So... I recently befriended a 20 year old gal. I'm twice her age. We got to talking about music, DJs, etc. and I asked her for her favorites. Skrillex, Diplo, and Steve Aoki. You know where this is heading... ha ha.

No really, so I told her about Digweed and she did not know. So she got home and messaged me: "I listened to Digweed. I don't like it b/c it's the same beats over and over and it should have lyrics."

Without going all DJ-snob, this is an honest request for advice. What's the best way to introduce the current crop of EDMers into I guess what we now call as underground? Short of taking her to a Digweed live (which is not possible, we live in different countries), what would be a good way? Progressive house often does not reward with instant gratification and you have to be patient... very different from today's EDM. If she likes EDM, that's fine. But wouldn't it be so nice if she could experience the other side too? 8)

Re:

First of all, best of luck with long distance relationships. I just got out of one. Have fun! Anyway, music is subjective at best. Ask her about her favorite album & listen to it together. Then, put on your favorite (no matter the genre). Work your way up to the beats.

Just show her all the music you like most and tell her why you like it... If she does not like it for any reason, just deal with it  .. my 2 cents ;)

Make them hear some of the best tracks of that era:

Sasha - Xpander - YouTube Jondi Spesh - We Are Connected - Original Mix - YouTube Christian Smith John Selway - Move (Original Re-Mastered Version) - YouTube Adam Johnson - Traber [HD] - YouTube A.D.N.Y. Presents Leiva - Something for the Soul - YouTube Voyager - Time Travel - YouTube

If they don't like this, it's mission impossible.

So why is he trying to get her into it? It's like having your dad trying to get you into Deep Purple, mor any of that old hippie shit.

There have been studies done that say we hear differently depending on age. Particularly those under 25 . Does she love music ?, or is it just a soundtrack for her social life? I would suggest artists that cross over a bit. Artists that are not quite you but you can enjoy . One of those for me would be Hot since 82. He does vocals, but good vocals. :)

Good luck !!

djkix seems very clear to me when saying " If she likes EDM, that's fine. But wouldn't it be so nice if she could experience the other side too?" but if you want more details just ask him

btw nothing wrong with dads trying to get you into deep purple and stuff, better that than not try anything at all.. Surely i´ll be the kind of dad that will try to get my son into Hernan Cattaneo´s music .. Then, he will listen whatever he wants or that will be trendy in 2035

Re: New vs Old

I've never been with a girl that's into our music the way I am.

Present day, my fiancée hates my music!!

She says it sounds like the wind and the trees which I thought was pretty cool in itself

There is no such thing as the underground. It's just a phrase coined by people that would like to touch Digweed's cock.

Re: New vs Old

Never thought about it (and certainly no one is debating if underground music exists or not) but anyway thanks for the info :)

The by now legendary Zover used to say something similar about underground music  ;)

That might help! Tough call, you're nice enough to share what you like. I don't get new music, or new DJs... Best of luck.

Re: New vs Old

An All Day I Dream party with Lee seems to work best in my experience..

But all in all.. it kind has to happen organically.. if she has an ear for good music, she will outgrow the EDM on her own.

EDM, that's pretty much all house music.

Re: New vs Old

You cant change her mind, She has to discover this kind of music by her own, you can show a couple of djs, perhaps, she will take some tips or music from others djs. She cant go from the EDM to "our music" from one day to another, it could take month or years for her to find something interesting.

Actually there is one cd I always play for people as an introduction and that is Danny Howells Renaissance the Mix Collection , it's really accessible .

We have been here several times but he we go again...Not that old but it has incredible 12 years old now.. I was already pretty much in love with music back then (since raincry), but this was life changer.. still is my fav track ever.

Always a good listen!

Re: New vs Old

Good feedback and thanks! I think I might have to just let this one go. When I gave my suggestions, she'd come back with wanting me to listen to her favorite Skrillex tracks and I feigned to be opened minded and listened but I knew I'd never like them. Actually, she doesn't mind Digweed but it's just not her first choice when it comes to dance music. EDM is by default her number 1. So it goes both ways...
