Single Malt Scotch anyone?

Anyone out there single malt fans?

Was wondering what you think of "Lagavulin"?

I personally like Laophraoig http://www.laphroaig.com/, and the Balvenie double-wood (Cherry and French Oak cask finishing).

Another I came across in London was by a place called Signatory. I don't really know how to term them, but as it was explained to me, they go to various distilleries and selectively choose several casks that are typically used for blending. Then they take those singles and finish them and they are filtered unchilled. The color of the result is almost a clear scotch, a very pale yellow.

It is so smooth and rich in flavor. Whatever they do to finish it is phenomenal.

So I've had the Signatory Laophraoig 15 year, and another from the same Islay, a very peaty one. If you've had Laophraoig, you can tell I like the peaty, rich earthy flavours.

Is the "Lagavulin" much like that? Even if it is not, I like the richness of a nice single malt overall.

Anyone have any good preferences?

The place in London I found the Signatory was in Soho on Old Compton St. called The Vintage House, http://freespace.virgin.net/vintagehouse.co/. Definitely check them out if you like Scotch and are in London.

Re: Single Malt Scotch anyone?

For some reason, if it's not clear, I can't drink it. I think I had blood/alcohol poisoning when I was in Korea...way too much Jack & Coke.

I was literally hung-over for 3 days...worst ever.

My fiance's dad was on the board of directors of a company from Scotland that is a Scotch producer. For his retirement from the board they gave him this top-quality shit in a beautiful crystal set. I'll have to get the name of it but it's $1500 a bottle whatever it is. After I accidentally knocked my first glass over and spilled it all over the dining room table, he poured another. Wow, what a smooooooooth Scotch. I'll get the name and pass it on.

Re: Single Malt Scotch anyone?

I am not a scotch snob, but I really really like it. I only know about what my dad has given me in the past (common theme). When I buy a bottle is usually Glenlivet 12. My friend swears by Oban.

For more information, perhaps you could refer to...

Re: Single Malt Scotch anyone?

Islay scotch is great. I'm really into The Macallan 12yr right now. So many smooth and flavorful notes with a clean vanilla aftertaste.

You don't want to know! I had already done my part in finishing off 3 bottles of wine so the Scotch was the last thing I needed, but he insisted. :D

hOLY SMACKERS THAT WAS FUNNY!

Man, I can't stop laffin' anymore....best pickle on the board as of yet. Way to go Orlandoooo!!

About the Whiskey: Balvenie Doublewood is still my fave, good runner-ups are at this moment: Dalmore (12 yr) and Talisker (10yr). Dalmore is woody, with a first taste of honey, and Talisker a bit smokey. Laphroaig wasn;t really to my liking, not bad, but not one i'd buy for me.
