Great article, of similarity of what's slowly happening in Sydney, but I would not call these clubs great/pioneering.

Re: Clubs We Wish Still Existed

I saw this on fb, I think it's a very regional thing. Being from the midlands I would say Venus is a glaring omission. Back 2 Basics is the king of clubs, but still exists, happily.

I imagine there are folk from Yorkshire bemoaning the fact The Orbit isn't on there, for example, and they'd have a point. Did many people in the north care when Shoom closed? Not really. DId many in London care when Hacienda closed, not really.

I think people were loyal to clubs back then, moreso than being loyal to djs. Days when the club was bigger than the dj, how it should be.

Re: Clubs We Wish Still Existed

Most of them clubs had run their course, you just have to look at the demise of Cream, it was all over by 2002.

Clubs not mentioned, Venue 44 (Mansfield), The End (London), Media (Nottingham), Turnmills, Venus, The Cross, The Sanctuary (Milton Keynes and Birmingham) The Que Club. The Manor (Ringwood), Club UK, The Void (Stoke)

Re: Clubs We Wish Still Existed

Space in Ibiza could soon be on that list, as there is a lot of speculation that this is its last year.

Re: Clubs We Wish Still Existed

Maybe they think that Twilo was not so important like others clubs that started a real scene in the beginning, like hacienda or shoom, or whatever, anyway. a moot poll like most of them.

Re: Clubs We Wish Still Existed

I know this was about the UK but back in those days we had AAHZ (Orlando). With that being said I don't think I would still want it to exist outside of the reunions anymore. It's a different time and place in music and people were a little more open and as time went on it became more about the DJ whereas back then it was more about the music. Although having the AAHZ reunions at The Beacham is a bonus since it's still around. I could also say Brassy's but that was really a bar and then late 92 we had MARZ in Cocoa. We also had The Edge in Orlando and Firestone.

Good list that. I went to most of them on that list, played at four of them (The End, Media, Turnmills and The Cross) and was a resident at one of them (The Cross). Happy days for sure. I think of the list I'd pick Club UK and The Cross as my favourites. The Cross and The End were instrumental in pioneering the London tech-house and progressive scene; Club UK was just insane!

I'd also add The Conservatory in Derby (which is where Renaissance was before it moved to The Cross). Derby is my home town, and I remember vividly thinking 'why are so many people coming from around the country to a local club in my town'. It sunk in pretty quickly. Must have been around 1993-94.

Re: Clubs We Wish Still Existed

Icon i could care less if it still existed - but it was our special shitty local club where I heard Sasha for the first time. And it did have a cool ambiance before it changed owners multiple times.
