im just now listening to this and enjoying it as well!
i own probably every UNKLE release so this is right up my alley :)
Re: GU41 Naples
hmm, maybe i will check it out then
Re: GU41 Naples
It's more of a concert performance than it is a DJ mix I find. There was a review I read posted on Global Underground's facebook page that summed it up as being GU evolving - going beyond just recreating a straightforward DJ mix and trying to bring something more to the table.
I really like it, very enjoyable home listening with a proper set of headphones.
Re: GU41 Naples
Not bad, Sounds like a rock band mixed with electronic music, Good tracks, good re-versions, some confusing moments but in general a good comp. I like it.

agreed.. one track in particular with the female singing vocals early on Disc 2 had me shut it off last night. skipped over it and giving the rest of Disc 2 a reboot now... great so far.
compilation reminds me of his 'Living in my Headphones' mix he did a couple years ago.
Re: GU41 Naples
if its anything like Living in my Headphones mix, i will be pleased.
Re: GU41 Naples
Ok....so i am probably going to get shit for this, but.....
I REALLY like this mix, the second disc begins so well. I need to go over the 1st one again but so far I love it. its different, but thats why i like it. Lavelle may or may not be a great live dj, I dont know because ive not heard many of his live sets and never saw him live. Regardless of his live skills, he fuckin ROCKS it in the studio. When he "produces" a mix album in the studio hes magical. Does remind me of Living in my Headphones mix, which was damn good. So...I guess i really am a Lavelle fan, his other GUs werent great but other things i have heard from him are quite good
Please dont misunderstand this statement, because Sasha is far above Lavelle but this almost reminded me of a Sasha studio album, guess Charlie May's influence rubbed off a little.

Re: GU41 Naples
Loved this. Disc one is the better of the two discs.
Re: GU41 Naples
I have to say, I genuinely enjoy the fuck out of this comp. Its been my fav cd the week or two.
Re: GU41 Naples
Just finishing CD 1 now and all I can say is that I really love this. I've always liked UNKLE but this mix is excellent, would strongly recommend it to all. If CD 2 is also as good we might have the compilation of the year on our hands.
Re: GU41 Naples
I agree, this is one of the best mixes ive heard in years. Im very impressed. It is an addictive set. Lavelle wins for sure
Re: GU41 Naples
Last I listened to Lavelle was probably 11 years ago... I just remember him doing lots of breakbeat and lots of builds and drops (pre-EDM dra drops lol). That's all... bleh.
Edit: Ok, listened to both CDs... didn't do it for me. Too spacey, not dance-tracks... I know it's that experimental rock stuff DJs like to play at the end of their sets (Diggers does this too) but the whole album is like Sasha's mixmag set. Wanted dance choons... not to be found here.
Re: GU41 Naples
just bought it.... pretty decent imo
Re: GU41 Naples
I still enjoy this one, a lot. finally GU made a decent job with lavelle after the last comps, very bad some of them, by the way, Gu seems to recover some of creidibility, by now.
Re: GU41 Naples
Listened to it again today, i also still really like it. Its a keeper for sure. Good addition to GU and hopefully a sign that theyre back in full force
Re: GU41 Naples
Excellent work. Gonna address some things I saw in the comments:
GU had been sold to Ministry of Sound and I think that's when some of those odd releases came out... GU 040 with Solomun was the official relaunch of the label under the original ownership. I never did find out if it was both of the "fat lads" or just one.
In regards to people talking about the mix cd being over...yeah that's true but GU was always about a lot more than mix cd's. It was about a lifestyle...it was about information. It was an exclusive package with photography and extended liner notes. It was dedicated to giving the purchaser access to what a city was like and what dance music culture surrounding the event was all about. I don't think that that kind of packaging is over. Sure, the CD's or the mixes can be downloaded on iTunes and in the case of GU 041, there was a digital booklet included. I think the people who buy these albums want a peace of history. I bought the super deluxe edition of this because it's something tactile and I want to have it forever. I actually bought the album on i-tunes as well just to have the individual tracks, unmixed.
I found the album to be excellent. Some people referred to it more as a studio album.....I'd say that's accurate...it does remind me of Sasha's involver but I think this is much, much better (thought I must say Invol<3r is the best and that too is masterfully crafted). I've listened to it regularly since I got it a couple months ago or whenever it came out. It's beautiful...it's timeless....it's making me excited for what they do next.
Re: GU41 Naples
Some of them odd releases where better than the usual DJ's. Only one Fat lad came back, Andy.
The mix cd market is fucked. There will never be the same excitement over a mix cd release ever like there was in the 90's
Re: GU41 Naples
yeap, I don't own anything that can play a cd anymore. I think the only mixes I've bought in the last 5 years have been the odd balance, the digweed live stuff, and a random fabric mix here and there.
Re: GU41 Naples
Sasha's Ibiza was the one that sticks out in my mind. The party was the beginning of June and Cd release was September. Months of waiting, all the promotion, not knowing most of the tracks. Then getting up on the release day and purchasing it, then listening to time and time again at home, in the car, at afterparties. By the end you would know the tracks and the transitions inside out. Most releases these days would be lucky to be played into double figures.
Re: GU41 Naples
This is one that ive already played into the double figures. I think GU just has that staying power with their releases. Not all of course, but i go back to most of the GU and Nubreed series on a regular basis. Same is true for Digweed's live series and structures albums. There are others, but in the modern day, Balance is the only regular series other then Digweed coming out with something fairly often:) So if GU can put out quality mixes, even and especially "concept albums", then I welcome their return and look forward to the next one

Considering how the landscape of music marketing has changed, with the phasing out of physical media, the ubiquity of music sets being available for download, the rise of online music purchasing like iTunes and how piracy pretty much overran the labels, I think lamenting that it'll never be the same is kind of moot. Times have changed, but saying that it'll never be the same, well, that comes with the change.
Look, I miss going to the record store and spending time checking out the releases and enjoying picking up the newest release on the day it came out, but would I trade that for having what we have now? No way.
Re: GU41 Naples
its funny, no one cared for lavelle the longest time (some people enjoyed GU023, but that was all)... and now? it seems he brings GU back to life, at least from the response this album is getting on MS.
i still enjoy buying mix cds, the "classic" ones like balance as well as the "live" ones, like digweed does (or huntemann)
Re: GU41 Naples
Even his most ardent of defenders (including myself) have a hard time justifying his GU037 Bangkok mix - it's a fucking mess and all over the place.
Guy's fantastically talented - I particularly liked his soundtrack based efforts and some of his more eclectic stuff. Even his Mo Wax retrospect is pretty good (though likely not appreciated by a more prog house/trance crowd).
Re: GU41 Naples
i think the whole breakbeat phase was quite horrible to be honest... and when Lavelle tried spinning it... i think i would rather taste my own throw up.
i agree with you Highsteppa, Lavelle as UNKLE/Mo'Wax is very exceptional, i still go back to my Mo'Wax cd's.. especially Ape vs. Mo'Wax. the only audio CD's i buy anymore are UNKLE and Digweed's Live In series. i have listened to Naples in the double figures as well, especially the first disc.
Re: GU41 Naples
hmmm, perhaps I should give it a listen then...
Re: GU41 Naples
wonder how they will keep their business running with compilations like this....
