Re: Fear the end is near...
I don't think we're insisting Kamal keep this alive against his wishes, but rather what we can do to keep this alive.

If we can take over the cost with minimal hassle and admin/babysitting responsibilities for Kamal, why not?

And if the current form of [ms] ceases to exist, but we can continue [ms] on a different server thereby completely taking it off Kamal's hands, why not?

Like sbando said, a forum is just software with pages and words; sets are linked out to file sharing sites. We're not talking gigabytes here.

We'll miss a lot of the great custom functions but I feel like they're taken for granted anyway, not sure if they're actively used.

I just did a quick google/research on forum software, Flarum is in beta, looks like a pretty cool, very lightweight, and modern forum software that's open source / free.

NodeBB is another modern forum software and they provide hosting at a cost (I think).

If we know the server requirements we can quickly look into hosting options or I'm sure some of you are already familiar with them.
MJ more or less nailed it on the head, were not exactly getting any younger and our priorities are changing which means we are getting into different things and have less disposable income ( some of us ).. i've watched what has happened to many a forum over the last say 10 years and it's been a worrying trend, one forum i goto used to be so busy that by the time your reply was logged and you went to the main page you had to scroll down the page to see the thread you had just replied in, it's just not the case any more..sorry to say this but the forum is a relic of days gone by. this place need a major overhaul, it's not been right since it was hacked..it doesn't even have SSL or nothing, i'm pretty sure we could all sort that out right now because we have a little bit of inspiration to deal with it but as time goes on more and more of the regulars are just going to slowly drop off and yet again it's just going to be left to one guy

Re: Fear the end is near...

The point is to save the ms community, we all know the site has lost its purpose years ago, no one thinks it's the history that needs to be saved. I'll be even more direct: MS doesn't exist anymore. But the people who still post here don't need the history, just a few forum pages on a cheaper server solution.

That said, I think Kamal has already made his mind. Too bad. You can find me at HearThis.

Re: Fear the end is near...

GitHub - discourse/discourse: A platform for community discussion. Free, open, simple. is an alternative and looks like it would cost $20/mo on digital ocean, i can set it up, but i can't be bothered about importing whatever db we're using to postgres, so it would be a fresh start

Re: Fear the end is near...

What kind of hosting plan are we looking at to host something like [ms] the forum, disregarding sets?

Digital Ocean has node.js so running NodeBB is possible too.

Here are some discussions around the 3 forum software mentioned so far:

Discourse, Flarum, NodeBB... Oh My! : webdev Flarum vs Discourse vs Nodebb - Flarum Community What are the advantages of Flarum over Discourse? - Flarum Community

Who's the most familiar with the nuts and bolts of forum software and can make a call?

Re: Fear the end is near...

I will pay and host the forum if you guys can host the sets someplace. It would be a new start though, but I would be cool with that. If who ever owns the mercuryserver.com domain wants to give that up I would pay for that too.

#1771957Post 49 of 108

Re: Fear the end is near...

i'd vote for digital ocean or heroku because it's less work and easier to scale, but if there's no set hosting then the database probably isn't going to get that big. i do ruby and js which is why i suggested discourse, but i doubt i have time to do a whole lot of customization stuff for it. How to use the Discourse One-Click Application on DigitalOcean | DigitalOcean

what about just trimming down MS as is, dumping the forum db and moving to another host? any php people still here?

Re: Fear the end is near...

This is has been coming for a long time really. While not surprising, I am saddened to hear the news. I hope we maintain MS in some other guise. I have no idea about the technical side of things though.

When I initially read the thread, I remembered when my first kid was born and I posted the news here on MS. I don't think I ever felt so connected, as I did that night, to the gang here

I will be sure to continue the ambient thread over at the Juice ;)

I would be happy to contribute financially on a regular basis as well.

I actually like the idea of a smaller forum, it seems friendlier :) I don't know much technically , but if we take this framework , trim and put up the new links, could that work?? Basically work out what we want to keep .

I would like to see mercuryserver.com living :)

Re: Fear the end is near...

it's important we keep this place going, if we don't evil_concussion will have fewer places to tell people he spent over a grand on a piece of high end equipment to record 128 Kbps extended 30 minute long streams that only he knew about from his many insiders, SORRY WE CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN

on a serious note : i can chip in a few quid each month as well btw

Crazy how easy DigitalOcean makes it.

I was looking at that and in the DO forum someone mentioned DiscourseHosting.com. They seem reasonably priced. $20 for basic, $40 for professional, $80 for business.

Would that be reasonable? Presumably their infrastructure is built specifically for Discourse and we'd get support if anything goes wrong.

Re: Fear the end is near...

I have decided to call it quits after 20 years I will upload like crazy until Winter Music Conference 2017 after that I will fade away keeping only a few selected users on soulseek. If you have any requests now would be a good time.

Re: Fear the end is near...

^^^ Really sorry to hear this, but a huge thank you for all those years. !!!

Maybe we need to be looking at this in a slightly different way. One step at a time. With the first step to take some of the pressure off Kamal financially, that would give us and him a bit of breathing space.

I am ready to put my money where my mouth is :)

Re: Fear the end is near...

Mercuryserver was the Global Underground of the modern era. Through the 00's it was the place that you could come to and find many exclusive sets, that no one else had. People here had that genuine love of the music. The problem was in the +2010's, everything changed. Facebook, soundcloud etc, decimated that era and we can never go back. I would love to know how many times that I have clicked on this place. I've also had the privilege of meeting quite a few people from here too.

#1772015Post 61 of 108

Re: Fear the end is near...

^^^We can't go back, but we can take the best of what is here to create a good space, if smaller space. :) Somewhere we can still talk music no matter who we are :) Facebook doesn't do that , they just "like" , soundcloud certainly doesn't !!

For me it has always been about sharing music and we can still do that, even sharing with those hundreds of people who come here every day and say nothing. I don't care if they don't want to talk about it , we are still getting music out there :)

It shouldn't be all or nothing, it should probably just be different. :)

Re: Fear the end is near...

Very Sad news. I actually still find most if not all of my new music through MS. I hope some alternative can be worked out. Please keep me posted on were you guys all end up.

Re: Fear the end is near...

definitely sad to hear...this place is one of the last remaining EDM communities that put music first.. and amazing music at that..

let us know how we can help

Re: Fear the end is near...

I hope before its killed for good we figure out a place where we can all transfer to.

If there is a will there is a way :)

Re: Fear the end is near...

I have clients on here who are paying about $60/Month. If we can collectively pool in $100/Month, we should be able to get things rolling. Of course if donations are not your thing, you guys are welcome to sign up for webhosting and that will give you guys something back (i.e. a webhosting platform) for financially helping out.

#1772042Post 73 of 108

Re: Fear the end is near...

Yeah let us know what is the best option. We can try to host and reboot [ms] or keep this going with contributions.

#1772045Post 74 of 108

5 or 10 a month is acceptable.

Re: Fear the end is near...

I can do a reoccurring payment from my bank account. I would be surprised if any bank didn't do it. We just need to know where to send the payment. :)

#1772047Post 76 of 108

Re: Fear the end is near...

When using paypal it's important to send the money as a gift, to avoid taxes.

very happy to see fellow board members come together to find a solution... [ms] really is a special place, always has been. can't get rid of us that easy Kamal ;)

thank you for the recurring, will set one up myself as well.

not sure if i want to know this.. i already know it's at least 2-3x a day..

Re: Fear the end is near...

As a new member, and this is just an idea, but what if it was mandatory to pay $5/month, with your first 1-2 months free or something like that? Seems everyone who has been here for a while would be happy to help, after they realize the value.
