i was lucky enough to go visit my cousin in Yangshuo, China for the past 8 days or so (with LARGE amounts of travel time included). He has been teaching english there for the past several months, and invited me out.

here are a few pics of how truly phenomenal this place is:

the view of the balcony of my cousin's place

what you see when you walk out the appt he is renting...a huge water lilly pond.

a view of the lake and bridge in the centre of town

the main touristy-type street, called 'west street', where you can buy alot of amazing things for next to nothing

a part of the town from a hike we took to moon hill

the reason they call it moon hill...a half moon has been erroded into a huge limestone mountain. me on the right, my cousin on the left

bamboo rafting on the Li river...basically drinking lots of beer in the sun. this guy was great though, even let us try our hand at guiding the raft ourselves...

shot infront of a temple just off the highway near the city

i'll post more pics and add some more commentary about the trip tommorow, if anyone is interested.

a few more...

making a sidewalk the old fashioned way.

we rented mini-bikes that ran on electricity and had a range of about 40 km. loved them so much we rented them 3 days straight. i gotta say, the first time driving a bike through the INSANE chinese traffic was pretty nerve wracking.

another scenic shot from atop moon hill. it was definitely worth the scorching hot, bug infested, jungle climb we had to make to get up it. i've never sweat so much in my life.

Re: my trip to rural mainland china

Great pictures mate, why didn't you stay longer?

#444375Post 13 of 47

Re: my trip to rural mainland china

thats the way to do it, never go to the tourist areas when you go on vacation, go and immerse yourself in the culture and people. when i first went to puerto rico, i stayed with a friend from their and not once did i go to a tourist area outside of gambling, i spent the 2 weeks just chilling with the people, hitting up the jungle and outlying islands etc.

the only way to go.

I didn't know such places existed... I don't think I could be any happier if I could wake up to that every morning

day/night, do you have a high-quality version of that pic? wallpaper worthy

#444395Post 15 of 47
wallpaper worthy
Quite.

That really looks like an awesome trip you took there. I agree that taking a vacation to the cultural areas beats the hell out of the tourist areas any day because the people are genuine, and they aren't just toadies trying to take your money.

:RightOn: for rural China.

well, starting off...just getting to this place was a bit of an adventure. flew from vancouver to hong kong (which i've been to a few times) and spent one night there. cross over the boarder to shenzhen, which is the nearest chinese city, about a 45 minute train ride away. got my visa same day service before going through customs (you MUST have a visa to travel into china), and then headed through customs. got a cab to the shenzhen airport, which was nearly an hour away from the boarder crossing, and tried to find a flight to Guelin, the nearest major city to where i was staying. this turned out to be a bit of a problem, as there was a shitload of rain that day so the flight i wanted to take was delayed till 7:45pm....i got to hang out in the airport for 9 hours. finally get on the plane (which they allowed smoking on!!) flew for an hour to Guelin. cousin was waiting for me there and we hopped onto a DODGY bus filled with pickpockets and headed to yangshuo a couple hours away.

Yangshuo itself isnt that big. you could drive across it in about 15-20 minutes. i think they have about 40,000 permament residence. they do have lots of tourists, but a large portion of them are chinese (since chinese are not allowed to leave their own country, they have to vacation at places like Yangshuo). there is a mass influx of them on the weekends when they come via a boat on the river. there were also a few americans and brits, and lots of aussies. also ran into some scandanavians and a group from columbia. many western tourists just roam around all of china.

anyways...about the locals. generally great people, very warm and friendly, always saying hello to us. in china, the merchants are pretty agressive sellers; ie. if you even look in their shop as you pass by, they will often say something to try and get you to come in and buy. some people kinda find it annoying at first, but once you get used to ignoring them if you arent interested in buying, its not a problem.

we partied it up there quite a bit, lots of great little bars and pubs. the locals and tourists all pretty much end up at the same spots, though there are some bars that cater more to tourists. beer is extremely cheap there....a 700ml bottle of beer (more than a pint) is between 4-7 rmb, which is about a dollar canadian. some of its not the highest quality stuff, but tsing tao beer kicks ass.

during the day we'd pretty much recover from the night before until about noon. my cousin would have to teach for 2 hours every day from 2-4pm, so i'd head out and go shopping or meet up with some other people we had met and have lunch (all the food i tried there was great). we went on several great hikes, bamboo rafting, touring around on those mini bikes into some pretty crazy places (ie. on the paths into the middle of rice fields or out into really remote villages). never really ran out of stuff to do.

here is a pic of a group of some of the english teachers, made up of brits, aussies, americans and canadians. this was probably the most amazing view i've ever had while eating a meal....we were on the top of the highest restaraunt in town. it was straight out of a movie.

as far as things that shocked me:

what they'll eat there....you a body part from an animal, it was likely on the menu. every menu i saw at a chinese restaraunt had things like cat, dog, cow stomach, pig uterus, ect ect. some soups would come with a few chicken hearts, there was even one with rooster dick in it. needless to say, i passed on the freaky shit. ohh, and chicken feet, i didnt meet a single chinese person who didnt love chicken feet.

little kids there dont wear diapers. parents will make a hissing sound to try and get them to piss/shit....which they will then do by simply squating on the street. first time i saw that i threw up a little in my mouth.

general levels of sanitation arent exactly what we're used to...toilets are a porcelain hole in the ground, and while they do have plumbing, you cant flush toilet paper down because it will jam things up....so you have to put it into a basket next to the shitter. i was so happy to see a porcelian pony when i got home.

other than some of the things that grossed me out a bit, the place was fantastic, and i really would recommend going if you are anywhere near that area. there were so many amazing things to do...i really wish i'd taken a few tours, especially the cormorant fishing tour, where you get to watch huge cormorants go fishing at night and then bring the fish back to their owner. maybe next time...cause i am going back again for sure.

Re: my trip to rural mainland china

awsome pictures, as a 1st generation american (mom from hong kong and father from china/hk) i have been lucky to have seen many parts of china. Ive been to that area but when i was too young to remember...

right now im in oita, japan visiting a friend whos been studying abroad here for almost a year now. although not rural, its is far from the intence city like to say tokyo. although much different then china, i still have that expited being in asia feeling that i ways get goign to china or hong kong. i would put up pics but im using my good old 35mm and all the pics my buddy has are of us being obnoxiously drunk.

as for the chines food that you mentioned, people say that chinese people eat everything that has 4 legs except the table, everything that flyes except a plane, and everything that swims execpt a boat... i think over all thats pretty much true.

i've seen that on tv. they put a string around the neck of the bird so it can't swallow. once it has gotten enough fish, they get it back into the boat using a stick, open the mounth and take the fish out, all while travelling down the river at night. it amasing to watch.

Nice story mate...wish I had my diary from Africa digitalized but I don't. Keep one everytime you make a trip far away, and when you read it back after one or two years you'll laugh your ass off over things that amazed you at the time you wrote them down.

Hope to take a decent cam with me to Ghana this december ;-)

yes I agree with you Jeff, Chinese culture has a belief that anything that walks the earth with it's back to the sun is edible....

I had a very close friend from China who was a grad assistant with me in the MBA program, she said her Grandmother and her Gradmom's neighbour (who were best friends) had a delicacy they shared but it was a bit rare..... BABY MICE.... I mean not the little ones.... newlyborn less then 12 hours old.... without the hair and soft bones....

her description was far more grotesque than what I have posted and I couldn't fucking eat for a week. Everytime I bit into something, I thought of what she said and I just let it pass.... horrid.... but oh well, it's a way of life for some....

Reminds me of eating soft-shell crab in Baltimore. But way more extreme!

My friends have just got back from adopting a little girl in a similar area of China. I haven't seen their pictures yet, but I am looking forward to an excellent slideshow. He bought a new Digital Rebel XT for the trip.

They are tasty, the but the "soft" shell isn't as soft as the name implies. And you're eating the whole creature. I felt like I was crunching through unshelled shrimp. Still, it's not like a lobster shell.

LOL

Try eating snail kebab in Ghana...I tried, but had to give up. The Okro-soup (slime-soup) was very edible tho, and fun to play with too: dragging snotty lines from 50 cm long by dipping my fingers in and then lifting my hand up above the bowl :D

Dude, you have no idea how utterly and completely envious I am. I want to travel so bad, but life just doesn't permit it right now. I sit and think about all the remote places in this world and the about how absolutely breathtaking vistas like the pictures you posted are out there, just waiting to be enjoyed. You have totally solidified my resolve to travel and see as much as I can of this world. Glad you had a kick ass time.
