college saving on poker.

Re: don't you just love gambling...

i try to stay away from gambling. i have personally seen it ruin a few lives. i just think there is something so wrong about giving your money away, but that might be the jew in me. while not a physical addiction like heron or coke, its really bad and can land you in big trouble with the wrong ppl.

do yourselves a favor and put the money into the market. vanguards S&P 500 fund is solid. 8) at least you have some control there.

Re: don't you just love gambling...

Gambling is the same is any vice...great when done in moderation. I personally see nothing wrong with seeing what you can do with $10. Especially if you can get two days entertainment out of it.

Re: don't you just love gambling...

exactly. not only it can be profitable(don't think for a second that i'm talking about the house games), it's a hell of a fun ride! as a matter of fact, i had to be in Philly today, so instead of heading back i decided to take the expressway and hit up some casinos in AC. of course you wouldn't last 5 minutes with 10 bucks there, but the stakes are hgher as well. got me $60 worth of Bally's chips and turned that into 180 within an hour. met some people, won some dough. i'm loving it! and besides, poker is not about luck, as most people assume... i'm gonna catch up on some literature and hopefully be able to take other people's money easier...

That's gambling too. You watch your money go up and down, just like any other venture. But the bond market is a bit more comfortable than the stock market, BUT you can make more money int he stock market also...but it's a bigger risk.

Re: don't you just love gambling...

The difference between gambling vs. investing is in gambling you either win/lose. With investing, you can always approach it with a long term view...thus, you can hold.

The bond market is not necessarily as 'comfortable' as the stock market. It can be just as volatile (or even more). It depends on the quality of instruments you are investing in. Look at Michael Milken and the fortune he made in junk bonds.

in las vegas you only get taxed if your winnings exceed 1000 dollars at once ...you can win 500 dollars at a time on different machines and not get taxed.. i dont gamble, you cant when you live in vegas

Re: don't you just love gambling...

What is it like to live in a city like that, with so much gambling going on 24 hours a day? That must be pretty nuts.

I hope you live a ways away from the strip.

#451987Post 15 of 18

Re: don't you just love gambling...

i live about 2-3 miles from the strip.. i only go to the strip when friends or relatives visit. traffic sucks and it's a waste of money so i stay away as much as possible. otherwise the city is like any other one really.

Re: don't you just love gambling...

I love gambling also (blackjack is my game), but you have to take it in moderation or it can get out of hand quickly. My rule is that I only gamble a set limit of money that I can afford to lose. Once I lose it all I call it a day and hope I have better luck next time. If I happen to double up what I have set aside, I usually consider myself lucky and stop playing also before I lose all that money.
